Line of sight & more

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Is there / are there - events in any of the CM series whereby you can locate an enemy unit yet he doesn't see you until you engage that is... I believe the element of 'surprise' is an essential part of tactical war ?

ive seen this at least once / when you 'ambush' an enemy bunker from behind... They cannot see you or at least - cannot fire on you unless they come out.

Thanks guysz

I think there are many such situations in CM - just like real life.

First the obvious - technological disparity: in CMBS the electronics are so superior for the US forces that frequently they see much further and more frequently in worse visibility conditions than their opponents. You also see that vehicle design and optics are a factor - German kit in WW2 is often going to have better vision blocks, better distribution of vision devices on vehicles, enabling them to see and shoot first.

Second, the human factor - sometimes one unit is simply more situationally aware than another and sees it first. Sight is not simultaneous the moment LOS is achieved.

I've had many instances where I have fired on an enemy that had no idea I was there, and the same has happened to me.

Yes. This is trivial to arrange on most maps. If it's not the case for you, then you need to think about how you're using/moving through terrain and concealment.

Bocage is perhaps the archetypical terrain in which to arrange for your troops to be able to see enemy without them having seen you, but it's also entirely possible in urban terrain, and forest.

LOS is generally reciprocal: if you can see their eyes, they have a chance of being able to see yours. Using concealment properly will reduce the enemy's chance of getting a spot on your troops. Bunkers, of course, don't have any eyes in their back, so sneaking up from the rear is a good way of staying out of sight.
