  1. CMx2 is getting pretty long in the tooth imo. It's getting harder and harder to be excited about new releases. It's pretty much to the point of oh wow, another title with the same recycled assets we've been seeing/hearing for nearly a decade, and the same engine/gameplay quirks we have to deal with. However, I don't think we'll see a CMx3 any time soon. I think we'll actually get to see DCS EDGE/Nevada released before we see a CMx3.

Excellent post Rambler, i totally agree with you.

You could get excited about CMBS a bit because it finally got back into modern warfare and had a current event as background) but now we are back to WW2 with the Bulge game which will feel/play just like CMBN,CMFI,CMRT.

No game changing new feature, the same recycled assets, 8 year old engine quirks and graphic issues...

    BFC, its getting old...

  2. first of all since CMAK isnt old breed. Old breed is Cmbo beta. like where i started. in Ww2 Wehrmacht terms Ive been there since Poland and you came in around just before Kursk.

If you really are an infantryman hopefully Germany will invade Russia again. Then we wont have to listen to you complain about CM, your squaddies can hear you complain about lugging ammo.

Oh wow, did not know you are that old school...iam sorry...

And no, Germany will not invade Russia again, i will stay here and tell you about stuff you refuse to hear.

CM has big flaws, face it and and stop acting like a hardcore fanboy so we can have a constructive discussion.

So if GTOS has infantry formations, Combat Mission does not, and you don't 'necessarily' think that GTOS infantry combat is superior then it stands to reason that the correlation you draw between infantry formations being necessary in Combat Mission in order to improve infantry combat isn't a valid one. Has the thought occurred to you that perhaps the reason infantry combat in GTOS isn't necessarily superior to infantry combat in Combat Mission is because of the infantry formations?

Sorry, if you dont see how infantry formation (correctly implemented) could enhance the CM gameplay then you clearly have a problem with your imagination.

Wouldn't that be ironic that the very game being promoted as 'superior' is a game that Steve refused to sell in his store.

No, it would just show that Steve refused to sell a great game or feared that it would outshine their own CM series someday.

    @ Kieme(ITA)

Sorry, i like you and your Mods but what you wrote about the FPS thing is trash. Lacroix is 100% correct !

If your PC is 3 or 4 times as powerful as the "Suggested" requirements and you still only get stuttering 25 FPS (with drops below 15 FPS) on big Maps then something is wrong.

If you can start ArmA3, load the biggest possible island and drink a coffee in the time it takes CM to load a medium-big scenario then something is wrong !

This game, lets face it, is just very poorly optimized, thats all !

Why are you defending BFC about that ? I cant understand it...

  3. That's easy to say when it's not your business's success that's on the line.

He has nothing to do with BFC except that he buys their games. Why should he have sleepless nights about their business's success ?

BFC has to have them, if they choose the wrong strategy they are done for, and i fear they are currently doing something wrong...

Their old fans will not always be here to buy their products and new ones are rarely interested in a badly performing 10 year old engine with fundamental flaws.

  4. So you would rate infantry combat in GTOS as superior to infantry combat in Combat Mission then?

    No, not necessarily.

So you are demanding that BFC get entirely out of the wargame business, go for the big bucks producing razzle-dazzle for fourteen year olds?

    What ?

Look, they as a commercial company try to make as much money as possible for the lowest amount of work/cost as possible.

I as a customer can demand that they invest more work/money into their games even if this means they make less profit.

They can choose to ignore me, i can choose to not buy their products.

But then again i hope they as a small team have dedication and love for their product, at least as much as all the ArmA modders for example that create all those models and textures for free in their freetime.

I mean as far as i know they already "use" community members for scenario and content creation.

  5. If you really can't play at 30 it's your problem.

No, its 100% a engine problem because of bad optimization.

    Does Germany still use conscription?

    No

Does GTOS have full FOW fighting positions that are deployable by the player in it?

    Yes

So GTOS has reinforced buildings that are deployable by the player too then?

    No

So GTOS has all of that does it? Pretty amazing game

It has infantry formations and a "Use Road" command.

Well as an "infantryman" (assuming anyone can put any credence to anything that you say) I expect you would know that the equipment is what the equipment is. If the game is set in 1944 the game will have equipment from 1944. That seems self evident to me.

I just think its cheap from BFC to always use the same year for their games (CMBN, CMRT, Bulge)...sure that helps them to recycle content and save work but i as a customer want something fresh, something truly "new" !

We cant have engine improvements because BFC has no time/money, fine. but at least give us some fresh scenarios and gear to play with (france'40 or the winter-war).

  6. I play CM since CMAK (CMx1) and played CMSF (Brits & Marines), CMBN, CMBS. I consider myself "old breed" because of that but my age is what separates me from the 40+ guys here.

Thats maybe the reason i have a different view of CM and how it should have evolved.

you ve said before you were an actual infantryman. which is it? 17 y.o in your parents basement or ex infantryman?

    That was a joke...

26 years old and active infantryman.

Ha, and if you wonder why i have so much time currently to post here...i got injured (knee) during a exercise last week. :D

  7. I would also prefer that hey 'finish' the CM2 series before they set about to design an entirely new game engine...

We need 41- 44, 44-45 russian front games...preferably also the early years and north africa...

As far as GTOS goes...I have not really played it...I found the UI to be....Uuuh....not very nice  B) ...Perhaps with a bit more time spent with that game things would have become more playable...but i put that game away ratrher quickly...With a dissapointment feeling...

I have watched all the youtube videos i can find about the upcomming game and i have to say that i'm not one bit impressed...when compared to CM...

The vehicles look very cartoony, they are very bright and shiny...seems more approporate for a moscow victory parade rather then having seen prolonged combat. The shadowing seems far inferior to CM...

Sorry but that tells me that you are a unconvincible CMx2 fanboy.

You are unable to accept the fact that "Mius Front" has some great features...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGv5QYmQT0c

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbvjgWqPBis

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPQA5-VWVXU

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eCET3VCztU

If you would have said that you wish CM had some of those features but still think CMx2 looks overall better or something i would accept that, but to say "i'm not one bit impressed...when compared to CM..." is just a joke.

Guys watch the videos and then think again, he said "i'm not one bit impressed...when compared to CM..." !

...and what just made me fall of my chair is that you said "The shadowing seems far inferior to CM..."...wow, shows me how abnormal your connection to CMx2 is.

Really, please stay realistic at least.

  8. oh yes cm optimisation. i must say one of the worst optimised games. 4.0ghz latest i5 and gtx 970 oced cant give me decent fps ,unless playing on fast models

If i had to name the one game that run the worst on my PC it would be CMx2 !

I play GTAV, ARMA3, GTOS all in high-max details Full HD !

And those loading times are killing me, big scenarios take about 4 minutes to load...thats incomprehensible.

Thats another thing, normally you would expect that after 8 years with the same engine it would be good optimized but CMBS runs much worse then SF !

  9. @ niall78

AAA titles are stuff like Call of Duty or GTA with over 100 Million dollar budget.

I think you dont need AAA budget to realize a CMx3 engine, look at what some Indie Devs are pulling off after a successful kickstarter campaign, why should that not work for BFC ?

    @ Stagler

I too think crowdfunding is the way to go for BFC if they want to realize a CMx3 engine

  10. But regarding your question, i didnt tell you what to suggest and what not - i asked you why you think your suggestions should be taken seriously.

Its up to BFC if they will take it seriously, most likely not but i dont care, its just what i think could work, sorry for not being the manager of a multi-millon dollar game company.

    I apologize for that...

    @ sandman2575

I dont agree with most of what you said, but again its not about GTOS.

But saying that "CM is superior on so many levels" is a bit daring...

  11. "I thought the same, then i discovered GTOS (the new Steam version) and was blown away !

By the way, there are dry hardcore wargames like "Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations" on Steam and i bet CM would outsell them every day !"

I only diddled around with GTOS, does it even have buildings?  I don't recall seeing any.  Infantry is an utter joke. Graphics are nice though.

It has building and "real" trenches (even fighting positions for armored vehicles !).

As i said above, you cant play the Inf like in CM because micro-managment is sanctioned...issue to many commands in a short time and they get confused and stop following your orders.

Command & Control is modeled in great detail, you really have to be careful and plan ahead.

But please, this thread is not about GTOS !

  12. GTOS is OK. Not a patch on CM. Infantry combat is woeful - which sucks for a WW2 title. Although it does have decent enough graphics.

Mhh, i actually would say GTOS is in many aspects superior to CMx2 although it has a bit of a different scale.

Infantry combat is not woeful, you just cant micro-manage your Inf like in CM. Make sure they move at the right time to the right position and everything is fine.

Graphics are not just "decent", they blow away CMx2 in every aspect, CM is not even the same league.

I bought it for $2.50 during the recent summer sale. I'd say the company who made it are making out like bandits on Steam.

    What should that mean ?

They have a great game with interesting scenarios, regulary add new features and fix bugs + its way cheaper then CM.

Paradox releases the same strategic level game again and again with a re-skin for different time periods.

Wow, thats actually the best description ever for CMx2 and BFC... ;)

Just replace "Paradox" with "BFC" and "strategic" with "tactical"...

  13. Hmmm... when they start their new Japanese anime erotica game engine I wonder if they'd bring me in to do the art. :P  B)

Please dont derail this thread, if you have a affection to Japanese anime erotica games, fine. But we are talking about CM here !

    Thanks !

Slow and steady has been winning the race since CMBO was released. Why risk it all now on a mad gamble?

Whats the risk from putting games on Steam on starting a kickstarter campaign ?

That some über-hardcore grogs will no longer buy your products because you have become mainstream ?

CM is still the only really high fidelity tactical combat simulator on the market

I thought the same, then i discovered GTOS (the new Steam version) and was blown away !

By the way, there are dry hardcore wargames like "Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations" on Steam and i bet CM would outsell them every day !

  14. Wiggum what' s your age and occupational background that you think you are qualified to tell others how to lead their company?

What' s your age and occupational background that you think you are qualified to tell others what kind of suggestions they can make and not make on a internet forum ?

Do you know the word "Gedankenspiel" ?

But if its a serious question:

Iam 17 and my occupational background is that i live in my parents basement...

  15. There are many possible ways to finance the creation of a new engine.

One would be to search for a Publisher like Paradox or Matrix Games.

Or use Kickstarter and look how much money you can collect.

I would go for this approach:

    1. Work on a concept for a CMx3 engine

    2. Release all the CMx2 games and modules on Steam (on a date like VE day or something), do a discount like 20% for the first few weeks...the popularity of CM will go through the roof !

    4. Make sure all those new CM players know about the Kickstarter campaign for CMx3

If you reach the goal and can actually build a CMx3 engine, great ! Maybe they can collect enough money to hire additional developers, artists.

    6. Do a Early Access to collect additional money while still in development

But i suspect BFC wants to play it as safe as possible and fears such a approach. They make enough money with CMx2 and know pretty well how much money they make with every "new" game and module.

Possible they can all carry on this way till they can retire and become full-time grandpas.

  16. There are so many misconceptions in the original post that it's pretty much a pointless origin for any rational discussion of the matter.

...the only misconception is that you think it would be pointless to discussion the matter.

Dont post here if you dont like the discussion !

  17. Hi !

CMSF is 8 years old now, technically i would say that we play the same game for 8 years now...

Its time to move to the next level of wargaming !

What do you think, when should BFC start to develop a CMx3 engine ?

What would be the features you want to see in it ?

Do you want it on Steam ?

Do you think a Kickstarter or Early-Access Model would work for BFC ?

    My most wanted features:

    - Reworked Infantry Simulation (Movement, Formations, Cover, Spotting) right now i think its pretty unrealistic

    - Better TacAI, especially for the enemy AI, more situational awareness and a kind of self preservation (better Panic behavior !)

    - More Commands like a "Use Road" or Road Movement command for Vehicles

    - Make suppression more effective

    - Finally enable the TacAI to use bridges

    - Reworked Building Model + special MOUT commands

    - Inf - Vehicle (Tank,IFV,APC) cooperation commands

    - Better simulation of Night Combat with Flares and a NVG View

    - Better Modeling of terrain, terrain deformation and real trenches and foxholes not that ugly things we have now (but still with FOW)

    - The Option to mark buildings as prepared for defense in the editor

    - Fighting Positions for Vehicles

    - Better Quick Battles, better automatic force selection

    - More options for the AI in the Editor, more trigger options and waypoints

    - SOP's for the action Phase like "Evade enemy fire" or "Area fire at suspected enemy positions" or "only engage enemy AFV's"

    - Better graphics with not such a comic look like in CMx2

    - No more "floating in green goo" map

    - Completely redone UI

    - Better optimization for Dual and Quad Core CPU's

    - Reduce loading times

    - Map overlay system

    - Actually show us the aircraft

    - Wet surfaces during rain

    - Build in Vehicle and Weapon Encyclopedia

    What do you think ?
