flamingknives
I'm currently reading Peter Beale's "Tank Tracks" covering the war experience of 9 Bn RTR. In a section covering the events around Roosendaal, on the 29th October, the effect of an armour piercing shot on a Mk VII Churchill is described: (snipped for brevity) "...it was discovered that an AP shot had penetrated 7.5" into the turret..." "At the point of impact the thickness of the turret armour was 9 inches..." I hadn't spotted Churchills in game carrying this much armour - is the in game value the effective resistance of mulitple plates?
Kingfish
Could it be the mantlet + turret armor? Just a wild guess. I know the Mark VII and VIIIs list their turret fronts at 152mm (almost 6 inches).
flamingknives
Hmm. The same paragraph also notes that a Mk IV has 6" of armour at that point.
MikeyD
Perhaps (its just a guess) the shell hit low around the 'collar' at the turret base of a late mkVII?
aka_tom_w
did the projectile strike the turret plate on an angle? -tom w Originally posted by flamingknives: I'm currently reading Peter Beale's "Tank Tracks" covering the war experience of 9 Bn RTR. flamingknives
The description indicates a close to dead on hit - the Mk VII was facing the gun that hit it, and the description of the damage sounds like a square hit. The resulting hole is described as being "...just as though it had been drilled with a giant drill"
