Andreas
This is the official museum of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, dealing with the service of the regiment in Bella Italia. Amongst other things, it fought at Ortona. Of course, Michael will tell us that the Calgary Highlanders would have done much better there, but then again, Edmonton has the bigger mall... The site has extracts from the war diary, pictures and a letter written to a widow by a company commander. A model website, by the looks of it. Ex Bellator
Very nice site. Your browsing for no particular reason is certainly adding to my favourites list. Cheers.
Michael Dorosh
Actually, since the Edmontons had practiced mouseholing in England while the 2nd Division (whom the Calgary Highlanders belonged to) were rebuilding after the pounding they took at Dieppe...I think all concerned were glad (and lucky) to leave the Edmontons to it. Ortona never really fell until the Germans wisely decided to withdraw. Had they stayed til the bitter end ala Stalingrad, it may have been a lot worse. Of course, wasn't Vokes crazy to try and take it at all in the first place?
Michael Dorosh
Oh, for all the Aussies gritting their teeth at the "Loyal Edmonton Song" shown, set to the tune "Waltzing Matilda", there is another verse not mentioned. Jim Stone was the CO, and when word got out about needing volunteers for the Canadian Army Pacific Force after the conclusion of hostilities, the Loyal Eddies set another verse announcing their intentions about the CAPF, something like "You'll go alone, Stone You'll go alone, Stone You'll go a-marching to Burma alone..."
