So was I to be honest - researching for this title has caused me to question everything I knew about the Cold War and, as I served in a 1 (BR) Corps roled Divisional Intelligence Section for the last two years of the Cold War, I knew quite a lot.  3 Shock Army in the game time frame was a very different beast to one that I knew for instance.

3rd CAA was a TA, right?  Did anyone ever figure out how 3rd CAA and 2nd GTA were to be used?  I seem to remember tons of controversy about those two formations.  Some thought they would be in the 1st echelon.  Other's thought they would be split up into different OMG's and distributed right between the 1st and 2nd echelon

Either way, they couldn't have been used as a massed ready reserve as they would be nuked.

Incorrect - motor rifle regiments generally got the older kit but not T-72s.  Using 8 Guards Army, which would have been GSFG's first operational echelon in the American zone as the case study ...

Thanks for the clarification.  The T72's were for 2nd echelon troops in the West TVD and for export.

Imagine the logistics nightmare of having four different MBT's in service at the same time.

  3. Tank type was dependent on formation.  Motor Rifle got T62/T72’s while the tank regiment’s got T64/T80’s.

I believe the East German NVA was the only Pact army to get any T72’s.  Everyone else got T55’s and T62’s.

The cool thing about that scenario is that there are 3 different AI plans and you never know which one is going to happen. You actually lucked out early game in the AI plan you went up against. Some of the other plans would have jammed you up right out of the gate!

    Wait....it get's worse?😝

Very much enjoy your content. Hope you do some more CMCW in the future.

I'm just finishing up with a Red Thunder vid that ought to be posted tomorrow.  After that, I'm heading back to CW for more getting thrashed by the Group Soviet Forces Germany.

You did distressingly, unusually well in that scenario. Where are the holes through the M60A2 commander's cupolas that  I always get?😱

I honestly think I lucked out.  I received a total of two hits from very long range on my Starships.  The Sagger carrying BMP’s either got knocked out or went to ground early.  My first spot was a command BMP and that died alongside the REDFOR FO APC.  The Redeye SAM teams kept the Migs at bay.  I got zero casualties from the opening rocket attack.

I got all the lucky breaks.

Coming from the WWII titles and this being my first 'modern' title I'm not too clued up on how to make best use of mech. inf. especially in a defence situation so will be interesting to see if this was a bad move on my part

Use them EXACTLY as you would in the WW2 titles. M113's are just like the M3 halftracks... battle taxis that can become coffins.  Know that the tank isn't the undisputed champ of the battlefield, though.  Infantry now have access to ATGM's and just about anyone can carry a LAW or RPG (think about how the Germans passed out one shot Panzerfausts to as many squad members as possible from 1944 onwards.)

IFV's are slightly different in that both the BMP and the Bradley have the ability to dish it out.  They still lack the armor to shrug off some hits.

I'm in the same tank with you :D

only advice I can give is to, in general, position the tanks on the flanks and not in the center so they get angled shots. in 2 fahrbans scenario, perhaps one tank in some keyhole position in the center where the tank is protected with buildings. I've tried to push one m113 into the woods to the right flank but that got toasted while travelling. the rest of the infantry and their transport in the forward buildings in the center but on the cover arcs to engage any infantry. tows/laws outside of the buildings, especially to cover the road on the right flank that can't be seen from your initial position due to that woods on the right. APCs in key holes behind those advanced buildings in the center. those, as their infantry, on cover arcs (not longer than 200/300 meters) to protect the open terrain if the enemy manages to slip tank protection and gets that far.

I'm highlighting this.  You have got to get flank shots.  Stick them hull down and watch out for Ivan's arty trying to blind you.  If those T72's gets past your WEZ (weapons employment zone) on the Shillelaghs you are going to have major trouble.  The 152mm shells fired by the Starship are low velocity....bad news for killing tanks.

....I'm doing an AAR of this battle on Youtube.  The majority of the action for the scenario is included here.  Part two is imbound and will be more or less a cleanup with general observations.

All aircraft at this time should be dropping dumb ordnance in salvo.  Making multiple passes would be far less effective against the target and suicide versus air defense.

I fly IL2.  Even during WW2, you made one pass and dumped all ordinance on a single target whenever air defenses are present.  Anything else is a death wish.

About M60A2. It fires the late-generaltion MGM-51C Shilellagh missile with a minimum arming distance somewhere around 740m and a max range of 3000m (I just tested it out). The conventional rounds are low velocity and object to be fired much beyond... I dunno... maybe 1000m?

Thanks.  I'm 5 turns into the scenario in March 1979 with Starships versus T72's.  No spoilers, but I'm hoping for a hyperdrive.  The flight time on the ATGM's is terrifyingly long and they have to maintain LOS on target until impact. I *think* I may have gotten a mission kill at about 1700m, but not sure.

That Festung Posen video doesn't give any feel for the absolutely terrifying amount of small arms fire flying in every direction at once.

(play it - you'll see what I mean).

Good constructive criticism.  I prefer a documentarian style:  long shots at ground level.  You are going to miss certain things (like the sheer amount of lead flying), but I’m willing to sacrifice that for stylistic consistency.  YMMV.
