jakla1027 Posted March 10, 2013 Share Posted March 10, 2013 I know this museum use to be at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland, but it was scheduled to move to Fort Lee, Virginia by the end of 2011. So does anyone know if this move has been fully completed? Also with the latest government spending cuts does anyone know if the museum will still be open to the general public? Now one last thing, if this museum is open, just where the heck is it located in Fort Lee? I've done a few google searches trying find the answers to these questions but have only found news about the move that date back to 2009. No news that is more recent let alone a current website related to the Fort Lee museum location. I have also look on google maps/earth and have found no such location for the new museum. Thus i figured I'd turn to the grog's here for information, news, or even first hand knowledge of the current status of the United States Army Ordnance Museum. Free admission, friendly staff, outstanding small arms collection -- from wheellocks to Bullpups -- and well worth a visit, both for firearms enthusiasts and those interested in the Industrial Revolution. Those ingenious Yankees passed back and forth a lot of key mass production / "copy exact" techniques with their neighbours in the textile mills (and private arms manufacturers like Colt, S&W, Winchester, etc.) that were later adopted and pushed further by the railroads, steel and then the automotive industries in the Midwest starting in the mid 1800s. And yes, they also lifted (and then reexported) a lot of ideas from the great European arsenals. MikeyD Posted March 12, 2013 Share Posted March 12, 2013 Wikipedia says the museum building was shuttered Sept 2010 but outdoor exhibits and remaining the old armor are still accessible to the public, 7 days a week 9am to 4:30 PM. You can get a visitors pass at the gate. I don't know what's still there and what's been moved.
