  1. I don't know whether it's modeled in-game, but full power rifle cartridges can punch through cover the Russian SMG cartridges can't . In the example on the War Department training film Infantry Weapons Effect, .30 ball from the M1 Garand goes right through a foot diameter oak tree and clear through a bucket of water behind it. Thus, what's cover for the Germans is more like concealment for the Russians firing a potent--but still not comparable in cover penetration to a 7.92mm x 57mm Mauser--7.62mm x 25mm Tokarev cartridge. If that doesn't amount to a tactical advantage, I've no idea what does.

Nor is this mere War Department hype, for I've got direct reports from two of my brothers (one ex-US Air Force, the other ex-Army) indicating that 7.62mm NATO ball went clean through cypress telephone poles during firing demonstrations on the difference between concealment and cover. It was drummed into the trainees that trees of this size were concealment, not cover. In case anyone wasn't paying attention, the M60 was then used to saw down the telephone pole section, which was set into a pipe in the ground.

As a visit to the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine will show, pines constitute ~35% of the tree cover there, followed by oak, ~27%, beech at ~9% and almost everything else being soft wood of multiple types. Therefore, as a general rule, trees in the region won't offer ballistic protection anywhere nearly as good as the oak in the War Department training film.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

I have to agree. During my time in the German Army (I was a Panzergrenadier) I was drilled on the G3 Assault rifle. It fires the 7,62 × 51 mm NATO ammunition. I still remember how our instructors demonstrated how you could shoot through a 30 cm thick piece of oak. Of course in close quarters. They also said to us that we shouldnt feel save behind trees even behind house walls you gotta be cautious.

  2. I just submitted to Repository a new mod, it should be showing up for downloading sooner or later:

MikeyD's 'Lily Pond' pattern Deep Marsh terrain tile.

Five or six different Deep Marsh terrains had been tried out before BFC settled on the current 'algae green mud' style deep marsh terrain tile. One runner-up (and my personal favorite) was a more distinctive 'lily pond' tile pattern. The advantage (in my mind at least) is it makes those deep marsh 'no-go' areas more immediately recognizable. Nobody's going to try to drive a tank across that! :o

It was submitted about 2am so it'll take awhile before it get approved for downloading.

    Hope you like!

Hope you like it? I LOVE it. Great work.

  3. I guess your are speaking of the Verwundeten-Abzeichen or Wound badge. It was awarded in black for 1 or 2 wounds, in silver for 3-4 wounds and gold for 5+ wounds. If the soldier got a severe wound (lost of a limb or eye-sight etc.) he got the silver version. If he became disabled, he got the gold version.

Regarding the Infanterie Sturmabzeichen and the Panzerkampfabzeichen it was a bit complicated:

    Infanterie Sturmabzeichen:

    1. In Silver for Infantry and Mountain Infantry. For three combats (assaults, counterattacks, armed reconaissance, etc.) on three different days.

    2. In Bronze for Motorized Infantry. Same as silver version: three combats on three different days.

There was no version of the Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in gold, nor the 25/50/75/100 Assaults ones.

    Panzerkampfabzeichen

    1. In silver for Panzer crews (Panzer commanders, drivers, gunners/loaders and radio-operators). For three armored assaults on three different days

    2. In bronze for Panzergrenadiers (riding half tracks), medics riding a half track and armored car crews. Same as silver version: three assaults on three days.

There was also the Panzer Assault badge fo 25, 50, 75 and 100 (but not for infantry).

    For Panzercrews:

25 /50 Assaults: Larger size than silver version. The Panzer was done in black while the wreath and eagle was done in silver. Awarded for 25 or 50 assaults. The number "25" or "50" was placed at the bottom.

75/100 Assaults: Larger size than silver version. Siver Panzer with wreath and eagle finished in gilt with number "75" or "100" at the bottom.

For Panzergrenadier, armored car crews etc.:

25/50 Assaults: Same as the badge done for Panzer crews but finished in bronze

75/100 Assaults: Same as the 75/100 Assault Panzer badge, but the Panzer was finished in bronze while the wreath and eagle was finished in gilt.

Just one badge was worn, always the higher grade one.

No its definitely a Infanterie Sturmabzeichen

    http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen

Its the version with the Eagle and swastika.

Maybe my Grandpa got something wrong but he always told me he got it for 6 Infantry assaults.

  4. Some comments:

    1. Mixing Assault Infantry Badge (Infanterie Sturmabzeichen) and Panzer Assault Badge (Panzerkampfabzeichen) doesn’t seem right. The Panzer badge was awarded to Tank commanders, drivers, gunners and radio-operators who participated in three different armored assaults. From 1 June 1940 members of Panzergrenadier regiments got the Panzer badge in bronze while motorized infantry got the Infantry Assault badge in bronze.

Thought at first the Genenral Assault badge (Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen) was awarded for single-handed destruction of an enemy tank, from 9 March 1942 the special badge for single-handed destruction of a tank (Sonderabzeichen für das Niederkämpfen von Panzerkampfwagen durch Einzelkämpfer) was created and replaced the General Assault badge.

As a side note, the Allegemeines Sturmabzeichen was awarded if the soldier couldn’t qualify for the Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen, that is, if it was not an infantryman or Gebirsjäger.

As a rule you did not see two different assault badges worn at the same time. And wearing both the Infantry and Panzer badges was even rarer.

    2. Don’t put any decoration on the pocket flap. I can’t remember seeing it on wartime pics. The only one I remember at this moment is the NSDAP Blood Order (Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 9. November 1923). If the Y-straps obscures a decoration, then live with it. It is what I did when I did he German uniforms for CMBN ;)

    3. I haven’t seen any completely blackened WARTIME Y-strap. I can’t rule it our because everything was possible regarding German equipment and uniforms, but if it ever happened then it had been very rare.

    4. The NCO with smock wear Officer’s Litzen.

    I like everything else ;)

I have a Infantry Assault Badge ( Infanterie Sturmabzeichen) in Silver from my Grandpa. He always told that it was awarded for participating in 6 Assault´s. You got the Gold Version for 9 Assaults.

  5. I noticed that when I restart the game then sometimes it works and then when I restart sometimes only W works. And then again after restart it wont work at all. This is all without me doing anything to the configuration of the assigned keys. It just happens on a random basis. Something seems to be completely wrong here.

  6. I'm sort of torn between these two games and wish I could get both of them but I can't. ToW's reported "IL-2 Sturmovik" lineage is attractive, and I like the graphics. I'd choose shiny graphics and a relatively-challenging game over deep gameplay. So I was wondering about pros and cons anyone would care to list.

Two big deciding facts for me are:

    1). Which series is pausable.

2). Which series is most likely to expand into the PTO. I'm a big PTO fan and would much rather do Kokoda Trail than Overlord.

Thanks in advance for any input!

For PTO I would go with John Tillers Squad Battles or his Campaign Series which is currnetly on sale at Matrix.

  7. Unfortunately not. I only have one of his books--Island of Fire--and given that there are LOTS of pictures and maps I don't think it would be a great reading experience on the Kindle.

Iam having no problems with the kindle. I also have the Kindle Fíre HD so I load books on both of my Kindles. While reading on the Paperwhite I watch the picures and maps on the Fire HD. Now I prefer tihs method over books as I can zoom in and out of maps and I never have the issue with maps being to small to find specific places.
