Another one of those cool moments
travcrouse replied to Mord's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
Cool Moment: Occasionally, a Brit 51mm mortar makes a spectacular shot - putting an HE round right on top of an RPG or ATGM team... Priceless... -
In CMSF, could General Purpose rounds from mortars and/or artillery be used to clear out a suspected minefield? A scenario briefing tells me that the only crossing for a wadi is mined. Its a small area, and I thought about calling in a heavy linear 155mm GP mission to detonate the suspected mines... Before I waste the precious ammo, anyone know if this will work? MICLIC workaround ;^P

I figured REAL LIFE had interfered with his modding efforts... -

I see what you mean. Fired up a couple Brit scenarios with my ghetto solution. So far, snipers, Spartans, and the MGL's are out of whack. I don't have Photoshop so I'm stuck in the ghetto. -

Just tried the procedure above. Looks good except for snipers... -

As of now I've just put his icon folder in my z folder, fired-up a Brit scenario to see the results and then took the folder back out. I'm very leery of messing with anything but the contents of his icon folder (don't know a thing about alpha channel editing). Forgive my simple-mindedness, but I was thinking that I could just copy, for example, 'icon usa blue ifv 2.bmp' and rename the copy 'icon british blue ifv 2.bmp'. It sounds like you are saying this is possible (?) -

I'm unemployed these days and can volunteer time to get this mod up to UK standards.. I put the transparent icons into my Z folder and found that some of the transparent ones show up but the majority remain stock. Is it a matter of just changing filenames or does it require additional software? -

Split squad mounted in two vehicles

I remember seeing an instance of this bug back in CMSF:Marines. It happened in a scenario that I had edited by replacing the US Army units with equivalent USMC units. I chalked the phenomenon up to something to do with my OoB tinkering... -

How's progress? Really miss these icons! -

What's a 'toff'? I've heard the word in movies but couldn't figure out if its a good or bad thing...
-
I've caught myself doing that as well. If I'm talking to the 'worker bees' out in the workshop I let my 'redneck' accent loose, but if I'm talking to the engineers propriety overrules upbringing...
-
I'm a linguist geek. Searching now...
-
I feel like a redneck. 'Fargo' is one of my favorite movies.
-
I knew I shouldn't have made a blanket generalization like that... I guess it all depends on education and family background that determines how distinctively your regional accent is manifested. Back when I was in the Navy, my squadron had an old salty Command Master Chief from Wisconsin. He spoke exactly like the characters in 'Fargo' (to my Okie ears). This guy was a big burly lumberjack of a man and it was obvious that his parents weren't bankers or lawyers. Concurrently we had officers from the same region who 'suppressed' their native dialect, making it difficult to figure out where they were from. I didn't mean to offend anyone...
-
I grew up in Oklahoma. We were right on the 'border' between the North Midland, South Midland and Ozark dialect regions. Depending on the speaker's education and socio-economic background, I can tell someone is from western Arkansas instantly. To me there's a noticeable difference between someone from Georgia or Florida and someone from northern Mississippi or western Tennessee. A southern Louisiana accent is unmistakeable. My 'favorite' American accent is Upper Midwestern (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Dakotas). The movie "Fargo" is a showcase for that dialect... As an aside, I recently found a book at the library that goes into great depth on the various dialects of the UK. It even inlcuded a CD with recordings of various speakers from around the country to help learn to recognize the subtle and not so subtle differences between the dialects.

Where is my foilage!

Many have been the times that I have been hopped-up on the Guinness and played half a scenario with the trees or the smoke toggled-off... -

Trees might be toggled-off Try <Alt-T> -
The map for "UK Battlegroup Attacks!" is a beauty as well... I'm about 45 minutes into the scenario and have seen a couple of Challengers make jaw-dropping one-mile-plus shots across the valley... The terrain reminds me of the Little Bighorn battlefield in Montana: sweeping vistas of prairie cut up with nasty little gullies and draws... Awesome.

We don't need no stinking read-me!!! LOL Thanks for the mod...

Angryson, Grenade launchers are fixed but seems the all rifle squads have had their 'infantry' icon replaced with 'machine gun'...
-
It's a privelege to talk to someone who has done this stuff in real life. I worked on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier while in the Navy and managed to get blown around by those beasts on more than one occasion! It's amazing how large and powerful they are. A couple of other scenarios that I thought would be ideal for modding into air assault type battles would be Green Zone and Mujahideen Valley. By the way, Happy 4th of July to everyone! A million thanks to everyone in uniform.

I figured the Marines could and would bring everything but the kitchen sink, but because I wasn't sure of the composition of the Red force I didn't want to make the mission too easy for Blue... You guys have made me want to go back and tinker some more with this scenario...
