Immediacy, voice chat, streaming. It's an awful lot easier to discuss a particular tactical problem with people if you can show them directly and/or talk them through it. There's some advantages in activity as well.

There are advantages to every medium - Discord is a bad place to reference anything for the long term, but in many ways a forum isn't ideal for that either (a wiki would be the better option for sharing guides, relevant field manuals, training films, etc.). On the other hand, it's great for some immediate feedback - either in interacting with other people who play the thing, or in terms of things like testing and map design.

    Thanks domfluff!

I remembered I actually downloaded the Discord app for some reason a while ago, so I fired it up - but was unable to locate the Combat Mission group? What is it called?

@DownSized Welcome to the forum. These guys have pointed you in the right direction to pick up a game. Between here, TFGM and theblitz you'll come across plenty of people who've been playing the games for a while and are used to the time it takes to complete a PBEM battle.

I'm not chiming in about that though...... I'm chiming in about the new PBEM+++ system that is currently being tested for Cold War. Once it's up and working we can expect to start seeing it on other Combat Mission titles as well. One of the features of PBEM+++ is a lobby that has open PBEM games available (Challenges). These can either be public or private battles. The private battles are password protected. To play one of those the person who set up the Challenge would have to give you the password. The public Challenges are free for anyone to take. If you see a battle that you're interested you accept the Challenge and off you go. You won't even be asked what region you live in. 🙂

Will this PBEM+++ system be available for Mac users as well?

I'd like to address that the Combat Mission discord is probably the fasted growing community for Combat Mission, if not already the biggest. I insist that many of the forum members step off their high horse and try to understand the Discord isn't just a few immature children, but one of the most productive and diverse places that relate to the game. The BFC.com forum, while being an amazing resource, is becoming more and more obsolescent as time moves on. One would benefit from not settling on one means of discourse forever.

I have not used Discord. Can you please tell the advantage of Discord compared to a traditional forum like this? Is it anything more or anything else than a 'chat group'?

Regardless of claims, CM2 is not WYSIWYG.

    Who claims this? Battlefront?

I look at CM games as miniature wargaming - an abstraction that captures reality well on an abstract level, but not necessarily in every detail on zoom level 1. The latter had never been my expectation, and that has surely saved me a lot of frustration.

Yeah, it is weird and its been that way forever. Usually it's not a big deal but I suppose I have used it to know what kind and how much reinforcements are coming my way so it's not ideal.

I've been away from the game a couple of years so I must have forgotten!🙂

Interesting how something that for the layman sounds like it should be easy fixable apparently is not.

  6. I downloaded JRE today to try to get WhoseTurnIsIt to work (have used CM Helper in the past, but cannot get it to work with the newer titles) but unfortunately I run into a variant of the problem described above - nothing happens when I press 'No' or 'Yes' in the dialogue window and I cannot access the menues.

  7. There is some wonkiness with the spotting.

In the screenshot below, my infantry squad has just (about a second ago) spotted a Soviet truck 1634 metres away (just right of the NAI 5). The truck has not been spotted by any other unit previously. Nothing weird with that.

However, that my guys can also see that there are two infantry units inside the truck, can't be right. And not only that, they can see one of the two units is carrying an RPG-7. I do not get any details on the other unit. Playing on Iron.

This is a similar situation with the screenshot I posted earlier in this thread when I spotted Rocketman's M113 from approx. 1500 metres and was able to see that a Dragon equipped squat was sitting inside the buttoned down APC.

  8. I'm happy to report back six weeks later that CMCW runs incredibly well on my 2016 Macbook Pro. Currently running with 'Better' model and texture quality and large (2.5x2.5+ km) maps load rather quick and shows no lag when scrolling around the battlefield.

In a PBEM I'm playing I spotted an enemy vehicle approx. 1500m away. Playing on Elite. I was surprised to see an infantry icon above the buttoned down vehicle, and even more surprised when I clicked on it and the display shows 'Dragon ATGM'. This can't be right.

Well as this game is set in a conflict that never happened and it could possibly have involved Swedish involvement if there was Soviet incursions into Swedish territorial waters, land or airspace so why not? It's the reason 6mm Wargames miniatures are made for their kit.

Plus who wouldn't want to see S-Tanks, PBV's & IKV's in 'action' not to mention BILL atgm and they had lovely planes too!

The Whiskey on the Rocks incident in 1981 would be the perfect backstory - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_submarine_S-363 . 😎

  11. I have used CM Helper successfully in the past with older titles but are now trying to get it to work with CMCW. Is it possible? I have tried with both 1.7.5 and 1.7.6 versions. I can add CMCW as an install (using a custom name) but when trying to add a game, only CMFB and CMRT shows up as selectable options. I tried to trick the system by pointing the CMRT install to the CMCW exe but that did not work either.

Another good quality and rather lively mission is (I hope I can type it down right - "Mittelaschenbach sudden awakening").

    Nice screenshots.

Was that a H2H game or against the AI? The scenario looks interesting so I'm curious if it is balanced for H2H.

Edit: Same question goes for "The Grieshof Meet and Greet" above - may I guess you're playing the AI?

What I have picked up by playing SF2. Ground attack aircraft can spot AFV's independently but not infantry. Time your air units with operations on the ground. Backed up my scimitars with Apache Gunships which made a very effective recon. During an attack, helicopters take out enemy units inside buildings if engaged. Keep your units well outside the area you have nominated for your air-units. World War 2 I think we should have less control on company level and time it inside the first 15 minutes of a game. We can always make our own adaptions of the game at home.

    Thanks Chuck, that is helpful!

  14. Good to know, thanks!

AA: Any vehicles with AA mounts (machineguns, cannon) will stop any movement order (it'll show "Pause") and they will engage the aircraft (if able).

This is for WWII.  So, if your TCs are unbuttoned, you have a chance of shooting down the Jabos. ;)

For modern, dedicated anti-air assets will engage. (<- I'm not sure if they'll stop moving to do so, or, if they're moving if they can engage.)

Ah yes, they will stop moving in the modern titles as well. One thing I tend to do is put Anti-air assets on short target arcs, so that they won't waste their limited rounds on ground targets (unless I want them to). The short arcs have no effect on their ability to engage aircraft.
