Ammunition level for MG34 and MG42

all true but that's not answering the question. Why do the same size crews carry less for the gun with the higher ROF? Logic says faster firing = more bullets required (or at least as many as before)

The question WAS answered. The men are carrying all the ammo that they can regardless of MG. If one MG has a higher rate of fire, it will run out of ammo more quickly. Hence, the lower ammo rating.

The 42 has a higher firepower rating than the 34, which partially offsets this. I have also noticed (perhaps not scientifically) that the 34 is easier to spot than the 42.

The ingame ammo amount translates not into bullets, but into bursts or something like that. So if the MG42 has got a higher ROF=higher Firepower per burst it will fire more bullets each burst, using up the ammo in less bursts.

There are some guys here who know the exact numbers, they'll spell out all the specifics if neccessary.

Like tankibanki said. The ammo is highly abstracted. Rest assured the 6-man MG42 team has more than 85 bullets in their pockets (which, at 1200 rounds/min, would last less than 5 seconds). I think, but am not sure, that the rate of ammo decrease is the same regardless of weapon type, because it has been abstracted as bursts. Higher ROF = more bullets per burst, therefore fewer bursts. The same principle explains why Russian SMG squads have such low ammo.
