**MikeyD Panther D (late), Yellow, this time!**

Chugging along on my Panther mods

- Panther Ausf.D (late), CMAK and CMBB, plain yellow.

At the CMBB side of our favorite site:

www.cmmods.com

This tank is labeled a late Panther D but the polygon's really an initial production A. Can't blame BFC, I think I know which (slightly outdated) reference book they got this 'late D' info from. In September '43 As and Ds were actually being built side-by-side on the assembly line, using identical chassis'!

So here's a plain yellow 'late D' mod that's lacking a Zimmerit coating. Alternate markings, skirts, and a choice of open or closed driver's visor. The camou version of this mod is progressing nicely.

Beautiful work on that Ausf. D Mikey! I already have it installed on both CMBB as well as CMAK. smile.gif

The little holes were pistol ports. There was also a hole around half the size of the hole in the rear of the turret, on the left side of the turret for shell ejection. But I am guessing Mikey did not model that because it would show up on both sides perhaps?

FYI, they are also for heavy cigarette smoking crews as Hetzer suggested! ;)

Tschüß!

The little holes are self defense pistol ports. They weren't deleted from the Panther design until the roof mortar showed up.

The bigger hole on the left side of the D turret was for passing messsages only. Turret arrangement made shell ejection, loading, or mg useage impossible. :D And the late D turrets had deleted that opening because it was practically uesless.

BUT, this ain't a D turret! The later cupola marks it as a Panther A. No way around it (unless you stick to older reference books). The game's early D - the only REAL D model in the game - has art for left and right side turrets, so a 'proper' D model is in the works.

"I had always read it as a shell ejection port."

Credit Tom Jentz and his relatively new Panther book ("Quest for Combat Supremacy") for that recent revelation. I had literally only discovered his line about that last night myself! Jentz's opinion of the often repeated 'ejection port' theory was that... well... it LOOKED like an ejection port! He also came down hard on earlier claims of Panther Ds with later cupola. The bulk of my hobby books date back to when i started out in the 70s. Unfortunately, its becoming increasingly clear that a lot of what was printed in the 70s was 2nd-hand guesswork :(
