  1. Calvin, thanks for the tip, I wasn't aware of that shortcut (is it in the manual?)

Bardosy, my fellow Hungarian (a wild guess),

I haven't played that scenario yet but it seems to me that what you have is an intentional scenario design. We know that there are unconventional combatants in the game so it just might be that this is an ambush scenario where uncons are spotted only at the last moment, when they get too close or when they trigger the ambush. Until then they are hiding among the civilians. Who are abstracted of course. But I'll have to read the scenario briefing to be sure of this.

And now that you mention it, and following up to my earlier point about troops not wanting to get beck into the Strykers, I also experienced something like this: the number of troops that rode one vehicle just does not fit in the next time I send them to mount the very same vehicle.

  2. I can't say that my AFVs are better at spotting than the troops...but they're definitely better in relaying info. So, it might just happen that when AFV's spot sth they are aware of it for a longer time than troops, who by moving around, have to spot and re-spot much more often. AFV's seem to retain info better probably due to the better comms. That might explain what you experience. But this is just a wild, very undereducated guess.

  3. hey,

my experience is that in open areas out in the desert you really need to grind the Syrians into the ground before letting your troops move up. But that's logical and anyway they do have the sense of getting into the empty trenches and using them. I rarely do an assault, rather have them simply "move". That's much better for awareness. So that's OK.

In cities heavy covering fire does the trick for me. However, if there is a main entrance in the line of fire and one in the back they still tend to use the main door. They're either being polite or it's part of an abstraction element.

  4. First of all I think that 1.03 is a huge improvement on the whole. As I have already reported earlier, I had serious framerate issues before, a lot of that is gone, even with the better graphics. Pathfinding improved, AI seems better, Syrian troops don't just lay down now, etc.

I came across a couple of things which might be bugs:

    1. Troops won't mount the same Stryker they dismounted from. This happened several times in the first campaign scenario. After having aquired the Javelin, I sent them up on the ridge, lighted up a few tanks then ordered them back into the Stryker to move them down the line. They wouldn't enter it, just camped around it. I used all the movement commands.

    2. Same scenario. I can't select units that are on the main road. I mean tanks and Strykers. Once they get on the main road leading to the main gate of the compound I can't select them with a left-click, just keep clicking but nothing happens. Must be some graphics issue.

    3. I still have problems with selecting multiple units in a box(shift+left click). It only works at the 4th or 5th try or is incomplete and causes some serious lag.

    My rig:Win XP SP2, AMD 2400+, 1 GIG RAM, Radeon 9600, 256 MB.

I have the graphics set to balanced and improved, Anti-Aliasing turned off, Ati click off.

  5. Holy Macaulay Culkin!!!

I never actually thought that there's a direct link between Metallica and the CM series but now, reading Steve's posts...

Dig this: I grew up in Ceausescu's Romania listening to Master and Justice...How's that for hardcore Weltanschauung.

I used to think that anything from Justice for all...on was sth else. Not Metallica. Then i saw the Some kind of Metal Whining Therapy and my genuine affection came back for these guys. I mean it's the same people who made all that great stuff. They're only human.

I think CMSF should be called CM:Kill'em All. Simple, to the point.

If the actual reason for not firing is, that the bunker had been vacated and the enemy troops were hiding behind it, I must commend the Javelin team's eyesight then - the range was quite long. It sounds a bit weird though. How can they know the bunker is *really* empty by just eyeballing it from a long distance away. Do they have x-ray vision or something? In any case, I would have taken out the bunker, just in case, no matter what.

my guess here would be that it's not x-ray vision that they have but once opfor vacate the bunker, machinegun fire stops coming from it. that's what tells them it's empty. bunkers usually hold machineguns.
  7. I also got stuck with this scenario and just moved on to the next

    HOWEVER. try this:

Use the Stryker MGSes to blow a couple of houses to smethereens. just pick any, the ones holding a couple of opfor have obvious preference. that will create a smallish safezone as in my experience they move away from nearby buldings as well (unless its an objective) where you can pour in a squad at least and get a foothold.

and then I guess it's either good old house to house with smoke and support fire or you can try to use your squad to spot and just point target with arty any nearby bulding that looks askance.

also, from what i saw while playing, unmounted soldiers are not much better at spotting than, say, a stryker. so if you're willing to lose a couple of guys in house to house just to clear a smallish area, then there won't be RPGs around and the stryker can come in and do the spotting.
