  1. Tried out Hot Mustard & it does run slowly with the settings at their highest. My iMac is the 2.93GHz i7 with 1Gb Radeon HD 5750.

The problem with speed on the larger scenarios IIRC is that Apple optimizes OS X graphics for stability first & Windows graphics are optimized for speed. That said, since I prefer small to medium sized battles so the large battles speed is not a deal breaker for me.

  2. I'm running it on a 27" iMac which has a 2560x1440 screen resolution. While the UI text IS tiny, it's still readable even with my eyes (the SOBs are requiring larger & larger print size as they grow older), so I can say the CMx2 does support larger resolutions.

  3. Pretty cool. Anyone care to answer a question? Ill post the page later I dont remember it off the top of my head but it says that at battles near Caricano (sp?) the US troops encountered 'German 90mm SP guns' that they destroyed in a couple of engagements. What SP guns would this be referring to? I wasnt aware there was a 90mm assault gun in the German inventory?

Some of the stuff is pretty hairy when you read between the lines. ' A mark VI driven off with grenades..' etc.

What I suspect is being referenced is the Italian Semovente 90/53 in German service. While mostly used as SP Artillery on the mainland there was some direct combat use of them.

  4. Not sure if it's a bug or a problem with the system since in order to shoot the machingun the loader HAS to open the hatch to shoot it, so if you want to stop that from happening you need to give a very short fire arc, but that will keep the main gun from firing also. Hard to stop that from happening without a "don't fire machinegun" command...

  5. I'm a fan of the (discontinued) Microsoft Trackball Optical 1.0. I find the spacing of the (large) buttons to my liking, and its size allows my hand to rest comfortably for long periods.

I just did a look at the going price for them and it seems that they're going for $80+ (some sellers are asking over $350!).

  6. Also interesting, Jyri. Was your barrage aimed at the Stuarts or did it just happen to come down at the right time? In my game, I have all my mortars firing at other targets at the moment, and I fear that if I interrupt them to lay down fire on the Stuarts, the tanks will be gone before I get FFE - I am playing on Elite level, so mortar time to FFE is 4-7 minutes...

I was actually targeting the Stuarts. I used the heaviest mortars to fire at them, figuring that the Stuart's armour was light enough that a direct hit might kill it. Turned out I was right from the results. I also figured that if the Stuarts moved I could simply cancel the mission but once the Stuarts hit that spot they sat there long enough that they were still there when the barrage hit. I pkayed at Veteran so that might have made a difference.

More US infantry is seen in the vicinity of the bridge.

Interesting. When I played the scenario that's exactly where the Stuarts went. Until the mortar barrage hit. Then one was killed outright & the other immobilized so while it was still a threat I was able to knock it out by sending an "assassin" across the railroad bridge and sneaking up on it from the rear.

  8. I second that about emergency artillery. The last time I'll ever use it I was doing fairly well holding off an attack, but since the pressure on my troops was pretty heavy I used emergency instead of heavy. When the artillery hit it was devastating. To FRIENDLY troops. Enemy positions were unscathed. Emergency fire can simply go way too far off target to make it useable.

I wouldn't use it even if getting overrun.

  9. There's only one thing I can think of to add to ASL's advice. Defense is not simply "sit & wait for the attacker to attack", you have to also be attacking yourself. Simply sitting & waiting for attacks gives up the initiative to the attacker, so it's always good to have troops earmarked for attacks/counterattacks on the attacker. One good (unexpected) attack can, even if it fails, cause an attack to stall completely simply because now the attacker has to worry about defense himself. And if the attack goes perfectly, suddenly the attacker has a hole in HIS line to worry about which takes pressure off the rest of your line.

  10. Wait -- isn't Kampfgruppe an ersatz combined arms formation of multi-battalion size roughly analogous to the US "Task Force" . Combat Commands were permanent regiment-sized formations within certain US armoured divisions.

Kampfgruppe could be almost any size. They could go from reinforced company size to divison size (or greater sometimes). While by the end of the war they would be put together from (the remnants) of multiple units, for much of the war they were created by attachments within divisions as needed for the current mission. A good example is how a company's heavy weapons platoon was used in combat, it was led by the most junior Lieutenant in the company & the squads were attached the the other platoons as needed by tactical needs so in battle it was little more than an empty HQ. The anti-tank, pioneer & other specialist platoons in a division were used similarly. While they were officially under the direct command of the division HQ, in combat they were put under the command of whichever sub-unit of the division required those units for the mission.

  11. not really a grog, but it is the 1.SS "Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler"

Typo (unless Hitler had a love regiment). Should be Leibstandarte.

This is one my peeves. I've read articles in print where "lieb" is used and for anyone who knows German it just grates on you to see such a faux pas in the meaning of the name.

  12. I can verify that it is definitely possible. When closing in on some buildings I'll set different untis firing on each floor of multi-level buildings to suppress any defenders so that the assault squads will make it without taking too many losses. Sometimes the building is empty other times my assault squads enter the building without a loss and I'm sorry I wasted all that ammo I used for the covering fire but when I check out the building there's a bunch of dead enemy troops in the building, so. Apparantly ambushes don't always work as planned...
