Lorak
Haha, yes we discussed this a little in the chat room last night. True the story has no base in reality... but, the effects do look nice. Hell it is a "WWII" movie. So no matter how hokey it is I know I'll be in line. Guest Ol' Blood & Guts
Well yes, it's a WWII movie. So was SPR. It does look cool. I saw the first preview during the Superbowl. Could be the next Das Boot, but that remains to be seen.

Major Tom
I saw this preview a couple months ago. I was going to vomit in terror. The main fact that got me, was, that it made the allies look so super intelligent to actually PLAN a mission to trick a 'stupid' German U-boat. FIRST, in order to know where this sub would be you would have had to already have cracked the code. What the?!?!? They are probably going to come up with some elaborate side story saying that the French Resistance managed to discover where this sub was to rendevous with a Milk Cow (seeing that the resistance had SO much access to the German sub pens!) It spits on the actual historical event. A US Escort Destroyer managed to attain the Sub in it's entirety through a long and tiring battle with the Sub. It is presently located in Chicago (I actually saw the sucker in 1996!). Just another Hollywood bastardization of history.
Colin
What a nice idea for a film. In 1941, HMS Bulldog (from the British Navy) salvaged a German Enigma machine from a stranded German U-boat, and consequently altered the course of the war, thanks to the decoding activities from Station X based in the heart of the English countryside. Needless to say, historical fact is being ignored somewhat for US heroism. Nothing wrong with that of course if it makes an entertaining film, but if it is successful a hell of a lot of people are going to take it at face value - which would be a big mistake. (America weren't even involved in the war in 1941) Watch the excellent Channel 4 documentary "Station X" instead, or wait for the film of Robert Harris' novel "Enigma". ------------------ Visit my webpage! http://cm4mac.tripod.com
Guest Zulu1
Submarines.... zzzzzzzzzzzz LOL, each to his own. I like sub sims, and there's a new version of Silent Hunter on the horizon. It is supposed to be able to link up with Destroyer Commander (due out in fall) so you can play either side over the Internet. As far as Silent Hunter goes, IMHO, its a good game. At full realism, it gets pretty tense when you are getting pounded by 3 Japanese tincans. Good strategy element too in trying to penetrate the escort screen and get into firing position. Major Tom
Actually, there was a submarine, U-505 which was a German sub boarded by US Sailors, from an Escort Destroyer. It was completely slavaged, along with all equipment inside. It provided a good testbed to see exactly what a German sub of the time is capable of. As I stated earlier, it is mounted out of water @ the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. This is what the movie is probably ripping off. It would make just as interesting a movie to actually have the ship to sub battle, then the boarding of US Sailors with guns and cutlasses. The trek with the thing back to a firendly port was a movie in itself!
killmore
By the way first ENIGMA decodes were done in 1939 by Polish inteligence. They managed to obtain "misplaced" enigma machine. When germany attacked they took all of the experts and equipment and ended up in UK.
