Xavier
I wonder why german biggest AFV (Panther, Tiger, KT...) didn't have Skirts around the turret  I also saw some pics of PzIII at Kursk with skirts. What were the russian shaped charge weapons at this time of the war? Thanx
Mr. Johnson--
Skirts were allocated to Panzer units to deal mainly with Russiamn 14.5 AT rifles. An added bonus was their ability to break up the hot stream from Zooks. I think when you got to the heavys, their turret armor was almost imprevious to zooks and 14.5 ATRs so it was not needed. MikeyD
The PzIII and PzIV turret sides could be pierced by Russian AT rifle shot, as could the Panther lower hull sides. These are the areas that got the skirts. The Panther turret side couldn't be penetrated by Russian AT rifle shot, it's as simple as that. I don't believe bazookas ever came into the conversation when skirts were being considered.
Panzer_Meyer
quote:
Originally posted by Mr. Johnson-<THC>-: What is wrong with some of you guys? This is a wargame. Its about killing. Its about destroying the enemy. This is not Chess, or Risk. It's a wargame. What do you think happens when a tank fires into a squad? Or a machine gun chatters on men caught in the open. If you don't want death, why play a wargame? What is the purpose. Go play Monopoly!

Love that sig Mr. Johnson! There currently seems to be an agreement, among those interested, that this was why the schürtzen where mounted. There are no doubt books being printed as we speak though, that still stick to the familiar "anti bazooka" version. M.
MikeyD
If not books being printed, there does seem to be a lot of misinformation being regurgitated by the History Channel! Remember, the jeep won the war.
Skipper
If Inspector General of german armored troops says that those skirts were against ATR in his memoirs, what other arguments do you need?

SGTHenry
I would concur with the above posts on the skirts. Especially about heavier tanks not having them. At least in most of the books I've read.
