  1. Generally speaking, cities are going to be comparative death traps for US troops, so they ought to be avoided as a general rule, at least by lighter formations (like strykers). Now, if they give us some Abrams and Bradley support, then I might be more willing.

  4. Sure they would, they'd just have to integrate a decent FPS engine into the game so we can take direct control over the SF raids. I mean, that shouldn't be too hard to do, right?
  5. Does anyone else find themselves feeling like an ignorant schoolboy when reading JasonC's posts? Incidentally, Jason, thank you for this fascinating dialogue on attritionist warfare. NuB, thank you as well.
  6. Go browse the Battlefield 2 forums, then come back here and read what you wrote again. You'll laugh as hysterically as I did, I promise.
  7. Bleh. Well, that was completely unsatisfying. For whatever reason, the AI proved utterly unable to cope with being flanked. I took my initial tiger on a move-fast blitz down a side street in the village, and started poking my nose out in each of the cross streets, destroying a few tanks each time. Of course, that was made easier by the AI's stubborn refusal to acknowledge I was behind its tanks. After knocking out three, I noticed the remainder were facing away from me, towards the Axis start location...and never tried turning until they were engaged, by which time, of course, it was too late. So I took out virtually all the Allied tanks with my starting Tiger due to an AI glitch. Meh.
  8. *blink* There're reinforcements? Oh. I suppose I should pay more attention to the briefings. Yes, that's quite helpful.
  9. Much as I enjoy Heinlein, he wasn't necessarily advocating any of the systems he presented in his books--the governments of Starship Troopers and The Moon is a Hars Mistress are rather different, for example.
  10. I was under the impression that this idea was a non-starter. A friend of mine, who was interning with a senator, sat in on hearings regarding Iran, and the universal opinion expressed by those called to testify was to the effect of, "Yeah, um, the only way to be sure we get their nuclear capability is to use ground troops."
  11. Appreciate the advice. I've played all three demos and done decently in them--at least, by my standards. JasonC's posts are indeed quite helpful as well. However, in the scenario I mentioned the axis player is provided with a Tiger, and nothing else. The problem isn't so much infantry--they're easy to rout in the first few turns. The problem is the eight or so Allied tanks. Half Stuarts and half Cromwell IIIs (I believe). I'm finding it impossible to avold being surrounded and subsequently destroyed.
  12. So, I finally got around to picking up CMBO (and CMBB and CMAK, but whatever). I had a vague memory of reading about the villers-bocage scenario in the PCG review of the game, and decided to start with that. Anyway, playing as the Axis, I find myself getting my butt kicked. Over and over again. What usually happens is I drive my Tiger up, start butchering HTs and dismounts, then get surrounded by tanks and suffer a side penetration. Still, even when I try to play a bit more cautiously I find myself getting flanked and knocked out.I have two questions. A: any specific advice for playing as the Axis in this scenario? B: Any advice on the use of unsupported armor (Tigers in particular) in general?
  13. Epaminondas > * I mean, c'mon, he took out the Spartans. You can't beat that, I says!
  14. For those of use who are utterly clueless about firearms, what was responsible for those results?
  15. May I suggest that the last player to do damage to anyone pressing ctrl-k be given kill credit? Air-to-air duels in BF1942 were rather irritating because whenever planes were significantly damaged the pilot would bail out, and one wouldn't get credit for the shootdown. Minor quibble, of course
