One of the Ropucha landing ships that got out of Berdiansk this morning is apparently sailing around in circles off the coast now. Anyone have any insight in to whether it might be deliberate or indicative of damage?
Steering could be damaged and jammed in turning in one direction only. Hence the circle movement only.

Anyone want to bet that after the war, some people in Russia will point to the absence of young men in LDNR as "evidence" that they were right about Ukraine committing genocide?
Sadly in this post-truth world of ours it seems inevitable

In your assessment, how prolific is the Ukranian use of AT-mines and IEDs? Is it a vital part of controlling advances and covoys?

I was thinking about this, maybe it's just a different mindset / life experience whatever.
Anyway, I'm not in favor of WW3 and or NATO mindlessly jumping in the current war. I'm not in favor of starting up MAD if Russia chooses to use one tactical nuke. However, it will be a game changer and unfortunately would bring 'total annihilation' a step closer. Probably governments/militaries are already working on such contingency planning.
Personally I'd say tell Putin that if he uses a tac nuke, all options are on the table including boots on the ground in Ukraine. I also don't get why NATO/USA was so explicit in that they won't be sending troops, before the thing happened. Keeping some boots on the ground in Ukraine for whatever invented reason could have dissuaded Putin to invade, but even just saying the previously usual 'keeping all options on the table' wouldn't have cost a dime and might have done the same.
Anyway regarding the nukes, isn't this just a classic case of 'expect the worst, hope for the best'?
There is plenty of game theory around MAD, but all assume that both sides press the button when it is clear the other side has launched. If we aren't prepared to press button, we might as well handover the nukes (and our will) and be done with it.But I refuse to allow Putin (or whomever) the pleasure of having me/us worrying whether he will be mad enough to destroy the earth. Because that's probably exactly the intent of such threats.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for standing up to effing s**thead Putin, but the sad fact is that we have to factoring in the reality of the worst before deciding what to do. Personally, my fear turns to white hot anger in a somewhat productive way. If I didn’t worry, then I would start to worry if you get what I mean. So, when the war is over and we are all hopefully still here, I intend on turning that anger into a strong opposition to nuclear weapons. They are barbaric. It is insane that some countries can have them and thereby weild enourmous power over other countries. And they can have thousands of them. Can Sweden have one? Noooooo! So, my conclusion is that no one should have any. Is that realistic. No. Does that mean I will accept it. No. Anger/fear in this case turns to reaction/action which is productive for me. Accepting that people toy with the world for power’s sake (see lyrics for Dylan’s Masters of War). Am I a pacifist? No, but darn close to.

I really don’t get that casual attitude to total annihilation?!

No, it seems there was another building there, the one with "SPORT LIFE" on the facade in the pic AKD linked to. The strike erased it completely.
Aha, the first version of his post included two identical pics that fooled me.

Ok so the reason I didn't think the missile had hit the building directly was that it hit another building, and that this building was so completely obliterated that I could not see even traces of it on the photo. I guess there was an ammunitions depot there.
I'm surprised such a big structure could be completely blown away like a leaf by the wind and still not leave any crater.
I saw reports yesterday of launch of thermobaric rockets. Would those cause this ”gutting” of an entire building without one big crater?

I still am not seeing any discussions around what happens if Putin decides to play Madman and drops a tactical nuke on a Ukrainian City and demands a total surrender . How is that dealt with except by someone on the Russian Side interceding and taking Putin out ? The West / NATO will not respond I am quite sure and Putin will have the world by its balls .
I’m also afraid that this scenario is in play if/when Putin faces total military humiliation. To ”save face” and spread fear into all and one who defies him.

I might be mistaken here, but don’t winds in Ukraine mostly blow from west/north west to east/south east as they do in most of the northern hemisphere? If Russia nuked Ukraine, where would most of the initial fallout be deposited? Not north in Poland, or anywhere east, unless they chose that specific wind direction.
The opposite winds was present when Chernobyl blew its lid. Sweden was one of the first countries sounding the alarm that something bad had happened.

I've seen this sort of error before. If someone popped in "Springfield, United States" they'd get a whole bunch of very, very, very different locations I've caught this a couple of times on LiveLeak.
Steve
Heck, there are about IIRC 8 Stockholm in the US, so even a capital city can be somewhere else entirely.

Javelins are used, it's just that they weren't filmed in any cool cinematic way because they aren't as omnipresent as NLAW and aren't as safe to use as Stugna.
But there is a video that was released just yesterday where two of our guys at the front lines were talking about how on the first day they shot 5 javelin missiles from their position, taking out two tanks and two APCs before finally getting spotted by another tank and getting knocked out by a shock wave... and then escaping hospital after only a week to get back into the fight where they are now - and once again armed with Javelins.
So those are used alright.
Could it be that Javelins are used at longer range attacks and are therefore harder to get a good video of?

Vladimir Putin's Daughter's House Raided by Activist Holding Ukraine Flag (msn.com)
Oligarch Oleg Deripaska had a luxury apartment in central London taken over by squatters who intend to turn it into shelter for Ukrainian refugees. I’m certain the police will turn a blind eye to it - more than willingly.

This is the important thing to focus on. Regardless of what you two Capitalist Dogs think about who should be commanding them and how to rank them for targets, the point is that RUSSIA should value these assets and ensure they don't get zapped, not to mention abandoned. And yet they are not. We've seen quite a lot of bridging scattered on the roads of Ukraine so far, Russians obviously rank them far lower than you two do
Steve
I don’t get how there can be so much abandoned gear sitting around in pristine condition. Isn’t spiking the gun or damaging vital systems a thing in the modern era? It is almost as if the ruskies who abandon them leave them as a parting gift in protest of the war, before they try to blend into the general population

Hence constant force recon missions. Especially you gotta give it to heroic guys of Azov, who, being completely encircled, keep going out and killing russians.
Not to mention constant harassing of logistics making russians literally starve to a point where looting is now an official order.
If they resort to looting, stores and supermarkets could become great ambush sites. Let them die for their food.

Pretty informative look at the slat armor on the roofs of T-72s:
I found this interesting. Steve, would it be lots of work for Charles to model this type of slat armor on top of existing tanks in CMBS? Would be interesting, not only for the CM community, to see how the Javelin would fare against it using the CM-engine for real life analysis. Is it viable for full protection? Mitigation of damage etc?
Also, Steve, after seeing this - what would be your guess as how effective it is against NLAW?
-
How much would those cages slow down turret traversal? Could impede combat effectiveness perhaps.

I'm also a Cold War kid, and I must admit that this feels different. The whole MAD doctrine is based on both actors being rational.
Two questions: How crazy is Putin really? Could he launch if he wanted to?
Me too. Just the mention of going full nuclear brought back childhood fears, nightmares and the looming threat of total annihilation. I can’t turn those emotions off even as an adult.

I guess they are not keeping up with the Ruble value in todays market.
I heard a russian speaking translator pronounce the Ruble "rubble". That was kinda appropriate by now.

Thanks, that looks like the the list BBC uses in abbreviated form. Though they put APVs as "Armored Patrol Vehicles" which to me seems to miss APCs and such.

I haven't followed this thread yet and won't read through the 100 pages, so forgive me if this has been asked before: Has Ukraine released any figures for number of captured POWs? That could be a good indicator of the fighting morale, or lack thereof, of the Russian forces.

Some sound enhancment apps, such as Nahemic, can cause all CM games to crash. Delete or inactivate and see if it works.
-
The base texture should but I'm not 100% about the "mini" texture as they seem to be of various sizes for different ground textures and seemingly vary from game to game. So my advice is just try it.

Wow! If this is correct it is a pretty good measurement of what corruption does to your armed forces.
