  1. Perhaps no free lunch, but look at the bright side---if it gets even slower you can go HAVE lunch wyw
  2. I am running a 128 card, but lower spec than what the requirements state (I have 6600GT). No performance issues whatsoever, and I can still crank up the settings to the highest notch (except resolution, which has to be one less than the best possible---which is still very good). But as was said by someone else; if the demo runs for you, then the game will
  3. This sounds like it could be a good solution to introduce some additional drama and uncertainty into the gameplay. Nothing is more embarrassing than taking a knife to a gunfight, right?
  4. It's too bad there is no way to introduce an air search function. A big part of the actual battle (and of some excellent games years ago) is the searching for enemy task forces. I remember an SSI game for the PC (was it Carriers at War?) where the Midway and Coral Sea scenarios included PBY's searching, searching, searching...and it was actually quite a thrill when you eventually got a sighting. Is there any way to implement this in the Midway scenario?
  5. This would be a lot of trouble for the Japanese to go to, just to eliminate a general of dubious value (speaking of the historical record, not his value in the game) . We are talking about the guy who thought parking aircraft wingtip-to-wingtip was a good way to discourage saboteurs. Anyway, all joking aside, it seems reasonable that he would move to Australia regardless. The Philippines is a bit exposed, and even if the Japanese had bypassed the Philippines, Roosevelt would probably have wanted the American theatre HQ to be in Australia
  6. I think he's referring to the fact that as Japan, he did not attack the Philippines. So then why would MacArthur leave? Did he hear glory calling his name, somewhere else?
  7. Fantastic game! Best Pacific theatre experience since Grigsby's "Pacific War" circa 1992. Which I still have on the shelf, and which runs under XP just fine. One of my old friends on the west coast, who also contributes to this forum (DGold) and I used to play Pacific War by email, and now plan to give your game a try as a PBEM experience. Based upon what I have seen thus far, I am sure we will have a great time
  8. With regard to the elicense failure, I am happy to say that my misgivings about Battlefront were misplaced. Hubert was on line with me well after midnight his time (and mine), trying to help. As per his prediction, Martin (in Germany) fixed this problem while I was still dreaming of SBD's, TBD's, and Wildcats. But, this failure points up the validity of Silent Kipper's question.
  9. Actually, this is a very good question. While it is unlikely that Battlefront would go "bust", when turning out such good products, anything is possible. Look at GM (oops, wait a minute, they stopped making good products some time ago for the most part). Of course, some clever little devil will figure out a crack in such a case, right?
  10. It may just be a traffic issue. I had no problem with downloading the demo, and subsequently the full version. I do have a problem with the elicense, but that is not germaine to your issue. I would try again from the server closest to your locale. Based upon the demo, I would not give it a miss if I were you. I have been a wargamer for many, many years and this game reminds me of the glorious SSI game "Pacific War". It does not have the look, but it sure has the feel. Once I get my licensing issue resolved, I am sure that this game will suck up far too much of my time, but having a social life is over-rated anyway, right ?
  11. Thanks for the reassurance. It is a bit annoying when you pay for something, have some free time on a cold snowy evening to use it, and then find that the flipping licensing procedure doesn't seem to work. I have checked everything on my system (admin privileges, e-license control panel, etc) and find nothing amiss. It's midnight where I am (Atlantic Canada); where is Battlefront? UK? Btw, I did also email to the contact address you mentioned.
  12. I notice that some time back, a fellow who did NOT buy a Battlefront product griped about the elicensing system. Well, I am someone who DID just buy both the download and CD version of Pacific Theatre. Here I sit, an hour and a half after having downloaded it, unable to play the bloody thing. I keep getting a 501 error, which implies that either I am an idiot unable to do a simple cut and paste, or that perhaps my license number isn't yet registered in the database. Since I'm reasonably sure I'm not an idiot and can in fact master basic computer commands, then I have to assume the license number isn't registered at the Battlefront end. WTF? I paid with PayPal, Battlefront has my money, so what's the problem? If a company wants to use an elicense system (reasonable enough, I suppose), it should at least work seamlessly and with ease. After having played the demo for a couple of hours, I am duly impressed and would like to play this game. If I can't play the download and have to wait for the disk, then I am wondering why I paid extra. Wonder how long before THIS thread gets locked?
  13. Big Al, I'm trying out your "Brute Force" Mod, which I just downloaded today, and am playing as Allies. A curious thing in turn one---the Kriegsmarine deploy a cruiser to the English Channel and a DD well out into the North Sea. Is this intentional? It's a bit of a gift to the Allies... Also, at the end of the German phase of turn one, a message that Russia is considering war because the Japanese have neglected Manchurian defenses. Is this to simulate the historical border clash between Japan and Russia in '39? Overall, this looks like it will be great, even if the AI has a couple of kinks. No doubt those will be straightened out.
  14. Totally agree! There must be Marines and SNFL units, who can attack occupied tiles. There simply isn't enough information yet from the developer, but the screen shots look nice.
  15. I never thought that I would see the day when a game would have too much detail for me, but WitP managed that feat. Even now that I'm retired, I don't think there are enough hours in a day to devote to that game. For me, the gold standard of computer simulations of WW2 in the Pacific is still SSI's "Pacific War". The AI was no screaming hell, but it was a blast as a PBEM game. Hopefully Battlefront gives us something that approaches that experience with this new project.
  16. Honch: I just downloaded your very interesting looking mod, and extracted it. It does not seem to create a "cgn" file (I was expecting it to create something along the lines of "1939 Fall Weiss-Honch.cgn". I'm guessing that when you did version two, you assumed that downloaders would have version one, and maybe the cgn file was with that? Anyway, if you can upload the cgn file to cmmmods that would be awesome. Thanks
