  1. I ended up downloading some BS () Demo and tinkered around with the training scenario that has the four Bradley's attacking a town. Everything seemed to work okay, so far. I need to mentally prepare myself for this learning curve, especially since I'm also swamped with familiarizing myself with Win10 and trying to get the old Sims 2 installed and running to feed my house-building addiction.
  2. Okay, so the menu remains visible for some people, but not for others, depending on what browser they're using, what magnification, and perhaps on their OS. At least admins are now aware of this, if they weren't before. ps - Amused to see "somefink" is still being referenced. Twenty years of somefinks is, after all, something.
  3. Wrong direction, see if the menu disappears when you zoom in more. But yeah, in any case it seems to be a browser setting issue.
  4. My website resolution was too large. I see the "Community" link, as well as the others, now that I've zoomed out by one level. You can see this yourself by pressing the Ctrl key and moving your mousewheel to change the website resolution. At a certain point as you zoom in, the links will be gone. I think it's unusual to have hotlinks simply disappear from a webpage at different resolutions. If those links had appeared at some weird location on the page, I would have known what the problem was. Anyway, thanks for responding.
  5. Since yesterday, there doesn't appear to be a link from the BFC front page to these discussion forums. The only thing listed are the various games. There is a login option, but I think it's just for the store because my forum login didn't work. The only reason I was able to come here to make this post is because at the very bottom of the game listings there is a link to "Tech Support Forum." Did someone mess up the website code or is it a user error on my end? The latter is entirely possible because I'm still having teething problems with my new Win10 installation.
  6. Resurrecting an old thread here, but don't the GoG games show the version numbers in the lower-right corner of the menu screen?
  7. Interestingly, board wargame designer Bruce Maxwell has also chosen the BAOR as the first sequel/expansion for his upcoming Air & Armor game, largely due to accidentally having stumbled upon an expert on the BAOR. I wonder whether it's the same person BFC is using. Also, isn't it British Army of the Rhine, rather than on? I've bever heard it called the latter.
  8. Well, I gave up after about ten minutes looking, on and off. Was starting to think that they're not really aiming to sell me a game here, but I knew that couldn't be the case. You'd think demos would be front center. Yup, that's the one I wanted. And the sales blurp even advises to try the demo before buying. Okay, I'll try one of the others - thanks for the links.
  9. Perhaps a dumb question, but where are the CM2 demos located? I don't see any links on the store pages and they don't seem to be in the "Support" or "Patches" areas, nor a couple of other places I looked. Do I need a store account to have access to them?
  10. Ah, that's where I should've put this thread - sorry. If the admins want to put it there, do it. I won't be buying that rig. In fact, I might not be buying any rig in the near future because the techs at the store yesterday made me aware of something I hadn't known, namely, that they're pretty sure I can still upgrade my Win7 to Win10 for free. Until now I've been under the impression that I long ago missed out on a deadline for that. If that works, I'll happily rumble along with my 15-year-old "Beast" (literally what they called it when it was built, it was near top of the line) for a few more years. Heck, I might even still try CM 2, since I'm about half-way between "minimum" and "suggested" specs. So, lets put this thread to bed, for now. In the meantime, I'll be perusing the CM2 tech support forum.
  11. Thanks for the heads up re AMD versus Intel, although if you say the CM engine is already old, would AMD really make a big diff? I had an AMD computer prior to the one I have now, and I never had any issues. This goes back more than 15 years, of course. Thanks also for the link. Thanks for your response, but I'm not getting a laptop - no way, no how. I like a separate keyboard, monitor, etc. Plus, I have a very comfortable computer chair and need to be able to lean back and look at a large monitor, due to spinal problems, instead of being hunched over a laptop. I don't consider laptops to be gaming-compatible, nor compatible with being on the internet all day long. Also, I have absolutely no need for the compactness or "mobility" of a laptop, which to a very large degree is what you're paying for. So, I'm about ready to head to that local computer store I linked to in my OP, so I'll be asking the techs there a lot of questions, one of which will be, where the hell is the CD/DVD drive? LOL. Hope you all had a nice weekend. I'll be back here if I have any more questions, and I'm always open to more suggestions.
  12. As the header says. I have no idea what to look for, regarding technical aspects, for an okay/decent gaming computer nowadays. I have an excellent local place that builds their own and they have several models to choose from, ranging in price from about $650 to a little over $3,000. I don't want to spend more than about $1,200, and I m not inclined to buy something from a big box store or similar. The Battlefront games will probably be one of my primary gaming endeavors, as I was a fan of the original Combat Mission games, 20 years ago. I figure if I get a computer that can play these newer games, I'll be able to play anything else that might interest me. Primarily a wargamer, I figure the various games by other publishers like Matrix wouldn't be a problem if I can run the newer Battlefront games. In short, what specs do I need to meet to play your latest games, and perhaps a couple/few years down the road? What is your latest game with the most demanding specs? Here are a couple options I have for pre-builts: The Stealth, for $649.99: https://www.shopsws.com/stealth The Premier i3, for $1,199.99: https://www.shopsws.com/premier Here's their page of pre-built models, which are all out of my price range except for the two listed above: https://www.shopsws.com/desktops
  13. Admins can feel free to move this post to an appropriate forum if this is the wrong one. I'm looking for a gamer that used to go by the handle "Strong Yankee" some years ago, or perhaps even recently. I know he was active in probably more than one computer wargaming forum/website, although it may not have included Battlefront.com. I'm interested in finding out which websites he was, or perhaps still is, active. He used to use this avatar (or a very similar one):
  14. Are there any streamers who play any of the Combat Mission games anywhere?
  15. Thanks, IanL. I only ever played one of the old trio of games via the TCP/IP method once, many years ago, and as I vaguely remember there were no cheat issues. Otherwise I only PBEM.
  16. I think Battlefront.com ought to provide a free download for Flight Commander 2, which they put into the public domain many years ago, along with the last patch and the Mission Builder. I can provide all three, if needed. It's still the best and only modern-day air combat game of its type. Right now, the game can be downloaded at various "abandonware" sites, which really doesn't do it justice. In fact, I think a remake is long overdue.
  17. Jesus F. Christ, such a simple question and yet so many conflicting answers. Do any of you actually play these games? I'm going to ass-u-me it's not possible to replay turns before sending them to the opponent (which is why it's called "We-Go"), since I don' think the developers would be that dumb to change the one feature that has kept people playing these games for two decades.
  18. As an avid player of the original trio of CM games, I have a very simple question regarding SF2: Is it cheat-proof like the old games?
  19. Thanks for trying to keep this thread on topic. So, just to reiterate, at this point I am merely considering replacing my old computer. I'm still in the exploring stage. Also, I will have it custom built, just like my previous three or four computers, and I will not do this myself. I think what I might eventually do is get a couple of options for a system and perhaps run those options by you folks in this thread and see what you think. But this may not happen for a while. As I said previously, I'm still running Win7 at this time, so I haven't even upgraded to Win10, which will probably happen before anything else. In the meantime, thanks for your answers again. ps- all my cost estimates are in US dollars
  20. Both my power supply and video card are only about 6 years old, after my original ones crapped out. Wow, I thought the video card would be the first thing that would need replacing. I was hoping to keep the cost under 1k. Would I be able to run SF2 at all on my current computer if I "upgraded" from Win7 to Win10?
  21. Thanks for your responses, although some of it is Greek to me. Okay, I Googled GPU, which used to be called a video card. My current, 12-year-old system: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @2.50GHz 2.50GHz Installed Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.00 GB Useable) System Type: 32-bit Operating System Video card: AMD Radeon (TM) R7 360 Series My monitor is 24", with a resolution of 1920x1080. I don't see an option for a higher resolution. In order to get resolutions of 2560x1440 or 1920x1200, would I need to get a physically larger monitor? I would prefer not to.
  22. I'm considering replacing my 12-year-old desktop gaming computer, which barely meets the minimum specs for running SF2. Although I'm a longtime player of the original CM trio of games, I've never owned or played SF or SF2. My question is whether the "suggested" specs for SF2, or perhaps something a little bit better, would make a good gaming computer by today's standard. I frankly don't foresee ever playing anything more demanding than the SF2 series of games. (I can't play first-person shooters because they make me nauseous, nor do I even want to.) My new computer would be custom built, so I could go with whatever specs I needed or wanted. The suggested specs for the FS2 base game are (taken from the product page): Windows 10 or MacOS 10.13.x (High Sierra) Pentium IV 2.8 GHz or equivalent speed AMD processor or better 1 GB VRAM or better and must support 1024x768 or higher resolution in OpenGL DirectX 12 compatible Sound Card (Windows only) 8 GB RAM or more 12 GB Hard Drive space The game does not work in a virtualized environment (virtual machine)
  23. Related question: Can a person using the GOG versions play-by-email or TCP/IP against someone using the original Battlefront versions? Are there any compatibility issues between the various published versions as far as PBEM or TCP/IP, provided both players are running with the last patches? I have a friend who is thinking about buying the GoG versions so he and I can PBEM or TCP/IP. I have the original Battlefront versions. I'm thinking the GoG version would be the best way to go for a newbie player, correct? Another question: Firstly, I'm still running Win7, which I've had to reinstall a few months ago. After reinstalling the three original games and applying the latest patches and Radeon graphics fixes, all of them run with no problems. However, I've noticed a couple of odd things. While CMBO and CMAK start immediately after I click their icons, CMBB has a 43 second delay before its splash screen comes up, which is something I don't remember having been the case in my previous installs. Also, although the CMBO patch says it's v1.12, its splash screen says v1.3, which is also something I don't remember being the case previously, although I may just not have noticed it. Like I said, all three games seem to run fine, so I'm just wondering about these issues (which may be non-issues).
