  1. Oje Mr. Manieri Da müssen wir aber noch eine Menge lernen wie? Na ja wird schon werden To put it simple BTS has no need to produce a "special" german version. The reason is simple: The game isn´t sold in germany And games that aren´t sold in germany don´t have to obey german laws Helge ============== Sbelling chequed wyth MICROSOFT SPELLCHECKER - vorgs grate! - The DesertFox - Email: desertfox1891@hotmail.com WWW: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Capsule/2930/
  2. Mikeman, You are right about that Inch thing. Unusual for us guys here in Europe except the brits. For us all the world is measured in mm/cm/m/km. That´s making things a lot easier, or call it force of habit I forgot some websources about Guns and armour: David Honours site: http://www.wargamer.org/GvA/ and Claus Bonnessen: http://www.mobilixnet.dk/~mob75281/index.htm There you will find nearly all information necessary Helge ============== Sbelling chequed wyth MICROSOFT SPELLCHECKER - vorgs grate! - The DesertFox - Email: desertfox1891@hotmail.com WWW: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Capsule/2930/
  3. Definition time The calibre (or bore) of a gun is the internal diameter of the gun barrel. The length of the gun, including the muzzle brake if fitted, is expressed as a multiple of the calibre. So a 40mm/L52 gun has a calibre (or bore) of 40mm and a length of 40mm × 52 = 2.08 metres. Some countries (such as the USA) measure the length of the gun barrel from the mouth of the chamber to the end of the barrel; this measurement is called the bore length. Continental European countries (France, Italy, Germany and the Soviet Union) measured from rear face of the breech ring to the end of the barrel. This means that the calculated gun length is longer using the second method. 4. Scott StuGs are a bit more complicated: Let´s start the timeline: 1941: 1 STUG Kp Chef 3 Platoons with 2 Stugs and one Halftrack each 1942: 1STUG Kp Chef 3 Platoons with 3 Stugs each 1943: either: 2 Stug (7,5cm) KpStaff 3 Platoons with 4 Stug (7,5cm) each or 2 Stug (7,5cm) KpStaff 4 Platoons with 5 Stug (7,5cm) each Feb 1944: Kompanieführungsgruppe (KpStaff) 1 Stug 7,5cm and 1 Stug 10,5cm 3 Platoons with 3 Stug 7,5cm each 1 Platoon with 3 Stug 10,5cm each June 1944: either: 1 Stug KpChef 3 Platoons with 3 Stugs each (7,5 cm) or 2 Stug KpChef (7,5cm) 3 Platoons with 4 Stugs (7,5cm) each You see not that strictly structured as it is with the type 17 or 22 Kp in the tank bataillons. But if you assume 4 Stugs per platoon you will be right for 1944. 5. Scott Typical organisation of a 1944 german tank bataillon (theoretical strenght) as follows: Staff Company: 3 Befehlspanzer (V or IV) plus 5 tanks Recce platoon 4 Companies each 17 tanks (if PzV) or 22 tanks (if PzIV) Company structure: Company staff 2 tanks 4 Platoons with 5 Pz IV or 3 Platoons with 5 Pz V Normal regiment consisted of one Bataillon (II. Abteilung) Pz IV (4 Companies) and one Bataillon (I.Abteilung) Pz V (4 Companies). 8. *Fionn You have the same question I myself had 3 weeks ago. I have an EPOX-VIA-MVP3-G-M board and I replaced my 333Mhz AMD with the 500Mhz Chip. That doesn´t double performance but makes it significantly faster than before for a really good prize ------------------------- My questions thus are: 1. If I don't sell the motherboard what would be the best thing for me to simply upgrade to. I figure it'd be a K6 III 450 but for £100 that doesn't seem like all that much of a boost in performance to me (especially since the 3D Now! coding seems to be a bit of a bust...) ------------------------------------- *I would go for the 500Mhz K6-2 since it is significantly cheaper than the K6-3 without a dramatic performance difference. K6-2 and 3 have approximately the same performance in 3D applications, since they have almost the same floating point unit (a big backdraw for them compared with the INTEL Chips and the ATHLON) -------------------------------------------- Is it possible (or worthwhile) to put an Athlon 500 on there (for about £150) ? I'd guess not since my motherboard would probably be too old-style for it to work to full potential. ---------------------------------- *No it isn´t. The Athlon needs a special board which isn´t compatible with PII/PIII or K6-2/3. ----------------------------- I hear the Celeron is eminently over-clockable with people overclocking 500s to 650 and 700. Since that's the range I'm looking to get into I could see my way to spending £200 to get a Celeron 500 and overclock it so long as it isn't going to frizzle on me within a year to 18 months. (next proposed update... probably just purchasing an entirely new computer) --------------------------------------- *The Celeron will be the best performance/prize ratio, but you have to keep in mind that you need a new board. But anyhow best prize and a performance roughly equivalent to PII of the same speed. And if you are a lucky guy, perhaps you get one which is overclockable. -------------------------------------- So, what's the advice? If I don't sell the cpu and motherboard what should I get ( knowing I want to keep the cost down to no more than 150 pounds (say $200-250 ) since this upgrade isn't intended to last forever. ---------------------------------- *No upgrade last´s forever. Check for the Celeron on a good Slot1 Mainboard with Socket 370 adapter, that gives you the opportunity to replace the chip in a year with a PIII 600. The ASUS P3-BF is a really good board but it´s damn expensive (300DM) If you have to stay with your motherboard take the K6-2-500 (if your motherboard is able to run the chip, check for BIOS etc. Homepage of MB-manufacturer) ---------------------------------- If I DO sell the motherboard and CPU then I'd probably have £250 to spend ( close to 325 dollars) to buy another CPU and motherboard. That could get an Athlon 500 and motherboard or a P3 500 with motherboard I guess. ------------------------------- *If you have the money to spend, I´d prefer the ATHLON for the PIII. Same money but better performance with the Athlon. As you see, not an easy decision Helge ============== Sbelling chequed wyth MICROSOFT SPELLCHECKER - vorgs grate! - The DesertFox - Email: desertfox1891@hotmail.com WWW: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Capsule/2930/ [This message has been edited by DesertFox (edited 12-21-99).]
  9. ------------------------ Well, in fairness, I'm not advocating that it is standard Bundeswehr doctrine and training to have both driver positions filled at the same time. The only thing I am saying with certainty is that the position is there, and that the capability for a second driver to get the vehicle out in a hurry is also present. ------------------------- Trust me it IS DOCTRINE, or do you think they spend lots of money to develop this stuff, produce it and build it in to leave it alone? No it is there and it is used for good reason and the same goes for the 8 wheeled chassis in WW2. Hey they had 6forward and 6backward gears. What do you think they were for? To the 20mm thing. They had to build in something which is effective against enemy APCs and wheeled recce vehicles. The 20mm is able to fire 2 different ammunition types one is "Spreng-Brand" that´s a kind of HE, the other is a kind of subcaliber Tungsten core AP Ammo. It is usual to fit 3 SP and 2 AP sequentally on the Ammo belts. Furthermore, against soft targets, the Luchs has it´s coax MG3, that´s more than enough. To the 20mm thing concerning the Abrams and other MBTs, I think space inside the tank is the main factor. Todays MBTs are so filled up with electronic stuff that you simply have no room to build in something like a 20mm, and it´s not only the space for the gun itself, you need a lot of space for the ammo too. When I remember my times on the gunner seat of the LEO2, my oh my, the only advantage was that you can´t tip over if you fell asleep Helge ============== Sbelling chequed wyth MICROSOFT SPELLCHECKER - vorgs grate! - The DesertFox - Email: desertfox1891@hotmail.com WWW: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Capsule/2930/

  12. Hi If you seek for some kind of published confirmation concerning the FACT that all 6 and 8 wheeled german recce vehicled had backwards driver (that´s what the 4th men was exclusively for and still is if I think of the german Luchs), the ability to drive on tracks was absolutely secondary, a nice feature. So look into the books mentioned below. BTW: They had the backwards driver to be out of fire as quick as possible whenever needed, since german recce doctrin says that it is the purpose of recce to see as much as possible without being seen, not to fight. Their weapons where merely intended for appropriate self defense reasons. 19. Fionn, If we trust Spielberger, it is. The Nebelwurfbecher were 90mm and If I have a look on Photos the S-Mine-Becher were aprox. the same, could be 92mm. The inner diameter of the Nahverteidigungswaffe is for sure more than 26mm and must be at least 90mm, since it was able to fire the same Nebelwurfkorper 39 that can be fired with the "old" turett mounted Nebelwurfbecher. So you see it´s a little bit complicated and that´s why I am looking forward what the Panzermuseum can tell us. Helge

  21. Hi friends, Expect some news concerning this matter next week or so. I asked them if they know more than that what can be read in some 10 books <G> Here´s what they answered: --------------- From: webmaster@panzermuseum.com Date: 19 Nov 1999 Time: 15:54:04 Comments I don't know how much this will help, but I have a copy of D656/42, "Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausführung B, Turm Nr. 1-50 und Panzerbefehlswagen: Gerätbeschreibung und Bedienungsanweisung zum Turm" that contains a section describing the different projectiles and use of the Nahverteidigungswaffe; it also includes a cutaway diagram of the weapon. If you would like, I would be happy to make this information available on the Panzermuseum Munster site (but it will take me a few days to type it all in and scan the diagram). Cheers, Mike ------------- regards Helge ============== Sbelling chequed wyth MICROSOFT SPELLCHECKER - vorgs grate!
  22. Scarhead, Don´t confuse the NEUTRAL "gear" of the tank with neutral gear of a car. Neutral in this context means that the "Seitenvorgelege" on the left and right side can be operated independently and can turn in opposite directions, which is necessary for "Wenden auf der Hochachse oder Stelle". If one gear (forward or backward) is chosen both "Seitenvorgelege" opperate in the same direction and only differ in the turning speed to keep it simple. It´s a question of the steering gearbox if turning in place in the sense of "Wenden auf der Stelle" is possible or if it isn´t. Furthermore in the Tiger the driver had to do the following after the tank came to a halt: "Kupplung treten, dann rechts oder links anziehen, dann den Knopf am Wechselgetriebe betätigen" (roughly: Coupling, steer right or left, push the button of the "Alternation gearing ?") don´t know the technical term here, but this type of gearing allows the 2 drive sprockets of the tank to turn in opposite directions, which is without this "alternation gearing" impossible. hope this brings some futher light on this topic <G> ============== Sbelling chequed wyth MICROSOFT SPELLCHECKER - vorgs grate!
  23. Well concerning the german Pz I-IV I must admit, that I can´t be of help here, since I personally don´t have the relevant sources. But perhaps someone on this Forum does have a copy of the Spielberger books about Pz I-II, III, IV ? And concerning the Sherman perhaps Hunnicut does tell something about this issue? But with or without neutral steering, with braking one track and moving the other, more or less every tank can turn in place. One more thing you might like to know is that today it works nearly exactly the same way. If a LeoII wants to do "Wenden auf der Hochachse" the driver has to switch gears to neutral and then he can turn in place, but this only works if the tank has come to a halt, not if it is still moving. The moving tank, lets say slow moving with 2km/h, is restricted to the smallest turn radius which is dependent on the chosen gear and the velocity of the tank. ============== Sbelling chequed wyth MICROSOFT SPELLCHECKER - vorgs grate!
  24. Hi Friends This might be interesting for you: Spielberger says in edition 6/1998 of his Tiger book about the turning abilities: TigerI Neutral = 0m smallest radius (gear 1) = 3,44m biggest radius (gear 8) = 165m TigerII Neutral = 0m smallest radius (gear 1) = 2,08m biggest radius (gear 8) = 114m Furthermore he says in his Pantherbook 1999 about the Panther: Neutral = 0 smallest radius (gear 1) = 5m biggest radius (gear 7) = 80m References: Spielberger, Doyle " Der Panzer-Kamfwagen Tiger und seine Abarten " Motorbuch Verlag 1998 6. Auflage Spielberger, Doyle " Der Panzer-Kampfwagen Panther und seine Abarten " Motorbuch Verlag 1999 5.
