  1. It's definately 'niggly' trying to get your guys to move to the edge of a crest. Telling them to slow move to the crest results in guys all over the place - if they move at all. The biggest problem is not everyone lines up on the crest like they do in real life, meaning the firepower of your unit is heavily reduced. To get them all exposed means some units are way over exposed and usually take heavy fire. It would be nice if there were formation commands, column, vee, line, echelon left/right, wedge, 'scattered' etc.
  2. Going left and gaining that hill is absolutely vital. You can basically clear the entire enemy force with one platoon from that hill (if you stock them up with full ammo), and then all that's left is to clearing the buildings - which is the hard part. Interesting usage of smoke btw. I tried popping smoke to cross the main road from the west side and then into the trenches on the east side, but it proved a little futile.
  3. Don't you get points for friendly casualties and condition? I've seen plenty of missions in the campaign where you get 1000 points if your troops are mostly intact. Oh wait, you're not talking about overall, you're talking about saving specific units. Nevermind. =P
  4. Im just utterly sick of the moronic bickering between allied nations over ridiculous points. Let's get the job done first then worry about what went wrong and how to avoid it after. I can't be bothered refuting all of your other points Phillip, I could quite easily but I've been down this road a million times before, and don't want to be a hypocrit since I've stated we should stop arguing. Besides, as people have pointed out, this thread is about Afghanistan.
  5. Sorry mate but your head is completely in the sand. I suggest you take it out one day and take a look around, because Iraq is well on the road to recovery. Despite the "pre-text" for the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, what really is ironic is how so many people supported 1991 because the U.N. said it was OK, despite the fact the coalition came in, bombed the living **** out of the country, slapped on sanctions, then left. Oh, not before promosing to support a coup which they didn't resulting in further bloodshed. However 2003 oh no, it's so WRONG, despite the fact this time instead of blowing the place up from the air, soldiers are sent in to minimise civilian casualties, billions are dollars are spent on reconstruction and despite the heavy toll they are staying the course. When you said "Bush's agenda" I assume you meant George Bush the first? Because GWB certainly is pouring a ton of American taxpayer dollars into giving a **** about the Iraqi people right now. STFU. Remember who the enemy is. If we in the west can't band together and resort to petty squabbling in the face of adversity then our time is surely up.
  6. Yeah towards the end I did a 'gamey' suicide charge to get close to the objectives, which is where the vast majority of my casualties came from. I know how to make the scenario significantly easier this time. There are three buildings that need to be Javelined in order to stand a chance, unfortunately my guys wasted two javelins in WEGO against enemy troops. Your javelins are your artilley, and I think its key to save them until the end to take out the remaining enemy fortified positions. Ill try again 1.3. I enjoy this mission. It's challanging and you learn a lot. BTW - playing through again even through I know where the enemy is, I pretend not too. This way it gives a better indication of mission difficulty for you. 7. The Aussies are staying in Iraq but removing their combat forces. MikoyanPT - every countries sacrifice is appreciated. I come from New Zealand, so I remember to appreciate the efforts of those countries who can't contribute as much. However, the Portuguese are doing more than some larger countries out there who want to jump on the "We're in Afghanistan!" gravy train without any of the hard work.
  8. Careful where you go with this Skelley. The Canadians for example are taking far more of the brunt of the fighting than the U.S. in Afghanistan at the moment. But yes, some allies are there just for show.
  9. I went back to my savegame before it crashed and finished the mission. Very tough. I never got my reinforcements and a lot of my units were badly chopped up. My troops were out of ammo, squads decimated, and my entire force was basically combat ineffective by the end, thus I called for a cease-fire. This is what the battle-map looked like at the end: It's definately do-able without the 2nd company, but damn is it hard. [ December 07, 2007, 03:33 PM: Message edited by: DaveDash ]
  10. The U.S. hasn't actually started a single war in the last 50 years. Not even in 2003, that was just termination of a cease-fire. But they have been involved with many - yes.
  11. I think right now, how you've done it in V1.1, it's acheiveable but difficult if the 2nd Company doesn't arrive in time. And it's relatively easy if the 2nd company does arrive in time. I think it adds to the scenario more than takes away by having the random arrival time. You have to plan accordingly. This mission also is damn good for practicing infantry tactics and getting them right. I'm used to just blowing stuff up with IFVs and using infantry in secondary sweep/clear RPGs role.
  12. Very interesting. It's definately worth cleaning up the wounded then. Nice one BFC.

  15. The Brits left far more succcessful colonies than most European powers (Aust, NZ, Canada, USA, Hong Kong, SA, etc). And as for your second point, ironically, didnt Prince William - a Brit Royal no doubt - want to be sent to Iraq?
  16. The surge hasn't been the sole reason though, it's part of numerous reasons that have helped provide an overall security increase to the Iraq people. Getting the Sunni's AND Iranians onboard helped a lot. Well actually in different times - about 66 years ago the Allies did suppot Stalin. By your logic, Stalin is also "Made in the USA".
  17. Im assuming this is some sort of not-so-funny joke. If not - by 'Beaten there soon, too' I assume you're also refering to Iraq. Well you're a bit behind the times buddy, because the "Evil Empire" is far from beaten there, and you can expect a massive influx of troops into Afganistan from Iraq in the next couple of years as things calm down more there. Well if the Soviets didn't invade... chicken, egg, chicken, egg. Different times different measures. I can understand the Brits letting the locals deal with things themselves in the first place. Lets not be too harsh on them, Fallujah anyone?
  18. If you have a man down, and there is a friendly squad close to him, one guy will run next to him and spend the next couple of minutes tending to his wounds - provided they're not pinned. Im not sure what effect this has on your KIA vs WIA, but the body of the soldier dissappears after being taken care of. I thought this was a cool little detail.

  21. First off, I haven't actually managed to play more than a couple minutes due to controls, and second off I'm probably making a bunch of assumptions based off play in STALKER primarily, however; I would assume this is to model the fact that, if your enemy is only hiding behind a rock, couldn't you use a grenade to either hit, stun, or otherwise 'soften the target' to make a full assualt possible, or otherwise flush him out of hiding enough to be hit? Same thing with the trench, if it's low enough to provide prone cover only, I'd think a well placed grenade would solve the problem. If it was more like a WWI trench, where your able to move around fully standing, a grenade might be as effective, but I would still think it'd have the desired effect. </font>
  22. Yeah that's why I suggested the guys attacking the ambushed U.S. forces hang bang in the buildings and just keep them pinned. That way the U.S. guys don't die early on and there is still that sense of urgency, and also, the bad guys dont just all pile in one building and die to Bradley HE.
  23. I played through the updated version and while it was much improved, all my guys ran short of ammo again. I would have won, although suffering heavy casualties, but it crashed about turn 70 on me. Basically all my guys ran low on ammo, and wouldnt really fire at anything anymore, so I just did a mass suicide charge into the middle. Ammo needs to be increased, maybe have three more immobile Strykers sitting around (without javelins, just ammo). The reason I say this is two-fold: 1) The Syrian AI doesnt seem to run low on ammo. Even at the end of the game his units UNLOADED on mine despite these units firing through-out the entire battle. My guys wouldn't even shoot back. His units should have been out of ammo long ago. 2) LOS annoyances in 1.04. Guys on rooftops can shoot at you, but you can't shoot back without saturating the area with area fire. This of course chews through the ammo at a rapid rate. I pretty much mowed through his army from the high hilltop if they were exposed, but I couldn't get close to the town without a suicide charge at the end. The "east" route definately is a death trap. The guys on top of those buildings just wreck havock to your troops THROUGH the hills, and you are incapable of shooting back. I think next time I try I might send a Platoon to take the high hill with tons of ammo, and then send two platoons just straight up the damn middle and try and gain those trenches. Use the annoying LOS bug against the computer. EDIT: Ive just noticed in the scenario looking at it via the editor you get a company reinforcement after about 60-90 minutes, well, that changes things a bit =P If my game didnt crash I probably would have gotten them at some point. 24. QRF just means first on the scene, doesn't mean suicidal. Besides, I "roleplayed" a bit and went relatiely fast until there was "radio silence" from the Ambush Site, then my guys were a bit more cautious. Going in there without arty support with a QRF force is a big risk to begin with, I don't think anyone in the U.S. Army would blindly charge in there even with their guys getting shot up.
