  1. I was wondering if we had any tankers in our midst who could describe what crew members actually say during an engagement sequence. Also if anyone knows any good resources about tank crews or chatter, it would be much appreciated.
  2. I was thinking, a cool and useful feature could be added to the off map support in CMSF. Perhaps say that you know that an enemy mech company is going to travel through a small valley between two hills. You decide to call in an artillery strike, but by the time the rounds are done spotting, the enemy is gone. This prompts my question: Would it be possible to "load" artillery and CAS missions for your spotters at the beginning of the game, so that all you would have to do would be to say (for example) "fire at target alpha", and a accurate, pre-sighted fire mission would begin immediatly. (I remember that there was somthing along these lines in CMBO). I don't mean pre planned missions for the opening turn, like those you can set now, but you can allocate guns to certain pre-sighted areas and when needed, you can instantly call in accurate fire. Thanks
  3. It looks like you have birdstrike's Detailed Foliage Mod installed. If so, the numbers correspond to the density of trees, 1 being sparse, 3 being really dense.
  4. I have to admit, I really had a WTF moment . I was like: sh** my Apaches are strafing my tanks. Also, in the attack on nordburg (spelling srry), what constitutes capturing the bridgehead, because I thought I had secured both sides of the bridge, but after the ceasefire it says I had not.
  5. Just finished it, really enjoyed it good work. But um...yeah...way, way, way too much air support, after the twelfth CAS i got access to, I had nothing for my infantry to do!
  6. Combat is easily one of the most complicated experiences of the modern world. What a soldier can see, hear, and do depend on almost infinite factors, many of which cannot be modeled in a video game. A video game can only go so far. A computer, even with all its magical power, can only go so far. So yes, CMSF is not a perfect representation of real combat. It never will be, no matter how many patches BF puts out, no matter how many hours they spend working on the game, it is just that: a game. That being said, I think BF has done an AMAZING job at representing combat to the (almost) fullest extent possible short of being dropped in Iraq. So i guess I feel the bottom line is this: Syrian equipment does not need to be fixed, nor should it be, nor will it be, because is really isn't broken. YES a BMP-1 WILL spot slower than an M1, the same goes for a T-62 or 72. We are talking about 20 + year old hardware against the (arguably) best tank the world has ever seen. have you ever looked at the sights of a BMP1? The vehicle is practically blind when buttoned down. You could have a MBT sitting 40 feet off to the right, and honestly, the BMP probably wouldn't notice. And also surprisingly enough, that M1A2 Abrams, with its massive, loud jet turbine engine that is REALLY hard to miss seeing at 100 meters in the middle of the street, is really, really, really hard to spot when its 3000 meters away barely showing its turret over a small rise. So in short, we can all agree that Syrian equipment (in general) SUCKS! And they are facing the best equipped military in the world. The ability to see enemys in a BMP is much less than in a Bradley or Abrams. Its just the way it goes. Its the difference between a vehicle that costs several hundred-thousand dollars to one that costs several million. Yes, CMSF is not a perfect representation of combat. But only one thing is, or ever will be: actual combat. And yes, there are problems with the sighting and such in CMSF, however, to "fix" it, it has to be broken, and right now, it's just a little leaky.
  7. This question is twofold: During a campaign, if a vehicle is knocked out or abandoned, is it possible to recover it for use in the next mission? Does vehicle damage translate between missions. E.G. My M1's 120mm main gun was knocked out in the last mission, will it be unusable in the next one as well? Thanks
  8. Do the Syrians have some form of air support, because in the third mission, my tanks are getting strafed by a helicopter or something.
  9. Thanks for the imput guys. I watched Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers the other day, so that made me think about the popularity of helicopter insertion to hot LZs.
  10. So the use of helicopters as a means of directly inserting and removing troops from combat is almost exclusively used by the special forces?
  11. lol I really, really, really want to use Normal Dude's test Firing Ranges to pit Challenger IIs and M1A2s against each other!
  12. OK, this isn't strictly a game question, but what role does the transport helicopter play in modern warfare. I don't mean the obvious role of simply getting soldiers from point A to point B, but to what extent do modern military helicopters transport men under fire, land, dismount the troops, and take off again while providing covering fire with their weapons. I'll try to phrase my question more clearly: Do helicopters land troops (average ground ponders, excluding special forces) onto the battlefield under fire on the modern battlefield, much like the Airmobile divisions of the Vietnam War (think "We Were Soldiers")? On the CMSF battlefield, would troops be regularly ferried in and out of battle on helicopters? Any and all input would be appreciated.
  13. Welcome I had the same problem when I first started. CMSF is a very unforgiving game, and that turns alot of people off to it. Forget to put down supressing fire and that infantry squad can become a heaping pile of bleeding men. I don't know of any true "training" scenarios, but there are a few things I do (did) to understand the game better. The obvious one (sorry, it isn't much help), but just play as many scenarios as you can. Practice makes perfect, and you will quickly find out what works and what doesn't. Second, and this may seem over the top, but pick up some books on modern military tactics. CMSF is a true military simulation, and the real world tactics WILL work in the game. Sorry I can't be much more help than that, but good luck and have fun.
  14. i am awed by the amount of effort and time you have put into this (and all of your campaigns for that matter). I am really looking forward to this when its done.
  15. granted, I'm only on the third mission, but so far, I think that the campaign has a manageable difficulty level. However, if you make a stupid mistake or let your guard down, you will end up with a pile of bleeding soldiers and a couple of burning IFVs. The fact that you gave us the full possible amount of time to play the scenario allows the player to take it really, really slow, as to avoid those kind of mistakes.
  16. I was wondering whether or not smoke rounds for off-map support counts towards its total ammunition, or whether it is kept seperate. For example, if i constantly use the same group of mortars to provide a smoke screen, will they also run out of normal shells, or will they eventually run out of smoke shells and only be able to fire normal shells?
  17. Yeah, thats the same problem I've been having. T-90s ripping my M1A2s apart at ranges alot farther than 400meters. I wanted to test the capibilities of the T-90. This wasn't what I expected....
  18. No they were not hull down, they were just sitting out in the open. I retried my tests, and the same thing happened. It took an astounding 13 rounds (4 ATGM, 9 APFSDS) to achieve an M-Kill, and 21 (4 ATGM, 12 APFSDS, 5 T-HEAT) total to knock out the tank at 400 meters! Basically everything but the smoke launcher and two machine guns were inoperable. Added to that, the whole crew survived! I'm fairly sure there is somthing wrong with the game engine at this point, because I'm certain that a top of the line MBT armed with a 125mm gun could penetrate an M1's armor in one shot (at least at 400 meters).
  19. T-90SA I have been having lots of trouble with the T-90s in Gerorge MC's Forging Steel Campaign, so I decided to test their capabilities against M1A2 SEP Abrams using Normal Dude's Vehicle Test Range. I used 2 T-90s, one firing at targets between 400 and 1000 meters, at 200 meter intervals, and the other firing at targets between 1200 and 1800 meters. All the M1A2 SEP Abrams were pointing their frontal armor at the T-90s. What I found was quite surprising. I will split this up between the two T-90s. -Close Range (400m-1000m) After 7 (seven) minutes of continuous firing at a single M1 (at 400m), using both the AT-11 ATGM and the 125mm APFSDS round, the T-90 only scored an M-Kill and a single crew casualty! It completely depleted its AT-11 ammo and some of its APFSDS ammo. It took an additional 12 (yeah, 12!) APFSDS rounds to knock out the M1! AT 400 METERS! I am seriously considering the possibility that this is a glitch. At 600 meters, only one out of three rounds hit the target, producing light damage to its sights. Both the 800 and 1000 meter targets were consistently missed my multiple rounds. From this test, it would seem that the T-90 is an incompetent killing machine, however I know firsthand that M1s can be taken out with only 1 or 2 rounds at over 1000 meters. I was hoping that someone could try this test as well to see if it corroborates my results. -Long Range (1200m- 1800m) I will report back on this one later, because after only 3 shots with AT-11 (all misses at 1200m), one of the M1s got pissed off and disobeyed its target arc command and fired a single APFSDS round into the T-90, which consequently brewed up. I was wondering what you guys thought was up with this test, because that many hits should have easily destroyed almost any tank. Period.
  20. I made yet another stupid tactical blunder.... -------------------------------SPOILERS----------------------------------------------- I neglected to look at the tactical map of the mission where you attack the town and try to take the bridge (sorry, forgot the name). I happily positioned my tanks on the small rise to the southwest. Suddenly, to my astonished eyes, appeared a few T-90s and some BMPs that blasted my helpless tanks and masacred everyone in the small staging area I had set up on the reverse of the hill, which included a couple of Brads and some Infantry. Naturally, I was very angry, so I grumbled my way into the breifing, where I saw the HUGE red arrow sweeping in from the southwest that was labled: T-90s. Oh well, I guess its a lesson to learn... Still having wicked fun though, great job George.
  21. try using WinRar and and make sure that it's a (.bat) file sorry I cant be of more help, otherwise just try the download again
  22. from what I have gathered, the study of modern military tactics does help alot. For example, someone who has never looked into modern military doctrines and tactics would have no concept of bounding overwatch or suppressing fire, both of witch are vital to achieve victory. That being said, whether or not you can make a 6 inch group at 200 yards with an M4 probably won't help you take out that pixilated T-90 thats been blasting your Bradley's in CMSF.
  23. arrrrrg! this is the most enjoyable CMSF game I have ever played that has left me so frustrated. I am 1 hour into the 2nd mission, and I have 6 (yeah six) immobilized Brads from becoming bogged. I have lost 2 full squads, and a full team, and both of my 120mm mortars are empty. Not really sure what to do, because without their rides, the infantry is going to have a hard time humping it over such long distances and without supressing fire from the Bushmasters or artillery. >.< I'm gonna finish and then try again.
