MikeyD
Any paint program that can save in .pdf format should do. The fancier the program the better, of course. I'm a Photoshop guy. The one complication is the game's method of producing knockouts - adding an extra Alpha channel (besides the usual Red/Green/Blue) in B&W to designate where the knockout holes are. That's how you get individual leaves on trees. There's a way to get around that, I think. You can supply the Alpha channel as a separate piece of B&W art named 'filename-alpha.bmp'... or some variation of that name. Its been years since I've seen it in use so I may have the naming wrong. Hopefully you can just add a separate channel to the file.
Kieme(ITA)
As a reference I am using RealWorldPaint, which is also free.
emccabe
also probably a stupid question but if I want to modify uniform textures what file do I edit
MikeyD
Ooooh, there's LOTS of uniform texture to choose from in there! My advice is to get into the .BRZ (using Rez Explode) and just go rummaging through the art. Its rather like browsing in a shopping mall. Up one aisle and down the other.
