Hey all, I might get in trouble for this but I'm gonna do it anyway.
While we are all very concerned about the deaths in UKR it's also important to remember the other slaughter that's been going on for two years. Another covid wave, very contagious, is on the way. I know this crowd skews a bit older so lots of folks here are more at risk.
If you aint vaxxed, get vaxxed. If you aint boosted, get boosted. Only 50% of americans are boosted, though 75% are vaxxed. Immune system resistance wanes over time, particularly w Pfizer (moderna better in this respect). At Omicron peak we were losing ~2500 americans a day (~4000 per day at the pre-vaccine covid peak last year). That nearly all those omicron deaths were PREVENTABLE is a tragedy. And that tragedy is driven by propaganda, much of it spawned from Russia and percolated thru facebook. So if you want to give a big FU to Putin, get your shots!
I don't want to lose any of you excellent Combat Mission aficionados.
Hong Kong has a huge percentage of old people who refuse to get vaxxed, it's gonna be a bloodbath.
Thanks, I will take my vacation now.
I have liked your 'controversial' off-topic post, even if it is *ahem* rather US-centric .
Somehow I don't think you'll be vacationing just yet .

Well obviously you haven't my friend , was just wondering about a few over at the 'uber-thread'.

Is there a way to tell if certain forumites have been given a holiday, temporary or persistent? Just curious.

the US admin had done tons and tons of 'what if the Ukrainians hold out' diplomatic and logistical legwork... the EU governments had already been prepped for the worst case scenario and had already agreed to many of the actions they later took. In fact, DC did such a good job
Tongue in cheek here - God bless America! Now you can shoot me down in flames...

Our intuition regarding kinetic energy isn't that great, particularly when dealing with things of very different mass - we tend to visualise things more in momentum terms. The Kinzhal may have the same KE of 220 Abrams at full speed, but it has the same momentum as 1.25 Abrams at full speed. Which comparison is more relevant depends a lot on what exactly you are considering.
Without too much checking I also like that. So it would not be much better to be impacted by 1.25 Abrams at full speed than it would be by a Kinzhal . Not sure about the destroyers, you may bounce off if you're lucky.
Anyway I feel we digress .

Re. Kinzhal.
I come up with crazy numbers for the kinetic energy.
500 kg warhead traveling at 12300 km/h (Mach 10):
0.5 * 500.0 * (12300./3.6)**2 = 2.918403e+09
M1 tank (70 t) travelling at 70 km/h:
0.5 * 70000.0 * (70./3.6)**2 = 1.323302e+07 J
Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (8300 t) travelling at 30 kt:
0.5 * 8300 * 1000 * 15.9**2 = 1.049162e+09 J
So the equivalent of the Kinzhal missile warhead in terms of kinetic energy would be:
- 220 Abrams tanks travelling at full speed
- 2.8 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers travelling at flank speed
Does this make any sense?!
On the other hand 1 kg TNT has the equivalent of 4.184 MJ, so this kinetic energy corresponds to 697.5 kg TNT. Which sounds more plausible than 2.8 destroyers at flank speed.
Best regards,
ThommWithout too much checking, I like your calculations and the huge Mach 10 speed squared obviously takes the day.
Fun stuff in a non-fun setting .

Thanks for the nice pics and ermm extensive videos . Haven't been there before, but I do hang around at the Bovington Tank Museum (Dorset, UK) on a fairly regular basis, taking in the sights and the smells. If you're ever in the area I highly recommend it.

What, the one in the middle?

And the next question I asked about ammo was what ammo is pre-loaded in my tank prior to spotting an enemy tank, AT gun, infantry etc.? The answer was that it is abstracted such that the tank can always fire the correct round (assuming there is a correct round for every target). Abstract yes, but understandable in game terms.

I did see that and that's what actually brough up my questions. That thread seemed to be saying the convoy was more food, fuel, medical supplies etc.
This bit includes details of ammo, plus fuel and food if you scroll down a bit:

I am curious, if anyone knows, how are Russian artillery shells delivered or supplied?
The twitter threads in Haiduk's post below has a lot of answers to your questions as far as the famous 40-mile convoy is concerned (needs a bit of twitter-trudging though):

I was also wondering about the missiles, as we have seen notes like the one Steve mentioned below, but I suppose that is just about the Black Sea Fleet's stock?
8 hours ago, Battlefront.com said:ISW confirms several things that we've been speculating on regarding the activities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet:
- Russian amphib ships are empty and being floated towards Odessa to keep Ukrainian forces tied down
- Russia is out of cruise missiles, which has been suspected for a bit already

Concerning relative losses, this is pretty interesting to explore. Starts with Russian losses and scroll way down for Ukrainian losses, totals, and by actual vehicle type. If you hover over the individual numbers it links to a pic or video documenting it.
Disclaimers at the top about accuracy. If nothing else, a ton of quick pics showing destroyed equipment. I haven't seen anyone post a link to this but may have missed it so apologies if so.

the BBC is delusional thinking this a a good deal for Ukraine.
To be fair I don't think the BBC said it would be a good deal, that would not be for the BBC to decide. Or did I miss something?

Sburke, why would Russia not immediately sever Ukraine's ties to the Russian power grid on day one?
From the CBS article Sburke linked:
The two countries (Ukraine and Moldova, my addition) were previously part of the Integrated Power System that also includes Russia and Belarus. This made Ukraine dependent on Russia's grid operator despite there having been no electricity trade between the two countries for years.

+1 to George's comment. Started with RT, then BN, then FI, then FB, and F&R recently to add on to RT.
So all WW2 so far, although the modern bundle interests me, as does a certain Vietnam mod for SF2.
