  1. Apocal,

Penalty Strike, by Alexander Pyl'cyn. That author was, by then, a Company Commander of a Penal Battalion, composed of ex-officers, in Op Bagration. It's the nitty gritty of tactical combat by a man who feels, deeply, understands combat (was wounded several times; was mortared, shelled, went through mines, assaulted trenches, crossed rivers under fire and more) and can really write.

The title should've been Penal Strike, for that's what the text describes, but somebody screwed up. I consider Penalty Strike to be a phenomenal personal account of what it's like to be in a war, losing friends at every turn, with the weight of command heavy on one's shoulders.

Thx for the tip. Sounds interesting and its available for the KIndle.

  2. Crinius,

If you're reading them for education, please understand these were written long before ULTRA was even thought about for public mention. This tends to affect the why we did stuff, based on what we knew, when we knew it and in what level of detail. May I suggest you read ORDNANCE: Beachfront to Battlefield as part of your delvings? This gets into weapon stuff I believe you'll find of real interest.

Thx John that sounds very interesting.

  3. Thx for the replys. I was asking because theyre dated and I wanted to know if all is still valid whats inside written. I was especialy looking for the ones that cover the Sicily and Italian campaigns as I recently noticed that I dont own books about these theatres. So theyre covering the operational level but Iam also looking for something on the tactical level. Any tips?

  4. ASL Veteran,

$35 is reasonable for the time and effort for the Gustav Line. $23 is not reasonable for a small package to be shipped by the USPS.

Same here. I didnt wanted to sound harsh in my above post. Sorry for that. But as I wrote above I got unlucky and my last order from BF was checked by the custom here in Germany. So it lasted nearly 3 month until I finaly held CW in my hands (it took nearly 4 weeks for the shipping and then an additional 8 weeks!! until I got informed by the custom that my package arrived). But what really made me mad was that I had to pay an additional 20€ for VAT. So I had the astounding shipping of 27$ from BF and around 25$ for VAT. That sums up to around

53$ for a 35$ product. Thats just not acceptable and I decided to go only download in the future.

  5. At the moment, you are not right. Right now everything has to be shipped from the States. ISTR not so long ago BFC mentioned trying to set up another arrangement whereby items can be shipped within Europe again. Best to just stick with the download option for now.

Thx for clearing this. But to be honest even if its send from the US, a small envelope with a small jewelcase cant be 27$. I regular buy things in the US and this just isnt right. Last time I ordered from BF my order was checked by the customservice. So after I got informed by the customservice (after 8 weeks) I had to drive 50 KM, pick it up by myself and I had to pay an additional 20 € (about 25$) and then driving back another 50 KM. I was really feed up. Of course this was not BF`s fault but ordering from BF is really a pain in the A..

  6. 27$ for shipping here to Germany???? This is a belated April Fool joke right?? It would cost me nearly as much as the product to order it? No way Iam gonna buy this. When I order things from Amazon UK Iam normaly charged with about 5$ and if Iam right the things from Battlefront always came from somewhere in Ireland. This is only a small jewelcase which comes in a letterenvelope, at least this is what it was always like. Sorry Battlefront but this is a ripoff.
