  1. If there is a map of Mosul, or at least NW Mosul I would purchase SF2 today. I may have spent some time on those lovely streets.

A couple of notes from that vacation:

I was (and remain) a huge fan of CMBB. When CMSF came out I purchased it immediately. I played one mission and never played again. Strykers were getting knocked out left and right by RPG-7s. Unless the ammo for those RPGs has changed significantly since 2004 the odds of destroying a Stryker with an RPG hit should be about 5%. That's a hit. Only about 20% fired actually hit especially once return fire begins (admittedly this probably had more to do with the experience level of the enemy). To be honest I've never seen a hit once suppression begins. 7 Strykers hit with RPGs (including one hit 4 times) led to one total loss (we used to store our POL on the outside...stopped that poor practice after a second platoon Stryker burned to the ground...no casualties and the only lost Stryker from combat) and one penetration leading to one casualty (that was ugly but he was evaced to Germany and survived). I believe RPGs are MASSIVELY overpowered in this simulation.

My next complaint...mortars. In particular 60mm mortars. I must admit, whether gaming or RL I have never taken mortars seriously. I used to mock our mortars saying their only purpose was to lay smoke. (Ironic as my kid is now a mortarman in the 101st...he wouldn't follow me into the decisive branch...armor. Sad.) So...summer 2004 in Mosul. Bn is having a volleyball tourney. Hot summer day, no missions going on....most of the Bn is gathered round watching the companies compete. (It was dull....I was actually in my conex playing games). Insurgents fire of a string of 60mm rounds. 3 land right on the court where they are playing volleyball. The rest of the Bn gathered in tightly. This should have been a disaster of epic proportions. As it was a third of those there got purple hearts...for scratches. Not one single serious injury. One hundred guys in T Shirts and shorts (no armor) and 3 60mm rounds land right in their midst...doing nothing. Mortars are overpowered as well!

  2. I'm ashamed to admit prior to this incident (Trying to reload 120mm mortars in Korsun 2017) the only experience I had reloading was when I discovered there were more SAMs in a BMP next to my empty Russian stinger teams. I moved the teams into the BMP and then out and they grabbed the ammo. I was happy and thought I had this figured out. Until this morning. 3 teams of 120mm mortars. All empty. 3 trucks from their team/platoon with ammo right next to them (no ammo bearer/assistant teams just the mortars). I move all three mortar teams into trucks. One team says 30 rounds (better than the 22 they started with) inside the truck and these rounds remain in its inventory when they leave. Good. The other two mortar teams say 60 rounds while they're in the truck but empty when I take them out. I have tried various combinations of trucks it doesn't seem to matter. There is additional ammo in the trucks. Why will one team reload and the other two won't?

    Thank you, Shawn.

  3. Let me preface this by stating that I am a CMx2 noob (which will no doubt become immediately obvious) despite owning RT for years. CMBB I know well but I have only recently actually took the time to learn the new mechanics and started playing the new ones. I am impressed and overall the CMx2 games are a great improvement over the old ones (which I still love).

I recently experienced something that told me I have much to learn about these games. I am on scenario 3 of the relief of AGN campaign for RT. The first objective (village) was very close to initial starting position so I figured it wouldn't be heavily occupied. (I based this on the previous 2 scenarios in the campaign where the first half of the map had been engagement with light forces while the scenario climax occurred at the back of the map.

I have 3 platoons of PzG and 10 Panthers...one of which has no main gun...point tank but I digress...The (extremely vulnerable) infantry stays in the deployment zone mounted up while the tanks move up and approach the village from three directions (OK 3 angles of attack but the same general direction). I have one scout team loaded on a tank and he bails in the woods prior to engaging the AT elements which I suspect are present. A few Soviet AT guns and rifles appear and are destroyed with minor damage and no loss. The tanks move just outside of the village to massacre infantry but none appear. Wait a turn. OK now move a platoon of Inf up to flush out any remnants as nothing was seen by the tanks. I push a squad and HQ SPW in front of houses I want to occupy from which I can create a zone to begin to clear the village. (I am either stupid or it's not possible to split squads inside of their half track which would save me time and lives). Half tracks arrive but I forget to dismount the inf so they just sit there loaded up for another minute. No contact. Now the fun begins. HQ team dismount and enter this building...rifle squad...dismount right here behind cover so I can split you up. Hit end turn. A few seconds pass. The boys hop out of their trucks and....every house opens up on the dismounting inf and pretty much eliminates them. Enemy infantry EVERYWHERE. Lesson learned (like it wasn't already known) 'don't dismount your infantry directly in front of automatic weapons!'

    So...aside from:

    1) Shelling the village prior to entry (if I know a village/hamlet/farm is seriously occupied I WILL shell it but on the big EF maps there are too many POIs to shell them all just to be sure).

    2) Dismounting my infantry in protective terrain at a safe distance to try to draw opposing inf into low casualty firefights so the tanks can spot and destroy. (the best option but it takes time and these maps are big)

    3) Observing with recon that I don't have

How does one determine if a POI is occupied by enemy infantry with the minimum amount of casualties while keeping offensive operations moving at a maximum pace?

  4. Only 3 years later. This scenario is easily worth the necro. My son and I are playing now. Perhaps 20-25 min in. He gets the Pz IVs and a company, I get the Panthers and a company while the Tigers and reduced strength (two platoon) company make up the reserve after taking the initial farm across the bridge. It's even further reduced as a heavy mortar barrage landed just as congestion reared it's ugly head at the farm just past the initial heavy bridge. Awesome. The reduced state of the grenadiers makes it feel so believable. I love this scenario. I have been playing CM since the CMBB Demo. This is the most fun I have ever had. Thank you for making it.
