  1. The idea as such is not bad, but she has a certain squeamishness when it comes to select forces that will destroy me. No idea why. Could just be an aversion to wargames in general, I guess. Glad to say that the marriage part works a lot better. But I think another way to catch extremes would be to let the AI choose the forces, save the game and cease fire. That would tell me how many enemy soldiers are there, but no other details. At least I would be warned of very funny AI before I go through all the planning.
  2. Ah, good idea. No problem with that, a) I don't need a month to forget things and b) I don't think it is not too unralistic to have some idea of who the opposition is if you are less than 1 kilometre away. Anyway, I just do this to prepare for some gaming against a live opponent. Could be, I guess. I should have let one of them live and ask
  3. I get the same information in the AAR, don't I? It reported 3 Germans killed and 0 on everything else on the German side.
  4. At QB start, export the roster of your side as a text file (indented for unit hierarchy), possibly also listing their key equipment (as seen in the "special equipment" slot). Ability to define fixed camera positions that can be called with a shortcut. Use system fonts instead of the tiny pixelish fonts we see today. Ability to run app in a window (as opposed to full screen). This would enable me to see the battlefield while doing my admin in external apps (like map.army). Ability to re-name units or leaders. This would solve the problem that the QB random unit roster gives me 3 "Recon Platoons" (i. e. all with the same name) or multiple leaders with the same name. Of course, the AI could simply avoid that problem by itself. Not a high priority. Some things that have been mentioned before: Co-op support, i. e. splitting the force of one side between at least 2 players. Contour lines or better terrain shading to see elevations better. LOS check improvement, as asked for by RocketMan. That said, I am mostly happy with the game as it is. I come from boardgaming and consider CM as a replacement for admin-intensive games like ASL, so graphics etc. do not have a high priority for me.
  5. Thanks for the reply! Yes, I forgot - it was a meeting engagement. And I did not view the map, but I am certain that was the one and only unit, coming (as usual) from the opposite corner and dawdling around in the woods for almost 20 minutes. Well, it was not too many hours of my life lost, and then of course we always ask for "realism" – a real soldier would have considered this best possible result, I guess, and here I stand whining … I assumed the AI would internally try to achieve a certain balance in buying points (even for a random setup on both sides), but maybe it does and just allows a rather large variance. Or this sole HQ element was particularly valuable, like knowing the complete batallion deployment plans – and I just shot them !
  6. New to the game, please forgive me if I did not find any similar thread. In a QB on tiny/tiny/Veteran I got about 2.5 recon platoons available (which seems pretty normal when choosing "Infantry Only") against random German forces. In a brave fight against boredom I took all objectives and never saw any opposition … never? Well, a 3-soldier HQ unit appeared in the end (first saw them after 12 of 30 minutes, and then again at around 20). Is this normal? Or just possible, but unusual? Or should I sue BF because they take me for an idiot who could not manage more opposition ? (They may be right, but how doo they know?)
  7. This seems to have extremely low priority … 8 years later, same behaviour.
  8. Now this is tricky - and it works! I am not sure which part of the sequence actually stops the Target command. It also worked with slow forward movement as long as I add "Face", otherwise (without "Face") the tank just kept firing. With 15 sec Pause, 1 square Slow Forward, Face I get 3 shells off (the 3rd during the movement). I also could stop firing smoke by executing 2 short backwards moves without adding "Face": Target Smoke, Pause 5, Reverse, Reverse fires just 2 rounds, the 2nd one during the 1st Reverse move. Thank you!
  9. Thanks a lot! Yes, I figured I could use a combination of movement and fire commands but thought I could spare the experimentation involved . However, I cannot get the tank to wait with firing. A sequence pause - move - target is executed in the order pause & target - move (& target, if shells left). Shooting always starts immediately on execution.
  10. I'm new to CM, trying to find my way through the commands and I did not find an answer to this in the forum - please excuse me if this has indeed been answered before: When firing smoke directly from a unit, i. e. not as a part of an artillery support mission, I only have the option "Target Smoke", right? (I am not talking about the self-defense "Pop Smoke" command, I want to place smoke tactically & at a distance.) Is it possible to limit this fire to, say, 2 or 3 shells? What I experienced is that when I order a Sherman to "Target Smoke" it fires 5 or 6 shells in under 1 minute. I tried to Pause it for 45 secs and then Target Smoke, but even though the Pause counted down the tank fired merrily away in the interval. I suspect I am missing something obvious, but what? (I do not discuss whether it makes sense to fire fewer shells, I just want to know if it is possible.)
  11. OK, I can answer all that now myself, for the benefit of those who have similar doubts and questions: The thing to solve all of that was to get the Demo from the Battlefront website. With the Demo you get the manuals (they are in the app's folder, inside the Applications folder, this is the same for the full game). Both the Demo and the actual game run fine on this Mac and this OS (11.2 a.k.a. Big Sur). I have 2 monitors, and CMBN occupies one of them in full-screen mode but leaves the other alone. App switcher (cmd-tab) works fine from and to CMBN, for eaxample to look up the manual (you cannot just navigate to the other monitor because the cursor is locked on the game screen). Not tried #4 yet, but other posts make clear that it should work. We'll try this evening. I got the full CMBN package now and, from some of the videos on Youtube, I realize that I must have tried, ages ago, the very first version of Combat Mission. The results were so that I dropped the project. Thank you, Battlefront and the more persistent community, to have heaved this game to its current level!
  12. I want to start playing CMBN. The situation is that I have a 2017 iMac with max. RAM, MacOS 11.2. My friend against whom I'll play has a Win10 machine. I have the following questions, maybe someone can help me out before I invest? From the discussion I gather that I should avoid buying via AppleStore and rather get the game via BF. Correct? Is the game still supported on Mac, i. e. developed or at least biug-fixed? Asking only because most discussions involvong MacOS are awfully dated (knowledge base recommends to install MacOS 9 … was that before the last ice age or after? ) . Is it likely that the game will run on my Mac and my OS version? Will I be able to play against my friend, despite the OS difference? Thanks for any information you can give! The game looks very interesting (I come from boardgaming, i. e. ASL, Conflict of Heroes, Breakout Normandy etc.) but at the price I thought I'd better pre-check. Hobbygeneral's video series on Youtube also looks as if this was a game I should like. Lutz (from Berlin, Germany), BGG nickname PunTheHun
