Indeed this is how it would be expected to be handled.

Customers should never see this kind of thing. IMHO.

I do this sort of stuff for a living, and I'm honestly appalled that they thought it was a good idea to just do their testing in prod. Like that's amateur hour stuff, only suggested as a joke and not something to be done for real.

Either they thought it was a good idea, in which case I have concerns about their professionalism, or they didn't think it would matter because PBEM++ isn't being used, in which case why the hell have they been delaying releasing the other games on steam and holding up patch releases?

  2. CMCW still allows people to play via PBEM.

There is now an additional multiplayer mode which will email you when a turn arrives, however it does have shortcomings as there is no way to communicate with your opponent (it's essentially anonymous) and I believe there is an as-yet unfixed bug where in certain circumstances one player will not be able to see the results screen. Plus when the slitherine servers go down there's no way to play a match. I will say that when it works, it works (so long as you are happy with not communicating with your opponent), but I don't know how active it is.

I haven't used the new multiplayer mode because of the shortcomings. CM Helper and Dropbox, while being a bit of an initial technical overhead, is very stable, and it's easy to communicate with people and arrange games on the unofficial discord server, which has over 1600 members and is highly active (there's an invite in my signature).

Updated CMSF2 and Black Sea (1st Quarter) - both previously released Matrix/Slitherine CM Families will get the PBEM++ and Tournament systems as free updates.  Any bug fixes and what not that have come up from Cold War development will be rolled in as well.

Once the final approval and posting of the Cold War patch is complete, releasing patches for CMSF2 and Black Sea should come out shortly.  Any cumulative and relevant bug fixes that were done for Cold War will, of course, be included.

Does this mean that the LAV-TUA will be fixed? It's been a few years now and the crew still don't use the optics on the vehicle, making it all but useless.

Same for the Gill, if there is a difference in elevation between launcher and target it will consistently miss.

Thanks for the reply - it makes sense to use more off-map artillery with pre-planned barrages, but then problem arises with using artillery after this point - you still need a spotter in LOS to the enemy, and therefore able to be shot are surely?

Yup, that's what the aggressive scouting is for. Give the FO a short target arc and move him to a position from which he can call for fires. Similarly, you can move on-map mortar teams to positions from which they can engage enemy positions and engage in direct fire.

  5. There are a couple of ways to approach this.

You can use mortars or artillery to suppress or destroy enemy positions (the former is far easier than the latter), giving you the breathing space to move troops into position.

You can use mortar- or artillery-dropped smoke to break up lines of sight and isolate enemy positions from each other.

While the above are being done, move MG teams and vehicles into position to further increase suppression and destruction, followed by infantry pushing to mop up.

Aggressive scouting is necessary to identify enemy positions.

In the WW2 games in particular on-map mortars in direct-fire mode are excellent at achieving suppression and obscuration in timely manner.

Because they aren't given an easy opportunity to find opponents. The opponents finder section of these forums is pretty dead, and FGM really isn't much better.

Check out the unofficial discord server, there's an invite in my signature. 1600+ members and far more CM activity than here or TFGM.

Again, not consistent with this war so far.  Artillery is, again, doing most of the damage.  Infantry are now becoming as much ISR as anything else in this.

Artillery has almost always caused most of the damage and done most of the killing for over a century now. This is nothing new.

This whole "tanks are obsolete because there are weapons that can kill them" drum that keeps on being banged on this forum is frankly silly - there has never been a time where tanks were not killable by anti-tank weapons and didn't get knocked out or destroyed in obscene numbers, yet tanks are still incredibly useful at doing the whole mobile protected firepower thing.

You're  basically saying that the recent fighting in Ukraine has proven that tanks are obsolete, yet almost every single attack and counterattack we see *still* has tanks playing an important part in the combined arms warfare thing.

The original PBEM system is not being replaced. It will still be there for you to use with whatever PBEM helper tools that you prefer. There is currently no work being done on PBEM++. The work is on the tournament system. PBEM++ appears to be working as intended and, at this time, there are no plans to change it at any point.

How many people are even using PBEM++ or the tournament feature, and do the numbers warrant holding off the steam release of CMBN?

Didn't only something like 6 out of the 12 people who signed up for it actually participate in the CW tournament?

Most scenarios start when you need to deploy your forces. Baranovichi RT starts with 12 trucks at the start of a 3km road. Tactically irresponsible to start driving along the three km road.

And yet at some point you're going to have to move potentially dozens of units along a road. If you play Cold War, you know that many scenarios are battalion plus in size.
