killmore
How many Soviet leaders were Russian? I am wondering... Lenin was not russian but some germam/jewish/mongolian?. Stalin was Georgian. Khrustiev was ukrainian. Brezniev? - No idea Gorbachev was Russian. Is this true? If it is sounds like Soviet union was not ruled by russians. Remainds me of late roman empire. (This is not racist KKK thread - I am just wondering)
Guest Mirage2k
I'm not sure about the leaders, but I had always thought that the USSR was always Russia-centric. -Andrew ------------------ Throw me a frickin' smiley, people! Gregory Deych
Lenin was Russian. He may have had some mixture of other nationalities at level of grandparents, but by that standard very few people are "anything". Chernenko was probably Ukranian. IntelWeenie
The ex-Soviet Union was comprised of literally HUNDREDS of different nationalites; some small, some large. Even modern Russia is not all "russian". Most communist leaders sought to supress feelings of nationalism as the felt (probably correctly) that such feelings would undermine their force of rule "from the center". Many feel that one of Hitler's biggest mistakes was to quash nationalism in occupied Soviet territories instead of encouraging it, thus helping secure his rear areas. ------------------ "Belly to belly and everything's better" - Russian proverb
killmore
See everyone seems to associate Soviet Union with Russians. But as far as I see there were no Russians in power there. Lenin was "mostly" non russian.
