There are quite a lot of Yak-3's flying' date= and they have a superficial resemblance to P-39's, with a bubble canopy and smooth sloping front fuselage.

That's a real possibility, but the fin doesn't look quite right and the ventral radiator seems wrong too. But I won't swear to this since I didn't get such a great look at them. Puzzling.

I managed to pick up a NZ aviation magazine while passing through Auckland airport with this very picture on the cover and a couple of interesting stories inside about the restoration. The centrefold picture is good enough to frame so I reckon that's what I'll be doing. Simply gorgeous!
