  1. Have finished the Wittmann scenario now and am definately a Tiger convert. I did eventually destroy Wittmann and his other Tigers but lost loads of everything in the process. Before playing this scn I was of the opinion that Tigers were not the great beast on the battlefield that they had been ( having mostly played as one of the Allies). I know that in this scenario the Tiger crews are especially good and the British stuff is green or less but Tigers really are a fantastic weapon. When faced with a knocking out a Tiger and all you have are Cromwell and Sherman 75s, it really makes you appreciate how good a tank the Tiger was. Anybody else had a scenario in which your opinion of a unit has been radically changed?
  2. Hey At times on this forum there have been complaints about the Tiger's vulnerability on CMBO, but having just played the Wittman scenario I was inspired to write this limeric... There was once a Sherman one day Driven by chap called Gray Along came a Tiger with Wittman inside 'er And blew poor Shermy away  (Yeh I know it doesn't exactally fit but never mind.)
  3. found it: http://members.tripod.com/johnnocmdow/dowarchive.htm
  4. Hey I am fairly sure there is a web site with all that info on called Dogs of War. Look on the CMBO websites part on the Battlefront website. Tom
  5. Soontobe Rugby World Cup winning England! (Bet I've damn jinxed it now)
  6. Cheers for the replies thats all really useful stuff. Don't know if your source extends to the American formations? Do AT formations like Hellcats fight as a troop or in with the Sherms? The other thing I was wondering was with the Americans is it more acturate to have an even mix of marks Shermans (75mm, 76mm, E8 for example) or did a few 75mms fight with a 76, a Jumbo or even a Jackson? Thanks again , look forward to any replies Ta Tom
  7. Does anybody know historically what the composition of tank formations was? What I mean by that is in a tank platoon (or squadron?) were there 3 Sherman Vs and a Firefly or did Fireflies fight together for example, or 4 Churchill VIIs and a Churchill VIII for close support? Just wanted to know to make my force choices more realistic. Ta Tom
  8. Hey I was just wondering does anybody find it useful to have the larger mortars (3", 81mm etc) on the battlefield, when spotters can pretty much do the same job and sit tight (and safe) in a building. I have on several occasions had a 3" mortar on a map found that it isn't really that useful, because of the fact it has to sit out in the open and so soon gets KO. Maybe I'm just using them wrong. Ta Tom
  9. Thanks all I checked it again and the reason it wasn't working was that time of day was dawn/dusk, set it to midday and it works fine. Well I say fine, I'm on turn 10 of 35 and it still hasn't appeared. Nuts. Guess the pilot's stubbed his toe or something. Ah well. Tom
  10. Thanks for replies. But I didn't really mean that, I meant that when I make my own maps( on the scn edtr not QB) when I come to the unit choosing part I don't seem to be able to get fighter-bombers. Still haven't checked it a second time so it still could be I'm being daft. T
  11. Can somebody please tell me if I am just being daft or is it impossible to get air support on your own scns? Tried making the weather clear and all that but doesn't seem to work. Will give it another try but any help would be useful. Ta Tom
  12. Sorry for double post, but actually meant have no real interest in it. Sorry
  13. Isn't WW2 Online pretty much what you are talking about? Don't know have never played it but from what I've read it seems to be. Have real interest in it myself, much prefer CM. Tom
  14. Hey thanks for replies, can always rely on BFC forum to get an answer. I was wondering about rarity factor too, for example the Churchill Croc. I know it is a flamer and a good unit, but it is very expensive. Is this to give an element of realism to the amount a player buys? Inquisitively Tom
  15. Hey guys, just a quick question while browsing forum; wondering if anybody knew why a regular British Sherman III would work out more expensive than a reg Brit Sherman V (133 and 115 pts respctvly)? Any ideas, they don't seem to be that much different. Ta Tom
  16. Although the Western front campaigns had their fair share of politics, I find the ideology and politics, Hitler versus Stalin, on the Eastern front far more interesting. Stalingrad for example, that Hitler put so much effort and focus on taking the city named after his main adversary (the outcome of which arguably turned the tide on the Eastern Front) fascinating. However, having said that from a militaristic point of view I find the Western Front far more interesting than the East. I don't know why, maybe it's something to do with being British. Ta Tom
  17. No sorry, I should have said, they were elites and the British were veterans, that was one of Rob's excuses for giving me less stuff. Thanks Tom
  18. No, not at all, that's very helpful. I did send out recon elements of about a platoon or so in a couple of directions. But either Rob was very subtle with his troop movements or I did not send out enough scouts in the right direction, because on only a couple of occasions did I ever see more than a few squads moving around at a time. I think it is probably the latter as to move that many troops that quickly, they'd have to be near invisible. Thanks again it is helpful and useful for my soon to come (I hope) vengance. Tom
  19. Hey all I'm afraid I've got another couple of quick questions since I had another hotseat game with a mate of mine this morning and got beaten, again. I was playing as the Germans this time on a map my friend had made (he showed me it in the editor before hand so he wouldn't have too much of an advantage). I've tried to get screenshots we took but my friend's (lets use his name, Rob) computer completely broke while trying to play Myth III. Anyway, I'll try to explain the relief etc. as I think it will be important so you can (vaguely) follow what I'm on about. The following is from what I remember, might be the odd tank/field out. Down the centre of the map there is a long road avenued by trees from about the middle to my side of the map. On my right there is a large hill with a moderate covering of trees. Then just left of the centre of the map there is another smaller rise, heavily wooded on the very top. The rest of the map is made up of large fields with the odd house. From seeing the editor I knew Rob was going to get 3 companies of British Infantry with a couple of 25pdrs, some kind of spotter and a dozen tanks (about 6 Cromwells and 2 Fireflies and 4 Churchills ( IIRC earliest ones with 75mm guns, Churchill VII?) and has reinforcements of 2 companies arriving 23 turns in. I had just less than 4 companies of German Waffen SS troops with 3 105mm guns 9 AFVs (4 Mark IVs, 1 Tiger, 2 Marder IIIs, a Lynx and 1 halftrack 251/1, with reinforcements of 3 platoons, coming 19 turns in). I can see I have a smaller force but I reckon the SS are more than a match for the Brits. I quickly send 2 companies to my left with as many as possible being ferried on the Lynx and HT. I figure that if I can get up on to the left of centre hill and set up ambush points by the road and fields, which run down by the side of the hill, I’ll see get good line of sight and hopefully be able to ambush some of his troops and tanks. I set my artillery up on the hill to my right with a bit of cover but good LOS. My tanks I keep back with a company of SS ready to send them to the main point at which the British seem to be attacking. My Marders I send with infantry support into hedgerows on my right in front of the hill. The first question is, is this okay? Are there any pointers you would recommend? For the first 9 turns or so every things goes fine I think I even managed to kill a couple of platoons worth with my artillery. From then on though it all goes downhill. On the left-hand hill my troops are suddenly attacked by a short but very sharp artillery bombardment, and then wasted by 5 or six platoons worth. I managed to knock out 3 of Rob’s Cromwells and a bit of infantry with my ambushes, but then they too are overwhelmed. On my right I loose one of my 105mms and the other two are running low on HE ammo. Across the fields my Marders are protecting come all 4 Churchills and a load of infantry. My Marders keep firing and firing but can’t destroy the Churchills with their damn thick armour. I tried flanking them but that didn’t work either and I lost a Marder to infantry fire. The other was soon taken out too. I manage to 'shrek 1 Churchill but the others soon routed my defending infantry. All this has happened by turn 15 Most of my reserve force had by this time boosted the right-hand hill defence but in a quick tank battle I lost all 4 Mark IVs to an ambush by the Fireflies just after taking out Robs other 3 Cromwells. The fantastic Tiger faired rather better, losing its mobility but taking out lots of infantry and all the remaining Churchills. But with no mobile tanks left and little infantry, Rob’s 2 companies of reinforcements would have swamped me despite my reinforcements having just arrived. Therefore I surrendered. Allied Victory 63 - 37 The second thing I wanted to know is shouldn’t mostly Elite (I think) SS stand up to normal Veteran British Infantry, my Germans just panicked stupidly easily. Bad luck or bad generalship? I think I know why I lost though; I was not patient enough and didn’t wait for him to come to me, I didn’t put enough effort into recon And he made a fairly unbalanced scenario (although a good commander should be able to overcome this) But on a positive note not bad for my 2nd proper battle against a human. Any suggestions/criticisms very welcome. Sorry this has kind of taken the form of a not-very-well written AAR, but thanks for any replies. Expectantly and gratefully Tom
  20. Just another quick question: In the game what types of Shermans are the British Sherman IIs, IIcs, Vs and Vcs. I assume the c is the British Firefly variant? Thanks Regards Tom
  21. Hey I'm have no actual experience of this yet as I still haven't recieved my copy of CMBO, but I think I have read somewhere that on the scn editor if you load the bridge area with mines then get you're engineers to satchel charge it that will blow up the bridge. No idea if this works but probably worth a try. Will be interested in PBEM as soon as I get my copy. Regards Tom
  22. *POSSIBLE SPOILER* I tried the Chance Encounter as you said The Graeme and it worked fairly well, got all but 1 of the sherms and lots of US troops before I lost my StuGs . Then that last sherm just did as usual retreated and wasted me without reply as I didn't have enough men to try to sneak up on its flank with 'shreks/fausts. Thanks again. Thanks to all for the replies, I guess I'll just cut my teeth on fully modded CMBO and then investigate CMBB, as it sounds pretty damn good. Ta Tom
  23. Hey I was wondering if you kind people of the CMBO forum could answer a couple of questions for me, if you have the time. Apart from the graphics being better (as I've seen from screenshots) is CMBB actually a better/more interesting game to play? For example, is it more difficult/challenging? and is how the game is set out much different? I was just wondering if it worth a future investment or should I just wait for CMAK? POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT (ALTHOUGH I'M SURE MOST PEOPLE MUST HAVE PLAYED THIS SCN) My other question is on the demo the scn Brief Encounter, I am finding it impossible to win as the Germans on normal settings. I set up my assault guns with good fields of fire on my side of the hill just waiting for the enemy's tanks to come into my field of fire (is that the right phrase?). I send infantry (with half team scouts ahead) into the woods and some towards the church area. The Americans with 2 or more sherms just storm over the hill or come round the junction or up to the on another hill.... and blast my StuGs barely before they can get a shot off. The rest of the battle then just consists of those darned Americans just blasting my men to hell with HE from a safe distance. I'm fairly sure this scenario is in the full game, so any tips? am I doing something stupidly wrong? Thanks to any answers to either question Tom
  24. I have no problem with picking cherries, but which cherries to pick? National and international cherries? hmm.. Thanks to all Tom
