  1. I think it is ironic that this particular story made it into the news the same week AFRICACOM goes on line. Not only that but they are replacing the European commands Trans-Sahara counter terrorism initiative in the area. Some sources are saying that we are becoming a presence along the African coastline most likely due to China and India's ambitions in Africa. Coincidence, I think not.

  2. "i bought my game on sunday, and after i won a total victory through syrian surrender in campain mission 1, mission 2 was still "empty". i thouhgt that was changed?

i guess i dont need to DL the fix for it as the campaiin continues as normal past mission 2 even with the "old" file?"

That has been fixed apparently and can be downloaded from BF.

  3. I totally use the pause function. I play veteran for that reason. I don't really see a huge difference between veteran and elite, other than that pause function. Unless you are doing a small scenario, you have to use the pause button unless you are an RTS king, which most of us aren't or we would be playing RTS's not a tactical game like this. I have recently went back to WEGO because I am playing a lot of PBEM games. So it improves my skill as a PBEM player. You have to think very differently in a WEGO game. Maybe one day there will be a quarterly of halftime break in each minute to make adjustments. We can only wish.

  4. Nice work for sure, I just feel alot of these mods really don't add a ton more to the game. I had a Euro folder filled with mods and something was corrupt I suppose and my game would crash to desktop. As long as those mods aren't in the Z folder I am fine. I went mod crazy and now I am pulling back and just playing the stock game with those Mod that I know work.

  5. cabal123,

And since when are the secret messages coming across the teletypes and military communications inherently reliable? Or the truth?:D

I don't have any Gulf of Aden stories but here's one on secret military reports: During the recent Russo-Georgian war more than one western military attache gathered information by interviewing garden-variety news reporters that had been places he hadn't, this because basically the military attaches' bosses were more worried about their people getting hurt, than the reporters' bosses.

So what the reporters told the military attaches became secret intelligence transmitted by super-codes back to the home country where the big cheeses could read it and feel cool because of their great security clearances, while the reporters just filed their stories and photographs.

Intelligence is only as good as the source, and how good the source is at getting the information you want to know. Making it secret doesn't make it better. Sometimes the government has better information than the media. Sometimes it doesn't.

Moving right along, here's the latest multiple-source suitable for the hoi polloi, it seems the pirates know all about fighting over booty. Maybe they'll bury their hostages on an island and make a treasure map, we can only hope!

Official: Three Somali pirates shot dead in tank ship feud

Eds: Includes confirmation by NGO official =

Nairobi/Kiev (dpa) - The presence of international warships has

provoked a gunbattle that led to three Somali pirates being shot dead

aboard a hijacked Ukrainian cargo ship carrying tanks, a maritime

    official said Tuesday.

"There was a shootout because of a misunderstanding between the

gunmen," Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers‘ Assistance

    Programme told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

"They are paranoid about the presence of (international)

warships," said Mwangura, whose Kenya-based organization monitors

    acts of piracy off Somalia.

"Some of them want to bail out or abandon the mission and others

are ready to continue," he added.

None of the 20 crewmembers being held along with the ship were

believed to have been injured in the fighting.

The MV Faina, along with its cargo of 33 T-72 tanks, armoured

personnel carriers and munitions, was seized late Thursday as it

headed for the Kenyan port of Mombasa.

The ship, with an estimated 50 pirates onboard, is now surrounded

by warships at its anchorage point off the Somali coast near the port

    of Hobyo.

Lieutenant Nathan Christensen, deputy spokesman for the US Navy‘s

fifth fleet, said that three warships, amongst them the USS Howard,

were maintaining visual contact and that there were no plans to

launch an assault on the hijacked vessel.

One of the other ships is believed to be Russian and the identity

of the third is unknown. A US helicopter gunship is also monitoring

    the pirates.

The major response is due to fears that the military cargo may

fall into the hands of Islamists currently waging a bloody insurgency

against the transitional federal government in Somalia.

A pirate spokesman said any international attempt at military

action to free the hostages would result in their death.

"If any warships attack, nobody on the ship will live: either we

will all survive or we will all die," Sugale Ali, a spokesman for the

pirates, told dpa by satellite phone on Monday.

The pirates have demanded a ransom of 20 million dollars to

release the cargo ship and its crew.

Seventeen Ukrainians, two Russians, and one Latvian were being

    held hostage aboard the Faina.

A third Russian, the ship‘s former captain Vladimir Kolobkov, died

on Sunday, the ship‘s deputy captain Viktor Nikolsky told dpa.

There has also been confusion over the final destination of the

    military cargo.

Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua insists the equipment is

for use by the Kenyan military, but the US Navy, the pirates and

other officials say the equipment is destined for South Sudan.

"According to my information, the shipment is going to south

Sudan," Mwangura said. "This is the fourth or fifth such shipment to

    come through Kenya."

North and South Sudan have maintained a fragile peace since 2005,

although recent tensions in the town of Abyei brought the two sides

    close to war again.

Should the shipment prove to be headed for South Sudan, the

prospects for long-term peace could be dealt another blow.

Ukrainian government officials have said the shipment was a

legitimate state-to-state arms delivery from Ukraine to Kenya.

Piracy is rife in the Gulf of Aden - a strategic shipping route

off Somalia - with around a dozen ships currently in the hands of

armed groups, the latest victim being a Greek vessel seized Saturday.

Two other pirated vessels, MV Capt Stefanos and MV Centauri, are

also anchored in the same location as the Ukrainian ship, the US Navy

    said.

However, pirates have over the past few days released three ships

    - Japanese vessel the MV Stella Maris and Malaysian tankers the MT

Bunga Melati 2 and the MT Bunga Melati 5 and - although ransoms of

several million dollars are believed to have been paid.

The thing I love about this story is that the pirates have a press spokesman. (Who, a colleague tells me, is a well-spoken and urbane sort of fellow.)

    Other comments:

    1. It's not clear if the Russians have a ship on station or not, last I heard they were sending a frigate from the Baltic.

    2. I wasn't aware of this but in early September the French tracked down and took into custody 6 of about 12 pirates who had grabbed one of these luxury sailing ships, and now you can see vids on Youtune of the poor pirates getting surrounded by French Force Especiale troppers and Alouette helicopters in the Somali desert.

    3. I correct my earlier estimate the boats that the pirates used against the Ukrainian cargo ship, pictures show they were motorboats in the 2-3 meter range.

    4. I assume the reason the cargo ship companies don't do the logical thing and just mount a .50 on all four quarters of the ship is insurance and the cost of keeping the guns crewed; a manned MG of any kind would convert these pirate speedboats into hamburger carriers in a minute or less.

    5. The Ukrainian cargo ship also seems to have depleted uranium shells for the T-72s; so sooner or later every one is going to go beserk about the alleged and very silly environmental hazard, even if they could care less about the lives of the crew.

I wasn't at all stating the military info is always correct(that is actually funny as anyone who served can testify to), just that how do any of know what is going on, unless we are in comms with someone on the USS Howard? I am sure the military has a much better idea and the real story is most likely being kept secret. It's funny how in this thread alone there are conflicting reports. Not to mention the pirates are refuting what is happening.

The things I saw coming across my desk while I was serving as a Task Group Operator certainly weren't speculative. What I saw being reported on the news, and what we were reviewing were not always in line with each other. Not disagreeing that news sources do sometimes have info, but my personal experiences showed me that the military intel we received on a daily basis was usually on the mark in accordance with world events. This was info being shared with all the admirals on down to the captains of ships. For some of us it was central to our missions wherever we were in the world. I have seen this all before. If this wasn't a US interest, then why is the USS Howard there when we haven't meddled in Somalian piracy affairs before? I was just making the point that this bigger than the news is reporting. Maybe I am wrong because I no longer have an insiders view. It's my Spidey sense working overtime I guess.

  6. I think that is true of any profession. Anyone who writes about what someone does will never be as accurate as the actual person who does the job. And lets not forget war is a very political subject. The viewpoint is always from one side or another unless they are writing a manual for operation which should be neutral. Once again, your response was an incredible read and much appreciated. Facts are often distorted in media. The real task is sorting through the layers to get to the truth.

  7. The pirates don't exactly take the cargo only - they take the WHOLE SHIP. Somalian coast is the modern version of the Pirates of the Carribean, but this time with modern super-fast speedboats, RPG rocket launchers, and GPS systems. I doubt that any sub or military vessel was shadowing the captured ship either - the only navy willing to get involved in combatting piracy off the coast of Somalia have been French, and they are terribly overstreched with one military base in the area, and have been calling for help for years. Noone wants to get involved, because solving a problem at sea involves solving the problem on land in Somalia. And the problem is getting more and more serious with 80 ship hijackings just in August - certain port cities in Somalia are literally converted into heavily defended pirate towns where they tow captured vessels to wait for ransom.

So, no special forces, submarines or other developments like that - that stuff only happens in the movies. This was a straight hijacking in a place where 3 vessels a day get attacked.

From what I've read from Ukranian sources tanks were valued at around 800,000-1 mil each. Ransom is posted at 35 million, however it is unclear whether tanks are included in it.

Actually to say that stuff only happens in the movies isn't actually true. I sailed on FFG??(I have to keep some of what we did secret, I am sure that's what my clearance stated..hehe) for four years. We had Seals on board and we tracked cargo ships throughout the west coast of South America. We boarded those ships all of the time. Nothing fantastic about that. And you don't believe we are tracking that ship off the coast of Somalia? Why shadow with a sub, our satellites do a much better job. Trust me, the news doesn't have to tell you the truth, it's just that we like to believe it because it is the primary source of info for those of you not screening top secret messages coming across teletypes and military communications.

  8. I was doing a mission involving a sniper and my sniper was in a tall building and he had LOS on an trench with 10 + bad guys hiding in it. I have never in all my time playing CMSF seen what I saw happen and I can only chalk it up to the fact a Marine was behind the rifle now and stellar changes to the engine itself. I wish I could have created a video of it.

Each time on of them stuck his head up and became unpanicked, he got his head blown off. It was hilarious in a sense. One would stick his head up and get shot, a few moments later another would life his head up and BOOM! One by one they went down in a line. I eventually had a trench of bodies. I had another unit recon the trench and lo and behold they were all dead. Amazing. It goes without saying I was able to clear the board in that fashion and had a total victory. That is most likely the most bad ace moment in a game I have ever witnessed.

  9. "Generation Kill", just like the book, "Jarhead", is inaccurate, politically biased, and in my view, a pile of vile trash.

I recommend "No True Glory" by Bing West, "My Men are my Heros" by Nathaniel Helms, and "The Savage Wars of Peace" by Max Boot.

What was politically biased about Generation Kill? I didn't see that at all. Did the author inject his viewpoint, yes. But that is the difference between a book written by a soldier and on written by a Rolling Stone journalist. I think if that was his motive her succeeded and I can see it from his perspective. I am not so rooted in a philosophy that I can't see another persons perspective. But to each his own Also what was inaccurate about it? Keep in mind this was a reporters perspective. I am just curious because I am ex-mil and an avid reader of military books and I felt it was well written from the perspective of an embedded reporter. I will definitely check those books out you suggested. Didn't read Jarhead, saw movie and was unimpressed.

  10. Thanks for the book title. I just finished reading Generation Killand need another title. Any other books out there you have found interesting? Believe it or not Oliver Stones "Assassins" was pretty damn good. I had no idea he had a talent for fiction. Another awesome book on the subject of SF units is Tom Clancy's Shadow Warriors.

  11. Are you telling me that Chuck Norris's portrayal of a Delta operator was false? Charlie Sheen really wasn't a SEAL?

Man I was there! Chuck and me storming in to grab those hostages, it was so covert. I still run my dune buggy with blue lights for fun. I took the ole' motorbike out yesterday and launched a few missiles from the bike at pumpkins. It was an awesome day.

  12. Do you have to deploy an ATGM to use it? I was just playing PBEM game and I had tanks in my ATGM crew's sites and they never launched. They were beyond the 500 mm min range. Turn after turn they just stood there while his tanks advanced and soon were under the 500 mm range and all was lost (Being Syrian ain't easy!).

  13. This is why it pays to have a remote desktop client installed on your home machine. I can connect to it

from work and start the download whenever it's available, then by the time I'm

home I can fire it up and play! No waiting!!

I will probably be told not to mention a product here, but as far a remotely controlling your computer, check out logmein. I use it daily to get around the firewall at work and access my Myspace at home. I love it and it's free.

  14. Biggest problem with SF units, is the organization. It's almost impossible to make an ODA, and then add say an attachment, ex. Air Force CAC. Then make it operate properly. CMSF just doesn't wanna do it.

I tried, then got pissed. But, it's probably just me.

BTW, I don't think airborne's a big deal. Just have a light fighter unit, reinforce a few minutes in, and they appear, albeit no chutes, but hell, gotta use a little imagination.

Airborne is merely an infil. Air Assault can be infil, efil, redistribution of forces, and CAS. I'd rather air assault over airborne any day.

Isn't the SF battalion organization the exact same as a standard battalion? When I researched it, it appeared so. Correct me if I am wrong. Are you referring to the team size? If so then I guess you have a problem since there a captain leads a 12 man team and to make that team would be impossible I suppose.

  15. This would likely work fine for Rangers.....but in terms of SOF type units.....I think an additional tweak/s (internal) would be needed (and hope to see them!). Just making the units slightly even more proficient than what we see from elite now (in terms of weapons accuracy, morale, etc).

So then who is elite? I mean another level of experience seems overkill when there are already 4 or 5. I mean elite means you are the best. A total bad ace. Give them the best equipment and high leadership and in my eyes you have the best the game has to offer.

  16. Maybe I am crazy, but when I bought the game the exe worked.

I think he is referring to the horrendous state CM:SF was released in. Let be honest and say the game didn't receive a single good review that I read. We all know 1.10 is where the game should have been when it was released, but it's all water under the bridge now. I think everyone loves the game now and is anxiously awaiting Moro..I mean Marines.

  17. Call me crazy, but it seems a unit w/ a Javelin, the Javelin operator always goes down first. Try entering a building and you will see what I mean. Almost always when clearing building Jav operator goes down. Good luck getting that buddy to pick up the Jav in a building. Hard enough to get them to perform buddy aid in a building, or on a roof. Dunno why that is. Maybe I am crazy.
