  1. I’ve been playing CMBB for several months now & have decided I’d like to buy CMBO but I have a few queries.

I’ve heard the infantry in CMBO are all uber-infantry & are practically immune to MG’s.

If you were to play with only conscript or green infantry would that successfully make the infantry more realistic?

I’ve also heard the battlefields are smaller; how small?

  2. I agree heavy stuff is the way to go, I'm currently playing a QB campaign as a Soviet tank commander & my pre-planned heavy barrages usually knock out an enemy tank or two!

However would mortar fire help panic the crew of a tank? Could mortar fire alone panic a conscript heavy tank?

I've decided I'll fight a CMBB recon battle in thick fog between armored cars & halftracks. It sounds so fun using HMG's against vehicles!

  3. Well it was a WW1 infantry gun not a PAK, the Panzers were PzIIc’s, the artillery a few 75mm salvo’s & the mortars a few 50mm/81mm but yeah I get your point I had a lot of overall firepower.

As it was I think the infantry gun did most of the damage, the PzII’s seemed most useful for delivering the tank riders.

Does anybody know how effective mortar/artillery fire is on a tank such as a KV?

That sounded like a pretty humbling experience Koblar2!

I don’t have CMAK yet but do British HMG’s really find it that easy to penetrate Italian light armour?

In CMBB I’ve developed a healthy respect for the penetrating power of that 12.7mm Soviet naval HMG so I suppose it’s not too surprising.

  4. "Are you sure? I'll have to go back and read up but I don't think their end was quite that honorable...although they definitely deserved it."

Around 12,000 Polish surrendered and the remainder of the civilian population evacuated.

This was all done under Red Cross supervision.

The Ghetto rising of 43 is often confused with the Warsaw rising of 44.

As it happens many Polish Jews fought for the Home army & Home army units liberated several ghettos & concentration camps (one of my scenarios will feature such an action).

Thanks Panther Commander about the info concerning the Sturmtigers. I’ve done a bit of research now & I believe two were sent to Warsaw; these will certainly be in a scenario or two.

Thanks a lot Kholer for the bmp numbers; you don't happen to know the bmp numbers for the Polish flags as well?

I'm hoping to make around a dozen scenarios & release them in a few months.

    This is my general outline...

    (1) The Rising begins: German units, surrounded & outnumbered must flee the district

    (2) The Rising begins: Poor quality Polish units attempt to occupy a bridge, German units defend.

    (3) The Rising begins: Veteran Polish units attack Warehouses

    (4) Liberation: A captured German tank aids a Polish attack on a Concentration camp.

    (5) A grave situation: A terrible pun, Ammo is going to be real low so lots of hand to hand fighting in a spooky graveyard!

    (6) The Vile Cossacks: An Axis Cossack unit attempts to massacre a hospital, Home army units must defend the patients & staff.

    (7) SS Storm: A heavily equipped SS convoy attempts to drive out the Poles

    (8) Attrition: A very large operation lasting several days, an elite Polish unit holds out against repeated assaults & bombardments.

    (9) A Soviet D-day: Massive river assault, artillery, planes, explosive stuff!

    (10) Surrounded: German units defend a Vistula bridge (probably the same one from scenario 2) this time from the Soviets!

    (11) Last gasp: A final futile battle

  5. Hi I've recently become really interested in the Warsaw rising of 1944 & have decided to make a series of scenarios based on this brutal event.

I've decided to use fanatical Partisans with extra morale (provided by +2 morale leaders) to represent the Polish Home army backed up with captured tanks, MG carriers, AT guns & flamethrowers (will all have to be soviet unfortunately).

The German SS troops who proceeded to raze the city & slaughter its citizens (the brutality was so extreme that it disrupted military operations, weakened discipline & led to the execution of an SS officer for ‘excesses’) were equipped with the most advanced weapons available at the time including massively heavy artillery & Tiger II’s.

The Polish lasted for 63 days whilst planning for 6, the Soviets who first disowned them (even calling them criminals) finally attempted to relieve the siege in a series of bloody river assaults & bridgehead battles.

The Polish eventually surrendered but with full military status.

For these scenarios though the use of the flag of the Soviet Union to represent their objectives would be disrespectful, so I thought a small mod would be appropriate.

What bmp number is used to represent this flag & what would be the easiest way to replace that flag with the red & white of Poland?

Also what about replacing the Soviet flag above the victory/morale counters?

  6. The infantry was for the most part either entrenched or stationed in a wooded hilltop beyond & to the left of the KV's starting positions.

Once I knocked out all the tankettes & armored cars with mortars (so easy, so much fun) & dealt with the KV's these troops were isolated & consequently 'liquidated'.

Actually the worst part of the battle occurred when my PzIIc was knocked out by HMG fire, which came as a bit of a shock!

Panzer76 & Joachim you certainly sound like you were underdogs in those battles!

    However what about any particular events;

Did anyone ever take out a Tiger tank with a lend lease Stuart  ?

Or perhaps a single dug in German HMG kept at bay an assault by a dozen armored cars.

Maybe a single Russian tank hunter team armed with 'deadly' Molotov cocktails knocked out three Panzers.

Perhaps one Romanian PAK 37 fought off six T-34's.

I want amazing war stories people!

  7. Once again CM's ignorance of logistics comes into play with shall we say 'leisure supplies'.

Soldiers need not only food, water & ammo.

One of the most important logistical efforts during the battle of Stalingrad was getting the Russians their Vodka ration & this can effect CM tactical situations.

Is that sharphooter drunk (wouldn't be so sharp then)?

Did that Flamethrower unit have a hard night, last night?

Did my T-34 crew fail to get their ration last night meaning they are grumpy (probably resulting in increased command delays).

And of course sexual tension will also effect CM combat situations.

When was the last time my troops were 'entertained'?

    How is this effecting morale?

Are the girls in this village prettier or uglier than usual (this may be an important factor for defending a particular village other than its tactical & environmental considerations)?

Are my troops homoerotic, Waffen SS boys...will this improve local morale?

CM's total inability to deal with logistics leads inevitably to these serious shortcomings.

  8. Where is that fire coming from?

    Who killed them (& when)?

PzIIIH advance & engage that T-60.... uh oh thats not a T-60, thats a T-34!

Where is that fire coming from?

NO you f%%%ing idiots the other way!!!

    Panic!

Now would be a really bad time for an artillery strike (the sound of whistling suddenly begins).

I've checked those tree's twice the fire aint coming from there, so where is it coming from?

These are all things which have occured during my night battle as such I do love them, but boy I do hate them also.

  9. It wouldn't at all have been difficult for a military dictatorship in the middle of a war to mobilize to a war economy but JasonC is correct the Germans were just too overconfident too an almost ludicrous degree.

I do disagree with his idea that if (& I agree its a big if) the Germans had managed to invade Russia & avoid slaughtering large numbers of civilians & prisoners this would not have made a difference.

Read any personal accounts of the war & what shows through is just the incredible scale of suffering the Russians had to go through to win (there is no way that a Western society could have gone through this & survive).

Russians regularly fought to the death, time & time again.

Russian's continuously said they were fighting to avenge lost loved ones (usually a rather large number of loved ones).

The Russians hated the Germans to such an extent I'm amazed there is even a German left alive today.

With out this hatred created by German brutality (one of the most important Partisan activities was the creation of an underground postal system so that 'free' Russians usually knew what was going on in 'occupied Russia') Russian military morale may well have collapsed (aka 41).

  10. During a QB attack against a Russian village & hilltop in September 1941 (as part of a campaign I've begun) my Kampgruffe spotted two KV heavy tanks beyond & above the target village.

I was severely outgunned as I had only 2 PzIIC's, some 75mm FO's, a panzer rifle company & support elements in the shape of HMG's, mortars & a WWI 75mm infantry gun.

Most of my mortars were dispersed in wooded slope & from here I easily knocked out several Tankettes & armored cars.

This was enough to entice one of the KV's into the village to investigate.

However as it was unable to determine where the mortar fire came from it halted 150m from the wood.

I called in 75mm artillery & then begun to open fire with my mortars hoping to disable it.

The KV began to withdraw & it was then that my 1918 infantry gun opened up.

It fired over ten rounds into the steel monstrosity & immobilized it.

I then brought a PzIIc over a hilltop & poured long range fire down onto it.

The infantry gun continued to pound the KV & finally the crew abandoned the stricken tank!

My mortars & infantry gun then provided fire support for a cautious attack on an enemy trench this went beautifully until the second KV decided to make itself known.

The heavy tank started a long-range duel with my 75mm & realizing I was outgunned I fired smoke shells in front it.

Under this cover my infantry gun moved to an alternate position within the woods & the whole of my force hid.

Soon enough this KV advanced through the smoke to a position not far from the wreckage of the first KV.

I once again called artillery fire & mortar fire, rather than withdraw the KV instead charged the woods, spotted & then engaged my infantry gun at 120m.

For nearly two minutes this short-range duel continued with as many as 20 shells hitting the KV. The infantry gun could have been knocked out any time & did lose two crewmembers but finally the KV stopped firing.

I then brought in my two PzIIC's & fired flank & rear shots at the beast.

It merely began to withdraw & so tank riding half squads jumped off the Panzers & began to assault it.

The Russian vehicle shrugged off many grenades & so a bizarre chase began in which my tiny Panzers & their infantry rapidly pursued a seemingly indestructible foe.

Finally the KV succumbed near enemy occupied woods & victory was assured.

    Amazing.

What has been your most uneven combat in which the underdog won?

  11. I'm assuming you mean Panzerfaust teams.

Stay hidden in cover i.e. woods, bulidings & no armoured unit should be able to spot your tank hunters.

Be wary of defending infantry however.

I tend to set cover arcs which are very close (40 metres or so) & usually have great success (if I can keep the enemy infantry off my back with mortars & artillery).

  12. I have always considered that one of CM's greatest weaknesses is its undermodelling of the Soviet Union’s Asiatic troops.

These troops would have had a shorter average height conferring numerous practical advantages.

Shorter men have less body mass so will require less food & water easing the logistical strain in supplying these troops.

Also because less food is required more ammo can be supplied this means that such troops will not only fight for longer but also end up more experienced in the use of their weapons.

Such troops will be able to dig adequate foxholes in a much shorter (excuse the pun) length of time facilitating rapid tactical flexibility.

Short men get all ‘uppity’ about their height & as such are more likely to fight aggressively particularly against troops who are taller than they are.

Shorter men will obviously be hit less often but also if they are hit by large caliber weapons they are more likely to be killed instantly (as a greater proportion of their smaller bodies will be obliterated) this will help ease the strain on their medical units.

Clearly though this is another sympton caused by CM failing to deal seriously with the issue of logistics.

  13. Hi I’ve been playing CM for a few months now & have found it to be addictive to a quite worrying degree & ithink I can safely say that I don’t think I’ll ever play steel panthers again!

I have been browsing through the comments in this forum for a few weeks now & after playing quite a few scenarios from the depot I have been making my own selection.

Several will fall into the ‘fun’ category; many scenarios’s following the actions of Henry Matelsson a soldier of the 22nd panzer who wrote a book called “through hell for Hitler”.

Other will be ‘realistic’ & be more of the ‘long periods of boredom & then a rush of action’ variety; they will try to show the attritional nature of practically any military operation. As such they require very long time limits so players are not under unrealistic time constraints.

I have encountered however a few problems the CM manual says that 120 turn battles are possible however I can only get 60.

I will admit that this is not too much of a problem, as I’ve set up the scenarios as operations instead.

The other problem concerns briefings after I have loaded the three word files when I then go to open my scenario all I get is ‘gobbledegook’.

Do the briefings have to be in a certain format?
