Book Reccommendation

Hi Everyone,

I find the history of the Afican theatre absolutely fascinating, but there is a lack of good reading material out there. I have a book called "Desert Generals", which is great, but I'd like a book that covers both sides of the conflict, and in a more general fashion, sort of an overview of the war from O'Connors campaign in 1940 to the end in Tunisia in 43.

Any suggested reading?

Crom.

Currently reading 'Tobruk' by Frank Harrison, it is very informative and a great read. The author, being a veteran of the siege, also includes some personal anecdotes of the siege along with the account of the actual battle. I find this makes for very gripping and at times amusing reading.

edit - Also Alan Moorehead's 'African Trilogy' is also a good read on the subject.

Tobruk - by: Michael Carver (Covers all the battles from 41 to after the capture of Tobruk, from both Allied and German perspectives) Great read. Seems to be out of print, libraries usually have it.

Panzer Battles - By: F.W. Von Mellinthin

Panzer Commander - Memoirs of Colonel Hans von Luck

Brazen Chariots - By: Robert Crisp

Panzer Leader - by: Heinz Guderain

to name a few.

Von Mellenthin is good for the activities of Rommel's staff, on which he served, but his book can't be said to provide the view of both sides that the original poster asked for. The same could be said to apply to Moorehead, who as a war correspondent, mostly saw the war from the allied side. Both are very good in their own terms.
