  1. I restarted the mission and managed to get a total victory with 27 killed and 46 wounded.

    *spoilers*

I pushed hard from the beginning. Getting the recon troops into the village to harrass the advancing enemy with sniper and mortar fire while the first platoon took the hill to the left. The 2nd platoon reinforced the position in the village and pushed further against the enemy advance. I positioned the 3rd platoon on the hill facing the enemy spawn point and although they were "prepared" they still suffered heavy loses trying to defeat the enemy flanking attack. The remnants of the 2nd platoon advanced behind the hill to the highway in order to flank the enemy. These rests of 2nd platoon were nearly totally destroyed by the enemy vehicle patrol. The last APC was stopped close to 2nd platoons main position and the secondary explosion killed nearly everyone around.

    Excellent mission Webwing. :D

When I started this scenario two hours ago I really enjoyed it. The map is nice, the enemy AI is well placed and very active and the enemy mortars constantly harrass you. Back than I still enjoyed all that. But now it's just frustrating. It feels like the Syrians aquired some kind of UAVs or reconaissance aircraft because no matter where I move I get shot up by their mortars. Even behind the hill on the left side, although both spotter teams are dead. One time I managed to kill all the enemy on the left side with relatively few casualties only to have a whole company of enemy spawn in my back. This kind of s*** is f****** frustrating.

I'll now go outside and put my head in the snow for half an hour or so to cool down my anger.

  3. Hi,

with the arrival of the 1.11 patch I installed CMSF: Marines (+patch) on a newer and better notebook.

    Its specs:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2 GHZ

    2GB RAM

    Nidia Geforce 8600M GS

    Vista

My old notebook has the following components:

    Intel Centrino 1.8 GHZ

    1GB RAM

ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 256 MB

    XP

I tried out the "Strength and Faith" mission and didn't notice any improvement in performance. I even lowered the resolution to 1024x768 and put the performance options on balanced and still no effect. I don't know how to display the FPS but I've the impression that on the newer notebook the performance is not only not better but actually worse.

I think I can rule out a driver issue because I tested three other games, GRAW 2, MTW2 and GTA IV on the newer notebook. GRAW 2 ran perfectly with all options on middle-high. GTA IV performed reasonably good with all options on low. In MTW2 performance was okay with all options on middle.

So what could be the reason for the bad performance?

I did find the enemy to be a little too spread out. My Find'em kill'em tactics worked too well and was able to form a perimeter around the objective too quickly. I had about 40 minutes of just using my air support to knock down the outer buildings. There was no climax or a fist fight. Just find'em kill'em and move on. Something was missing at the end. I don't know, anybody else feel that?

I'm thinking of strengthening the enemy forces near the market at the town center by positioning more troops in 1-story buildings. This way there will be a few more close-quarter fights you won't be able to avoid by dropping bombs.

    Hi,

as promised I now release my second Afghanistan mission. With the 24th MEU fighting in Garmsir district earlier this year and the USMC released I had little choice but to do a scenario on the battle of Garmsir. I'm planning to do a series of missions around this topic.

In this first mission you battle the Taliban at the very heart of the Garmsir district: the village of Garmsir. I used Google Earth to recreate it. Here is a comparison:

    Garmsir_01.jpg

The map is large and because of the many buildings and foliage quite cpu-heavy. It was a bit laggy with my 4-year old notebook, but with a modern PC you shouldn't have any problems.

The gameplay is all about FISH: Fighting In Somebody Else's House. You have a company of Marines, two platoons of engineers and a couple of HMMWVs at your command. Your task is to clear the village of enemy forces and even with the A-10s and Harriers as air support this is quite a challenge. Most Afghan homes are surrounded by high walls, which makes them little forts. With lots of them grouped together, like in Garmsir village, it gets even more difficult. For the attacking force this can get quite bloody and frustrating. There are a few 2-story buildings, which are excellent vantage points over the rest of the village. You can also try to flank the enemy using one of the roads to the east or west.

Have fun and I'd appreciate your comments/criticism.

  6. I used the large building next to the mg bunker as observation position for my recon troops. You can conquer it even before your reinforcements arrive. I used the LAVs as direct fire support and than assaulted with the scouts. It's something I only managed after a couple of reloads.

From this position you have a perfect view on most enemy AFVs but it's a perfect target for enemy arty as well (keep that in mind or you will loose your recon troops).

  7. I totally agree with Atago. I like to be challanged but if the only way to complete the campaign succesfully is to save-reload your way through each mission it ruins the gameplay.

The campaign designers should arrange the missions and your forces in a way that allows you to sustain casualties and still be able to complete the campaign!!!

In no scenario/campaign before I had to use the save-reload function as much as in the Marines campaign. I usually don't use it at all. For me this type of campaign ruins the gameplay. It is frustrating! Especially if you have, like me, a slow PC with which a reload takes a couple of minutes.

  8. I actually managed to complete the mission on the first try after a few save-reloads, but only with ~30WIA, ~30KIA and several heavily damaged vehicles. With that kind of force taking on the next mission is even harder. I don't know how many missions I've to fight through after Pooth. But with that rate of casualties after 3 or 4 more missions my MEU would be reduced to platoon-size.

So I restarted the whole campaign, with the ultimate aim to bring all my forces through without too much casualties. On my second try of Pooth I managed to loose only about 10 soldiers and no vehicles but got fcuked by the time limit (which really sucks). I'm now on my third try. Preserving units by constant save-reload is possible, but ruins the whole game principle.

Pooth is one of the best Blue on Red CMSF missions I've played so far. But in the context of the campaign it's too hard. For me it's impossible to play this mission without save-reload while preserving my units and keeping the time limit.

  9. Pathfinding of wheeled vehicles in 1.10 is one big fcuk up and source of endless frustration. Watching a truck with a whole squad of marines getting shot up only because the crew decided to not go directly from A to B but to make a detour through the enemy field of fire, make me want to delete this game and burn the CDs.

It's just so frustrating to take casualties not because of some tactical mistake but because of the stupidity of the AI.

Made some interesting experience with artillery in the fourth campaign mission (the one after you get to choose the way to Hims, I chose the right way).

I managed to sneak my troops onto the hill at the right side of the map and with the help of a LAV, capture the largest building. This position provided an excellent overview of large parts of the map. With the arriving infantry I continued further into the town and got surprised by an enemy counter attack towards the large building. The recon troops fought of the first wave until an enemy artillery barrage reduced the building to rubble and nearly annihilated my recon section.

While advancing with the infantry and AAVs as direct fire support into town I was constantly harassed by enemy mortar strikes. Apparently not only FOs but SFs in general have the ability to call in artillery.

With dynamic enemy artillery I've to rethink all the tactics I used in pre 1.10 CMSF. Makes the game much more challenging and interesting. I love it!
