Commissar
I have noticed that in some pictures of the IS-2, particularly pics of them in Berlin, they have this horizontal white stripe across the turret. Does anyone know what purpose it served? Was it for concealment or identification purposes??
Enoch
There was a thread a few weeks back that mentioned that the horizontal strip was used to help troops identify friendly tanks. Much like the black and white stripes the western allies put on aircraft wings for D-Day and beyond.
gunnergoz
As I recall it was primarily for recognition from the air...it's not nice to have a friendly sturmovik slicing and dicing your tank columns! If memory serves me correctly, it was combined with markings (white cross?) on the turret roof. Any body else have info on this? Michael Dorosh
I too have read the aerial recognition theory and do believe you gents are correct.
Mace
The purpose was to help air recoginition. An example can be found at Panzernet, which is in Spanish but an excellent site nevertheless. Mace
Kwazydog
Yup, and I beleive it was as much if not more to do with helping the western allies recognise them than thier own aircraft.
Mace
btw, Kwazy, you're going to do a JS2 skin like the one above? Or will you leave it for the modders? Mace
Commissar
Thanks, guys. It didn't make sense as camo. If you want to conceal yourself, painting yourself white in a non-winter scenario wouldn't be much help unless you were at some Aryan Nations rally. One more question, I have noticed that most pics of Soviet tanks, both ww2 and modern, do not have the red star insignia. Was this something done depending on crew desires or with permission of the unit commander? [ 04-16-2001: Message edited by: Commissar ]
