I so have to get back into this fight you guys are having too much fun. Where can you place Allied mortars that end up stuck? Not that I want to repeat I just never noticed anything that looks like such a trap.

Send me a turn and you will see... :)

Seriously, the terrain is steeper in real life than in game due to rounding errors in my metric conversion. Due to the way CM models elevation changes there are a lot of "cliffs" on the map that aren't present. in real life (which is why I am okay with the metric rounding errors). As a result, there are spots on the map in which a unit can be "trapped" because they are surrounded by cliffs. "Baneman's peak" - yes that label will be inserted ingame, was one such area. I have now added a footpath for access (I haven't tested it though).

edit: footpath tested, Baneman's Bluff now accessible!

I spent some time today getting setup - convoy management and all that. You should have the turn tomorrow...

Ah I see. I never noticed. I set my mortars up in a nice cumfy place where they have warm beds and are on call and ready for my FOs to decide what to shoot at.

I'm having fun romping around as Allies against sfhand. As yet, we're still in the early phase of the battle. I'm gaining intel on his forces. That intel is bought at the expense of shattered metal and blood. As usual.

That's funny. That's exactly how he's done it against my Axis lot. Although I feel I've failed to inflict maximum damage. :(

I've just found another turn waiting for me...off to that when I'm done here.

As Allies, I'm pursuing an offensive strategy. sfhand is being coy... Part of my plan is to clear that isolated hill on my right. The one that sits just north of the river and is not connected to any other feature. Well, last turn as I sent some jeeps and light tanks across it to check it out, I stumbled upon a nice little nest of Germans! Lots of machinegun fire later, and there are fewer Germans. This turn will see how many there are. It's either a recce element sfhand put there, or it's a stronger unit, being saved for a counterattack into my rear.

Ahh, fun little game, no?

I had his nest of Nazis nicely ensconced in maze of machinegun fire... A jeep and a Stuart, with more flooding the zone. (Light woods) His last man through a potato masher...into my jeep. Sigh. At least he died without knowing what he'd done. I now have 2 more dead. That brings my total casualties to....five. All from jeeps. (I've lost a Sherman, a Stuart, 2 jeeps, and an M8 Scout Car. Only 5 casualties. That points to minimal kinetic energy kills.) I've decided to brigade the unhorsed crews into an anti-minefield unit. I'll mention that to them later.

I'm scratching my head about this... this is the 2nd time your moving vehicles have spotted first in the woods. I would have thought the smaller stationary unit (people) would have a spotting advantage in this situation. This does not bode well for my plan :) (I don't actually have a plan, but it sounds better this way)

edit: I just realized this is the 2nd time my side has benefited from an extremely lucky grenade :)

Well, then that means all the vehicles I lost this morning did so for me, as well! ;)

sfhand had far more in that little woods than I thought. And a 'schreck team in the middle hill mass got off a nice ambush, as well. There can't be any calls that my tanks spot too well after THAT turn. Very ugly. I lost 4 (?) tanks. I didn't get any shots off. Not a good way to start my morning coffee...

Well, based on his dealings with you, he has ( as the Allies ), decided to just arty all the treelines to death.

Heh... one intuitive stonk on a tree line that, gasp, turns out has an AT gun in it is now considered artying all the treelines? The other treeline has a confirmed AT gun in it. Lol, propaganda is good!

I'm thinking of letting the Allied player know what he/she is up against in this first battle, i.e., a Pz Div Escort Co reinforced with light tanks and a Kriegsmarine Co. and urging them to familiarize themselves with the units. I know in the battle with Baneman I will be able to push harder once I know all his AT guns are KO'ed. My goal against Baneman is to secure the northern bank with as many Shermans battle ready as possible. The Kriegsmarine troops have no AT capabilities while the Pz Div guys have some bite (3 ATG's, 3 schreck teams, and faust carrying infantry squads). If I play my hand right I won't have to go driving tanks through the woods.

The latest duel in the woods with Ken was exciting and my guys far exceeded my expectations - after a rocky start! The P3 matches up nicely with Stuarts and schrecks and fausts do the job on Shermans...

Engagement range? In our earlier light tank duel (this game) at longer ranges the PIII was unable to knock out any of your Stuarts, IIRC (it did manage to get one crew to bail though). In the earlier engagement both types of tanks were getting penetration with your superior numbers eventually winning the day. I don't really remember the combat outcomes of when you were German, it seems like a long time ago.

Bad idea IMO. The Germans are up against it already, letting the Allied player know what they have is holding their hand unnecessarily and/or making it very difficult for the Axis player.

In reality you would be cautious all the way ( standard disclaimer : unless, c3k :P )

c3k, you would be proud - in my battle, 2 panicked tank crewmen huddled next to their KO'd tank ( I couldn't move them, because ... panicked ), still had the nous to pick off 3 bazooka bearing GI's carelessly trotting through the woods.

For once in CMBN, pistol use was not unrealistic,  range was about 20m.

Everywhere else, things have gone to pot, but at least those 2 men may be forgiven for failing to get off a shot at the enemy Stuart even though they got the spot first   ( I've never used that silly 2 man French thing before - does it have to be buttoned to shoot ? )

Only if you want to use the cannon and not your sidearm! And you've just discovered why one-man turrets are no longer used. Two man crew: one man drives, the other man does everything else. :)

This turn, I've destroyed half a dozen evil Nazi trucks! Ah ha! My jeeps have been avenged! I've finally located one of his ATG's (suspicious about another location), his ambushing 'schreck will be confirmed to be dead, a PzIII died in the woods, and my attack otherwise continues...

No more turns from me until Sunday night...

So unbuttoned to spot means it will never shoot, or does he duck down inside to shoot a la T34/76 ? ( probably loses the spot if the latter, just like the T34/76 :( )

( I know I could test, but (a) I'm at work and this is more interesting (b ) just don't seem to have much time atm :( )

Either way, they've done more harm with their Lugers than with their tank !
