The other thing I did notice is that it doesn't happen if you choose area fire. It only appeared to be a problem with Point fire.
I didn't have any problems with mortars completely missing their target area yet, I've only had mortars fire their first 3-5 rounds off map or even as close as 20 m away from said mortars. After that they switch to the correct target for me.
Also, it doesn't matter which type of fire I choose, be it point, area or line.

or i want to make my 2000th post real quick, or you guys just "dont get it".
i am sure you can find posts done by myself in the CMSF forums in a thread most similar to this one asking and puzzling why the new hunt command is in fact move to contact. it did not have any result.
What?
-
I already reported this a couple of days ago.
For me there's at last a 50% chance that mortars in a fire-mission, be it preliminary or during the battle, will lob their first 3-5 shells up to 180° away from the target and will then turn to do the "proper" fire-mission.
This mostly happens during preliminary fire-missions which are supposed to have perfect accuracy.

I've got the same problem with the right flank 57mm AT gun every time.
PSW rolls downhill, in plain sight, the 57mm doesn't spot it. After 3 minutes I simply decide to let it fire at the PSW by using area fire.
Second shot was a hit and even after the 57mm AT gun hit the PSW it didn't spot it. It immediately spotted the bailing crew though, which bailed after the a second penetration.

This fanatics dont need ammo, they will throw their K-rations at the enemy...
(Actually a good idea but will that keep them away from attacking ?)
Well, it will certainly minimise the damage they can do.
-
Well I for one have no problem still playing CMBB for large battles... anyone else who's interested PM me.
I would if it would still work on my machine.
-
Honestly, I've never had any problems with the US mortars on that map. I actually found them quite exposed and easy to kill since they're limited to a very tight space.
A wide spread of 105's on the town with one 81mm mortar providing smoke and one 81mm mortar suppressing the left flank did the job quite well for me.
-
I just did a really wide spread and pretty much annihilated all the German forces on the right side. Pushing up to phaseline red I encountered exactly 5 badly shaken soldiers.
-
this is just wording, to be flexible you need options and options add complexity.
I can't see how an option that dramatically simplifies controlling tanks adds complexity. Please explain.
-
I've had an human opponent throw his tank crews at me in "Closing the Pocket". They cleared the town of infantry and I had to capture the town again with my HMG's.
-
Of course this is all against the AI, with a real person those tanks could be put to much greater effect.
That's exactly the problem.
A human uses the tanks to a way greater effect than the AI, laying down loads of suppressive fire and smoke even if they can't see any contact yet.
I think that the US side could do with both batteries being reduced by one gun each and ammo being reduced accordingly.
-
more commands = complexity = no good for RT play.
That's not really true.
Having a proper hunt command would actually make the RT life far easier.
-
I have similar experiences.
Put both 105mm arty batteries on the right side, two 60mm mortars on the right side too and two 60mm mortars and the 81mm mortars on the farm area.

It is not my job to falsely reassure people.
That wasn't my intention or expectation.
I'm simply a bit scared about the feature (if at all) only being implemented in a later game like CM:Bulge. Because that would pretty much limit me to that.
-
Unknown. In general we do not patch in major features. However, nothing is written in stone either way.
Hmm, that's not really reassuring.
-
Thanks for the reply Steve!
Just one question, would the "sooner rather than later" mean that it would be patched into the game or would that mean it's being added via a module / new game?
-
Just edit your hotkeys.txt and you can assign any letter you want.
CMx2 has its own terminology for 5 years now.
-
Just as they should be.
Mortars were one of the prime killers in WW2, accounting for something along the lines of 70% of allied casualties in Normandy.
-
Why are you guys trying to turn CMBN into Starcraft in the first place?
What?
-
Also, I don't notice much effect from the damaged or knocked out optics?
Quite frankly, a damaged or knocked out optic wouldn't have much effect on ranges below 2-400m. The Zielschiene would be enough for that.
-
Wasn't there both a "hunt" and a "move to contact" command in CMx1?
Yup, I'd prefer that too.
-
I guess then I can scratch those potential invitees off the RoW tourney that hates playing by PBEM, as opinioned here.
Thanks, keeps my inbox free.
EDIT: It's not that I wouldn't be interested in ROW, I just won't participate if it's PBEM only.

I had a very similar thing today, Panther drove past a couple of houses, I send a fresh Sherman (100% ok, didn't even fire a shot yet) around and move it into the flank of the panther. The Sherman is approx. 100m away from the Panther and spots it.... and does nothing apart firing it's MG's at the Panther.
In the end the Sherman got a front turret penetration that killed the loader and injured three of the crew. I drove it around a second time (after sending a couple of infatrny in the open field so the panther would be pointing in a different direction again and the Sherman didn't fire again. It received a front upper hull penetration which killed the radio operator. After being hit it suddenly fired and killed the Panther in one shot.
Funny, that Sherman, with two men dead, with two MG's destroyed and optics/radio/tracks damaged knocked out two Marders and both Panthers!

3 shots isn't enough to determine anything. Without sampling a huge number of shots in stable conditions, nothing concrete can be determined, if indeed the accuracy at that range is even an issue.
Well, afaik the Kwk43 L/71 had a hit ratio of 99% (in testing) against a stationary 1x1m target at 1000m.
So I don't think the accuracy of the KwK42 L/70 would be lower than 90-95% at 1000m.
