  1. Of course it'd be easiest if the modders themselves would upload their mods to the Repository, but that won't happen - some of those people I haven't seen in years, some still are around, but might not have gotten the word yet.

I'm all for getting a complete mirror and have it stored/uploaded somewhere else, but that needs to be coordinated, like Redwolf already pointed out. So, Redwolf, how do we go about it?

  2. Yup... that's what it will come down to. But who's gonna send those DVDs to Germany and back again? ;P

But the Repository is a good start, so let's get to it! Do we try to upload every single one, or do we just upload those publically acclaimed to be the best? Do we try to contact the mod authors? And last, but not least: is there anybody at all that has every single mod stored somewhere?

  3. I know what you mean - and, in fact, I liked PSP very much. But due to professional reasons I had to work with PS and stayed with it after I had learned the basics.

There is more than one good graphics program out there (some even still for free!) and in the end it comes down to preference. Besides, you're still the one to have done that mud&dirt tutorial, so all the honor goes to you, anyway - no matter which program you use! ;)

  4. Ah, I suspected as much. Shouldahve known it was based on Gautrek's tutorial (which I haven't tried yet, I admit). I use PhotoShop, of course (or luckily), but "PSP" stands for "Paint Shop Pro", a longt-time viable alternative to PS. Seems to have gotten out of use pretty much by now, though... I started working with PSP, actually - and rather liked it -, but then everyone turned to PS so I converted, too.

And thanks for the fast answer!

  5. Well, luderbamsen effectively has said all that is necessary. I'll try to be as short and precise as possible with a few additional facts:

    - According to HM Nr.181 and 322 (dated February 1943) all vehicles were to be painted in Dunkelgelb (RAL7028) at the factory

    - Frontline units were to be supplied with camouflage paste in Olivgrün (RAL6003) and Schokoladenbraun (RAL8017) and to paint their vehicles in a disruptive pattern according to regional/seasonal requirements

    - Schwarzgrau (often referred to as "Panzer Grey", RAL 7021) vehicles were not to be completely repainted, but instead had a variety of two-color and three-color patterns applied to them

Which leads to the conclusion that there surely was a transition period in which Dunkelgelb and Schwarzgrau vehicles were used alongside each other in the same units to varying degrees. It is, of course, difficult (and not really necessary) coding-wise to implement such a transition period in the game - although it would have been a nice option for modders.

Reasons for the change probably were (which I can only confirm from secondary soruces, but which sound plausible to me) that

    1) Grey was used on the vehicles because they were supposed to be parked in the shadows and the color would help hide them from the air

    2) Dust and mud would accumulate on grey vehicles according to regional/seasonal conditions and help the vehicle blend in with the surroundings

    3) Introduction of Dunkelgelb because of the lack of suitable buildings and woods to park the vehicles and the predominant color of the Russian steppe in summer which is a dull tan

If I got anything wrong, I ask someone more knowledgeable than me to correct my above statement as necessary. Either way, there still are 2 patterns which also might need to be discussed at this point: yellow on grey and green on grey, both reported already in 1942.

  6. One of the major benefits of the new Module system is that we can stop having the grunt work (adding TO&E, models, art, scenarios, campaigns, etc.) compete with improving the game engine itself. From the customers' perspective this is great because there is both a steady flow of new stuff to play as well as a steadily improving game engine all within a fairly compact amount of time compared to CMx1. It also keeps us from burning out trying to do too much all at once, which is great for us but also good for you guys since happy developers are more productive developers

Although I like this approach since it means less waiting for something new it'll also mean that every mopdule/patch will probably introduce something new engine- and feature-wise, right? So... I come to the conclusion that there will come the day when you have to do it all over again because the maturity of the engine allows for so many new and exciting features to be implemented in the base game that, say, CM:Normandy just - excuse my language - most totally sucks. Will that be the way we're going from here or will there indeed be some retrofitting along the line? Because from what I figure it'd mean indeed reiterating some of the current games/settings to a certain degree - and I just cannot see that happening somehow... care to enlighten me?

  7. Thanks for the link, that is exactly what I was planning on acquiring next!

And the swastika (or SS runes and all that stuff) are indeed forbidden and illegal, but only if displayed in public and/or with the intention of glorifying the associated organisations/persons. there are some symbols, though, that are even forbidden when clearly NOT associated with any illegal actions or organisations, like the celtic cross. But that just as a side note. ;)

  8. Though I wonder how they did that - and "other people" (like Jentz&Doyle) claiming that there is NO original color left on ANY item of the war (at least not in unchanged state), I'm not sure I can lay my hands on any of theses issues. Especially not in Germany. ;)

But I admit for me modding is not just putting some colors on a vehicle but in fact moe some kind of 'historical modelling' - so I usually spend some time researching production variants, colors, employment etc. So forgive me if I do explain a little bit too much sometimes.

  9. Ah, that you mean. Well, current RAL colors are different from the RAl colors used in the war. Probably not too much, but still different.

I have based my mod on these colors: TigerColors.jpg - I would agree that RAL7021 is actually pretty dark, but when I compare photographs of vehicles, the lightness varies from a very dark grey like the above to a rather light grey like the one I used. Not sure why most vehicles don't look that dark, but I like a lighter grey, actually.

If everything fails, we can still assume that, becasue of the fact the vehicle serves in Africa, the grey has faded somewhat. ;)

  10. It's supposed to be RAL8000 "Gelbbraun" on top of RAL7021 "Dunkelgrau"/"Panzergrau" on a vehicle seen in Libya, March 1941. Standing orders (HM 1941, Nr. 281) stated that Panzergrau vehicles deployed to Africa were to be repainted with RAL8000 as new base color and disruptive patches of RAL7008 "Graugrün" on top. Given the fact that RAL7008 is, in fact, pretty dark and possible shortages of paint it is reasonable to assume that only one color was used and the patches left in RAL7021.

  11. I'd like tos ee the Möbelwagen for a change since it ALWAYS gets left out because other stuff is looking better - even if that means throwing historical accuracy out of the window. Plus, the Möbelwagen was built in greater numbers than any other Flakpanzer. ;)

And What's the problem with animating? It doesn't make too great a difference if you animate four sidewalls or just one. What you are hinting at is that employment of it will be made much more difficult for the average player because you have to think of the time it needs to be ready to fire. Although I don't see the need to have them driving around the battlefield all the time - they're supposed to shoot at planes, not infantry or vehicles. And, because of the need to lower the sidewalls - and therefore exposing the gun crew, the Möbelwagen would have only been used for support fire in an emergency, in my opinion. Which is the reason why the SdKfz10 shouldn't be used in that role, either.

  12. Well, this thread isn't exactly about ToW and I admit I'm a bit spoiled because of CM. I also admit that a lot depends on if you like ToW or you don't. As a matter of fact, I do - but I sorely missed some things which made playing not as much fun as it could have. maybe i should try the new JSH mod version...

Back on topic, though: I think we'll get one AA tank for each army. Question is which one? My bet is out for the Möbelwagen for the Germans - ~250 built and we're talking the June/July timeframe which makes the other types (save maybe the FlakPz38) unprobable...

What's your bet, guys? Which vehicles do you think will be inlcuded?

  13. But if it si indeed a Flak it cannot be a 251/21 since that mounted the 20mm MG151/15 or MG151/20; also note that the 20mm ammunition is different form the Flak38. (see Panzer Tracts 15-3, pp. 55-64)

Regarding the 251/17 it is stated that it mounted either a KwK38 or Flak38; I have to admit, though, that photographic evidence is scrace at best for that vehicle. (see the above, pp. 50-51)

  14. Wooo... Arnhem Bridge? Charles must already have coding nightmares when thinking about all the other stuff! And, notwithstanding the fact that a lot of people ALWAYS complain, something not closely modeled to the real bridge is gonna make too many people unhappy - better leave it out altogether and have people build it from other parts like CMx1...

Steve, where's our official anouncement and the first screens? ;)
