  1. It sure is. Welcome back dude.
  2. The secret to effective ion fire is to hit the same spot over and over again. With 4 bot ions as compared to 1 human ion, the bot ions make up for their lack of accuracy with sheer ion power. With 2 human ions, you're right. The fire becomes far better because the armor is now being burned through at 2 time the original rate. In your 3 ion/Tempest scenario, I suspect the Tempests still wouldn't be the best choice. Hovercraft are sensitive to terrain, meaning on Ice Field I can hit 200 m/s in a Hurricane. It can also mean making 50 m/s at best on most maps with the same vehicle. If there were 3 human controlled Tempests on our ion battery position at Dead Gulch today, the players would have to worry about plunging off the edge of the cliff if they got too focused on their targets. They would have to get close to the edge as they could because of their low profile, and lock brakes, possibly exposing themselves on the edge of the cliff to gunfire low enough to sneak past the ion tower. If you had 3 human controlled ion Thors there, you would dominate the battlefield, nothing that you could see would survive for more than a few seconds. Finally, I remember something, the second-to-last time I saw a Tempest online was in February, when this newb named WingTips used it on a failed flag run on Haven. You should remember some of it Kim, because you were with him, against me and another player I've forgotten. The real last time I saw a Tempest online was in September, when I used it for scouting out Jung's forces while defending Raid, just for a change. I found out that it wasn't the best unit, given that everyone else could damage me at will. But I didn't get killed, and was able to extract it.
  3. I admit, I am rather good, and my bot wrangling skills are starting to come back to me! If any newbs need a lesson in how to play, look to me and jby, as I think we're the best players currently playing. Believe it or not, there were players that were even better than me. Jung said in a post that Nexus and yurch were the only people who scared him, and that jby was the only person he needs to be careful to beat. But in case you're worried about my qualifications, he also admitted that the only time recently he could remember being beaten in 1v1 was by me. So, in the unlikely event that a swarm of newbs comes on DP and want a battle, I'll hold Herra Junction on Raid against them all. P.S. I'm a he. P.S.S. I don't IM, and I don't intend too. (I have a life outside of the Internet, and after seeing what happens to people my age if you don't, I'm glad I do!) But I do agree that we need to get more new players, and we should get them some practice before they face the big shots on Sunday and Wednesday. Say, we could make Wednesday the time when newbs can play! And on any other day, when the newbs come along and need guidance, turn them over to... DRILL SERGEANTS KIM AND 152!!!!!! ^^
  4. Update: Kim's on right now, for anyone who wants to know. I had 2 great co-op battles with him. Update 2: He's done now.
  5. Good idea Kim, but I've got another idea, based on yours. When we get new players, the first thing we will do, after meeting them and showing them some moves on the forums, is direct them to Drill Sergeant Kim! They can play with you at the times you listed, while you teach them and get them ready for the Sunday and Wednesday battles. Speaking of the Wednesday battles, we haven't had any recently, because missinginreality's been busy with other things.
  6. Yes, it would be, but that's chess. It certainly is possible to sacrifice a number of units for use in a diversion, but Thors and Hermes would not be the best units to do so. Remember, you only get 8 Hermes, and 8-10 Thors. If you were sacrificing units for a diversion, try Shrikes, Paladins, and one other unit, the Tempest. (The Tempest, because it has virtually no use outside of scouting, and any player would want a Paladin so they don't have to stand in one place for a long time.) Use the Hermes, Thors, and Apollos for the knockout blow while your opponent is distracted. Of course, I'm only speaking theoretically, because no one I know of has ever tried it and the closest thing I've seen to it is Jung's Paladin sweeps, which are another maneuver altogether.
  7. Relax, I'm no Mac fanatic. I think that Mac and Windows (Vista included) have their strong points. I also have a vendetta against Steve Jobs for almost knocking my mom down when he was being sued by Apple. The reason I went for the slightly faster model was to get 2 GB ram instead of 1, a Radeon 2600 XT with 256mb instead of a Radeon 2400 Pro with 128mb. The extra 266 MHz was just a bonus. Think you could make it this Sunday? The summer hiatus ended last Sunday with a 5 player blowout involving me, jby, kim2, Phonan, and Stonewall. Jung won't be around for some time, because he's having another baby and is moving.
  8. Uh, Jung, are you drunk right now? Because if you were sober, I think I'd see some quotes from me in those blank spaces. (Odds are you aren't drunk, given you're moving) No offense to you if you aren't. On an unrelated note, is anyone coming tonight?
  9. I finally got DT onto my new iMac! With a 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, Radeon 2600 XT 256MB, I was able to get 50-55 fps playing Sea Cliffs at 1280x800 4xAA and everything except high def rendering and high def texturing (both kept giving the buildings a weird green shimmer). But still, I also now have a Razer DeathAdder Lunar White Mac edition gaming mouse and Razer gaming mousepad to go with it! Fear me, all vets and rookies!
  10. Not from the sides they can't. I'd correct your statement to say, "since they are the only units that can survive HEAT from the front". Your best bet when facing a Thor, if you have no ATGM units, is to wait for it to get closer, then maneuver to hit it in the side if you have HEAT, or if you have AP, shoot it through the track. My final word is this: I wasn't commanding on Recon In Force. I don't know if I could have done a better job, but I still wasn't commanding. I'm not intending to be defensive, I'm just saying what happened.
  11. LOL, that's funny, because I'm the one who has trouble with the start-up plan and comes up with a better idea during the evolution halfway! I think you should have kept landing Thor KC-H, but also should have landed more Apollo KC-H, and moved the drop zone, most likely E. KC-H, because of its high velocity, is the best chance you have of getting through a ion tower. Still, either get close, or overwhelm the tower with a storm of 20mm fire. As for Stonewall's rear raiding, he does that as a defensive tactic when he plays as Blood, and it's quite effective at that! Bot controlled ion fire is just a mockery, IMO, of a ion battery. Their accuracy is horrible and the target would have to sit still for a long time to get killed. 2 or more human controlled ion tanks can destroy a battlefield, as you and I learned the last time we played on Dead Gulch. One last thing: It's easy to get shooting skills back. It's not easy to get bot-wrangling skills back! Edit for more content: I'm always ready for a funny story. Could you post them here so we could all hear them? BTW, I put the tag "neurotic" on you because you always needed a Hermes with your formations. (Note: the tag isn't meant to be negative in any way ) I thought it was odd. You still keep a Hermes with you, as I noticed on House to House. At least it isn't as necessary as it used to be. Beware, though: The Hermes' AA/point defense gun, which delivers us from mortars, Hurricanes, enemy dropships, enemy Galaxies, and AT grenades, does have a blind spot, right in front of the vehicle. It is here that AT grenades can penetrate, and Hurricane shells can get through. Edit 2: Almost forgot, who were you playing with on that round where you snarfed EWVs? Jung? I'm waiting for a good story.
  12. Re: Recon In Force-Don't let kim2 take command. Defer that to Stonewall. House to House was so close, I thought we'd won. Blood won 1991-1962. My aim was as good as always (barring my traditional shakiness at CQB), and it was great to break the hiatus. Primo Victoria! I hope it never dies, and that DT2 comes out soon. I'll email Clay about it tonight.
  13. Whoa. 8-)) With that in mind, I'm planning for 1280x1024 with 4xAA. Thanks.
  14. Oh. Just wanted to make sure. BTW, what resolutions and quality settings can you run DT on now? Just curious, so I'll know what to shoot for if I get DT on my new iMac. On another note, this is my 300th post. Yippie!
  15. Cya! I got a new iMac a couple of weeks ago. If I can, I'll see about getting DT on it sometime this week. If I can, 1024x768, 4xAA, terrain and view distance max, and all settings turned on, here I come!
  16. If you can make it, so can I. It'll be great to battle again!
  17. Dang, I didn't show up because I thought the hiatus was still on! Anyone coming this Sunday?
  18. Just 1 question: How much longer before we can battle again?
  19. So that's where you were. Hope to see you on Sunday.
  20. I've never hit the LAN party scene (Hey, I need sleep too! ). But there have been DropTeam LAN gamers, like Schturm, who have shown up online. (How I wish he'd come back, and bring his friends with him!) Dedicated Thor mortars? I use them pretty often, and you should have been around when Jung clobbered us on Forsaken with a 6 Thor mortar barrage. Hope you get your apartment soon, so I can have some fun with you. With fall falling (haha), we should see a return of players, and more glorious battles. (Provided kim2 doesn't anger Jung again.) You think you're young? Check my profile.
  21. Just wanted to let you know, I've sent an e-mail to Clay asking about the progress of DT 2.
  22. Oh yeah. Forsaken: Jung was right, my joining him on defense was unbalanced. But it did save the base from death by mortar, and the craters made great hiding places. Ice Field: I've got to stop being complacent. From now on, I'll keep AA up no matter what, do more bot wrangling instead of wandering out to shoot up Jung's rear, and maybe more than 1 infantry squad ready. When I killed Jung's grunt with my assault rifle to the knee, I should have said, "Boom knee shot!" Also, I should have extracted a few of kim2's turrets in the deployment phase. He had those turrets all over the place, and not all of them were necessary. I can't fault ourselves elsewhere, though. We had mines in some good places, and didn't neglect sensors.
  23. I know. Playing DropTeam on a 384k cable connection rocks, which is why I know. Welcome back. I'm relatively new, having been playing online since this February. A lot of new people have shown up. Here are some: Kim Bruning[kim2] Rather good, but a bit stubborn and neurotic. missinginreality[MiR] A pretty good player, and he's coming up with some good ideas. OverHead He's been on and off for some time. Learned how to chat Sunday. Is getting quite good. Aniruddha[ZenGentoo] A new player, who's still learning. Haven't seen him recently. And then of course there's me. I'm a good tactician, can put a 120mm HEAT round on target from 6000 meters, and have some good tricks involving infantry. How long before you can join us? It'd be great to have another vet to blow up. And just out of curiosity, how much longer do I have to play before I become a vet? They're working on DT 2, info leaked by Clay to your truly a while ago. I'll ask him for a release date, if I have the opportunity.
