  1. Rightly or wrongly I am with CptMiller and Bozowans here. Millers video is very telling and mimics what I have seen in battles vs the AI.

I have been waiting for a fix to continue my Road to Nijmegen campaign since April last year. To me the change to 4.0 was like chalk and cheese for the desperate Airborne in the later battles of this campaign.

    Not hating just saying.

I'm still on v. 3.12 and I don't have the vehicle pack. The scenario works on my end.

Since your crash happens at exactly 5 minutes, I don't think it's a hardware problem. I could imagine it's because the Germans get some reinforcement at that time. It's the earliest possible reinforcement arrival time.

To test this, I loaded the scenario a couple of times and ran it for 4 minutes, then checking what the Germans had. Then I ran it again for 6 minutes and ceased fire to check again what they had. It doesn't seem like they get any new on-map units, but it may be that they get new off-board artillery.

If the game then tries to load this new asset, but there's a problem with the data files, this might cause the crash.

The problems might be caused by mods, or by OOB changes since the scottish Coridor campaign was made.

Try disabling all your mods and see if the crash still happens.

If it does, try uninstalling the whole game completely, and then reinstalling it from the 4.0 master installer.

Thanks Bulletpoint. I am pretty sure I tried removing all mods when it first happened (many months ago) but I will try again and report back if it works.

Toward the end of the war a bit more. In January 1945 on the allied side there were six combat groups similar to light division or, if you prefer, resembling the old binary divisions pre armistice. Two infantry rgt, 1 arty rgt, 1 engineers btg. Something like 9000 troops each.

I am sure Italians were fighting with the Allies before this, read in Atkinson perhaps, they suffered quite heavy casualties.

    Another less elegant solution:

If it's an AP mine field, run some tracked vehicles through square. Each will take track damage but also detonate some of the mines. If you detonate enough mines, the signpost will change to green, showing it's now safe to enter.

I will keep that in mind. :o

Well, if you have an engineer, they can Mark Mines. Once in the minefield, (which is where they end up after doing that command), have them SLOW back out the same way they came. Unless you want them to provide buddy aid and possibly get the weapons. Otherwise, have the desired unit Slow into the action spot...following the same path that the engineers took. (I'm not sure that matters. But I'm not sure it doesn't.)

If no engineers, then toss a demo charge in there. You may lose the weapons, though.

If nothing else, find some volunteers. ;)

Ok, thanks for the detailed reply

Are you sure you did not command a penal battalion in a previous Life ?

Good old Stalin would have loved this kind entusiasm i'm sure ;)

Penal battalions, a new feature in proposed Red Thunder module (for the Soviets and the Nazi's)

I don't know the details of this campaign, but as a starting point, what version of CMBN are you running ? What modules/battle packs do you have installed and activated ? If you have version 4.0, did you use the 'full' 4.0 installer (which installs just about everything) or was this installed utilizing separate installers for each module/battle pack ?

Are you running this on a Mac or a PC ? Is this a laptop or a desktop ?  If it is a PC, then what version of Windows, what video card and what driver do you have installed ?

    PC, Windows 7.

V4.0 full installation. CMBN: have Commonwealth, Market Garden, Battle Pack and Vehicle Pack.

I essentially got rolled myself. Unfortunately the machine gun protecting my entire left flank got caught reloading and suffered a bunch of casualties, which then allowed close to a platoon of German infantry to pour over the ridge. Then, in the same minute the AT gun took too much direct fire and the crew abandoned the gun, effectively ending my ability to resist. Called it a cease fire there.

I'll likely give the scenario another go, but next time I'll use the player setup version and concoct my own defense.

Yeah, I managed a draw. I also lost the AT gun but had the MG and bazooka teams closer to the end.

I contemplated an earlier cease fire but held out a bit longer...and :o

Agreed. Units taking fire from across the street and then fleeing their building... into the street doesn't make much sense.

    I agree as well.

As far as infantry standing their ground, based on what I have experienced so far, they need to ratchet the fragility levels back a bit. This stands out when you are up against difficult odds. There are no last stands anymore. A fighting withdrawal turns into a disordered route. The player has less control compared to v3.

Currently reading "The Day of Battle" and that wetted my appetite to learn more about Salerno. The first link, is it for "Salerno to Cassino" - the official Army book? For some reason I can't access "history.army.mil" links any more but downloaded it a couple of years ago. Have it on a HD somewhare. Will look inte "Pen and Sword" books. Haven't read any of their titles but my impression from different forums is that they are generally of good quality.

I have the Ebook versions of the Pen & Sword book "Eighth Army in Italy 1943 – 45 The Long Hard Slog" as well as several others.

The Eighth Army book is quite good, reasonably detailed. As its the Eight Army its mainly about the British (and Canadians) so far. I am only a quarter of the way through. The only negative is the very limited and difficult to read maps (in the Ebook version and perhaps the paper version). You will need to look to other sources for that. Have no had a chance to get to the others yet.
