That's not going to end well...
C'mon! You must have seen James Caan in Bridge too Far? He made it! Anyone can!
-
Of course, I should have written Alt-Tab, but I'd not long had my tea.
@ John1966.... Yes, having something like that to refer to would be pretty good. Also, I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it yet, but taking a overview look at hedgerows from camera level 6 will show up the marked different in thickness between the different types.
Now that's a handy tip!

If it is possible to kneel behind it and not be seen, it is bocage. (It doesn't mean EVERY soldier will be hidden, only that it is possible for some to be hidden.) If every soldier can be seen while kneeling, it is a hedge.
At least, that's my rule of thumb.
This is sounding more and more like a Python sketch - How not to be seen
Good tip though.

Just yesterday I was looking at "Task Force Raff"—the original BN demo—and there is a stretch where all three types of foliage are on display in one short stretch. Seen in close comparison like that they are easily distinguishable. I know the problem for me sometimes is that only one type is in the vicinity and I have to think about which one I am dealing with and what its characteristics are.
Michael
My problem as well. Unless I have both of the shorter ones, I get uncertain of what I'm seeing. Which has in one battle caused me to move troops a fair distance only to realize...I can't hop over that!

I am not aware of anything resembling "a consistent method to fix". If I learn anything of value that can be passed on I will. I do not remember the resolution the time I had it happen to me - which probably means there was nothing I could have done to fix things.
Ah sorry, I misunderstood.
I am trying to find the map. I can't remember which one I used and it's slow going narrowing it down.
-
Hi Ian, I believe the map in question is from the game, but I'll double check the provenance when I'm home. I appreciate your offer to help.I may not be totally in the loop so I might be wrong with what I am about to say. I am not aware of any swapping issue that has not been resolved. I some how missed this thread - can't read everything. As far as I am aware each time a specific repeatable test case has been brought forward it has been fixed. If this is still happening I would be happy to help get it logged correctly.@WynnterGreen you said you have one or more maps that you see the problem. Could you send them to me (I'll PM you with my email). Could you please tell me step by step what you do to setup the QB that triggers it - no need for pictures but you can if you want. I will try to reproduce the problem and get back to you.@kohlenklau and @Bud_B same. Are you guys seeing this with the shipping QBs or something you created?
I take it that there is a consistent method to fix this issue then? Would be handy for budding map makers to know what it is to avoid making defective maps.
-
Short answer? No, you can't.
But I can.
What do you have?
Sorry to jump in here but I wondered if the QB attacker-defender reversal bug can be brought to their attention once more?
-
Yeah, it worked out in the end, but it's not the battle we intended to play. Is Battlefront aware of this issue? Have they given any indication if it can/will be looked into?Bud and I have been playing a few Attack QB's H2H and we also dialed down the points to 50% for a hybrid tiny battle.
Battle 1 the set ups were correct. I spent 582 and Bud spent 369.
Battle 2 the set ups were bugged. As soon as Bud told me, I renamed the outgoing email file and resent it to him.
I was supposed to be defender but we agreed I would spend all 738 to be the attacker.
Bud was supposed to attack but instead purchased as defender by getting 63% of my 738 points. He could spend 465.
63% is the attacker-defender ratio the game engine uses. At least for the battle sizes we play.
-
Frenchy, I'm so green spring leaves look dark compared to me. PM Sent.
-
I sent you a PM Bud. For tiny QB, I propose we use half of allotted points. 582 for attacker and 369 for defender....OK?
Got your msg and pm'd your back. In a word: yes.

There are a few things that you can try that will sometimes work.
Open up the map in the editor. Look at the setup zones and compare them to the Battle Type. Whichever side is set as the attacker in the Battle Type should have the attacker setup zone (the smaller one). In CMBN the Allies are set as the attacker by default in the stock QB maps.
Save the map, even if you have made no changes to it. I have been able to fix the bug simply by doing this, but it doesn't work all the time.
Switch who starts the game. Sometimes the bug happens when one player starts the game but not when the other starts it.
That's interesting, if a bit of a hassle. I'll have to experiment.

. Except on alternating Thursdays when you are wearing a blue tie in a month with the letter J!QB's new name, NSQB. Not So Quick Battle.Hey Bud, OK, you are on, let us play some CMBN QB's in this gentlemen's rules system. I will PM you tonight.Because I am mmm at wo..oork..now andd...I am...sup..posed ..to be uh,..working.
Work may pay the bills but it's otherwise highly overrated.
Do I need to wear a blue tie?

Never often play QB as H2H but trying to increase my PBEM's and enjoy the game more, so I just did my first and see the ugly bug. My force crafted for vicious defense now has to venture out to be the attacker. Gulp.Is there a way in use to trick the bug? Players agree to the trick attempt perhaps something like below?Player A: The QB dropdown says he is defender but knows he will be placed in the attack setup zone and purchases his max points allowed.Player B: The QB dropdown says he is attacker but he knows he will be the defender and only purchases on his honor X percentage of what defender gets.Or does everybody just use meeting engagements and that ALWAYS solves it? Sort of?Thanks.
I'd certainly find that a reasonable solution. Just like my proposal that for tiny maps that both players agree to spend a set amount of points rather than the much greater amounts afforded by the game.

I'm sure wet conditions affect all terrain, just like in real life. To what degree I don't know - like I said, they don't publish numbers on this. They only way we find out some of the inner workings of CM is to build a test scenario and run dozens of tests. For example, if you really want to know if hard ground is affected by rain, then make a blank map with nothing but hard tiles, add a bunch of Shermans, make the weather wet and rainy, and then run the test a bunch of times. You can then run the same test but with dry conditions and see if the results change much.
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm used to the work I did in SPWW2 and SPMBT where these effects were documented, I assumed that there would be more clarity for the CM series. Not debating if there should be, just assumed there was.

Wow, thanks, guys! That's a lot of useful info.
George MC, thank you for uploading those files, that's very kind.
Kohlenklau, your idea is helpful. I was going to resort to that if I really HAD to.
PAK40 - thank for giving me and idea where to look.

JonS, I wanted to say I really love your DAR. I put the PDF on my iPad before even considering using the editor simply for the pleasure of reading. You describe process and design analysis in an interesting way. I didn't immediately see the answers to my questions, but that's not for lack of appreciation for what you've done.

Hard terrain is always hard, muddy terrain is always muddy. Wet conditions may alter their characteristics a little so that a vehicle may have a slightly higher chance of getting mired, but I'm not sure how much. Rocky terrain I believe limits or prohibits vehicle movement and it may even provide more cover to prone infantry than normal open grass. There's no published hard data for many of these terrain modifiers.
Hmm. Ok. But I read somewhere that bogging chances increasewith a lot of rain. So, would that apply only to non hard/rocky terrain, is what's meant to ask.

P
So...the gaps are human sized? Ugh... I could have sworn I tried that and got a vehicle sized gap. Must have clicked something wrong. Thanks, fellas
-
Another question:
How do I control where the man-sized holes in hedgerows appear? I'd like one in one specific square but not another but it appears random.
-
My question is:
I've read about marsh and some specific terrains having effects, but not for all so:
Does hard or rocky terrain do sonething special compared to say, grass? Does it stay hard, and not become muddy when the conditions are rainy? I didn't see anything explained about this in the manual.
-
I looked around for a general thread of map design technique questions but didn't see one, so I hope this isn't a duplication of an existing resource.
The idea is to have a thread (perhaps if it's really Useful it could be stickied) where anyone can ask a question and get community replies on map-making.

Bud_B: I am not new to CMBN but I am to scenario design. I am looking forward to it
Darn, I'm always looking for some who won't totally slaughter me LOL

There was a wee PDF doing the rounds which showed you what was what. I'm, errr...at work right now but when I get home I'll dig it out and upload a copy.
Oh that would be awesome, thank you, please do!

George, I have a question for you. When I'm designing maps, and I want to add a building, I get (say I pick barns) a number of choices but I can't really tell what any of the tiny icons really represents. Some are bigger, others smaller, but between small icon x or y, I can't see a difference. How do I know what I'm putting down?

ChappyCanuck,
I have a Mac as well.
Some alternatives to Powerpoint:
Depending on when you bought your Mac you may have KeyNote, which is Apple's version of Powerpoint. Check it out in the Mac App Store. If you have to buy it it's $9.99. I've used it for presentations and it's not hard to use and can produce PDFs as well as Powerpoint files, in addition to the Keynote format.
An alternative to Photoshop that you can get for the Mac, as well as iPad, is Pixelmator. Simpler to use than Photoshop (which I use myself as a photographer). Again, take a look. Macworld has a review as well if you do a search.
If you have an iPad, like I do, you can take a look at Skitch (check the app store). I use it to mark up screenshots with text, arrows, circles around units, etc. Very handy. I'm showing a few of the features. It's quite easy to use. Here's an example:
