poesel
Over at http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/ we have an ongoing campaign to recreate the events of Operation Overlord. The campaign started over two years ago and with over 60 battles played it is still going strong. Yesterday marked the end of June 10th in the campaign and thus we were exactly 70 years behind the real events. For this occasion I drew a map to compare the real progress with the one of the campaign. red : real blue : campaign (please note that the date of the map is wrong - it's the blank map template) It is surprisingly similar! Here is the current map with units:
Bootie
Yes... uncanny. The US Airborne are faring better west of Utah Beach and the Omaha beach head is slightly more constricted but apart from that spot on. I wonder if Ithikial could weigh in with his awesome reports.
ChappyCanuck
I signed up as a replacement player for that campaign months ago, but unfortunately nothing yet. Campaigns, IMO, are much more interesting as you have to look at fighting over a lengthy period - squandering resources can have serious and poor long range results. I played in a Primosol Bridge campaign years ago (CMx1) and it was a blast! Good stuff...love the campaign update
DavidFields
As with many replays of the Normandy campaign, the link-up of the two beaches, so vital in real life, can be hard to do. I speculate that this is because the German "player" has a lot better sense of what is the strategic situation versus the German command at the time. I think that emphasizes what a close call the success of the invasion was, and that the confusion for the Germans caused by the paradrops was an important component of the invasion plan. [The situation on the eastern side of Sword looks particularly interesting. Someone is potentially surrounded and at risk for being completely destroyed--but which side is actually going to suffer that fate?]
Ithikial_AU
I wonder if Ithikial could weigh in with his awesome reports. Oh alright... We're also tracking every casualty and vehicle kill caused in game. Two years of data collection. So far the Timeline of Carnage looks something like this: Note that D-Day was special and had four campaign turns, June 7th onwards has one each. The Allied forces have a mix of forces at their disposal and are using everything they've got. US Airborne truly getting a work out. Meanwhile the poor German Infantry is taking most of the Allied onslaught. All of these facts and figures can be sorted by player, formation type, nationality etc. Mix and match to your hearts content. I have no idea of casualties day by day for the Normandy Campaign but would be good to see how we're tracking.
