  1. Here is an option I am toying with. Why not just evacuate as many French units out of France as you can. I have played with this and figure out that I can evauate about 4 French armies and 2 corps plus a French HQ before the Germans take Paris. (WIthin four turns).

France is going to fall anyway. The biggest disadvantage I see is time. Germany in four turns takes France.

The advantage is now as the allied player you have a nice sized strike force to play with during the traditional quiet period. With the UK Navy and three aircraft carriers you have a French strike force with an HQ.

    Options are many

    - Norway

    - Restrike France

    - The Med

    - Port/Spain (which would cause the axis minors not to join)

    - Defend the UK with the French and send the Brit's Navy into the Med.

Two questions for those with much more experience. 1) Why not do this? What is the big disadvantage? 2) If you did it what would you think of doing now with the allies. You have a healthy British Navy with three carriers (bring the brits out of the med) and 4 French armies, two to three French corps with a HQ. What would you do with it?

    Thanks for the feedback.

  2. I think Battlefront is putting most of their efforts into their new Africa Corps product. I think the Combat Mission series is their bread and buter product and SC is the poor sibling. I read the reviews of of both games at various PC magazines and SC only recieved fair reviews while the Combat Mission recieved very high reviews. Also I found the Combat Mission games in the stores where I live while SC was no where to be found. I only found out about SC though the add in WWII magainze.

I really enjoy the game. Some of the flaws even make the game interesting to play. I would hope that Battlefront would get the product out in a better manner - there are many more people like us that would enjoy this game and play the game on the internet. I think this game is a great game to play via PBEM and would catch on with many people.

  3. Blashy, what would have happened in 1942 if Germany started with 10 times the subs is VERY open to debate. What Germany needed was Subs with much better tech than just more subs. (Which they were getting finally and too late in 1945). The allies won a decisive victory over the subs with the new tech they developed and of course ultra which was the greatest weapon of all. But my point is simply that we will never know for sure what would have happened. Also many do not put much stock in what Donitz said after the war.

  4. Terif, thanks for the info on Russia. Great great stuff.

One point or question though. You said that you can use the Siberian tranfer to the Russian advantage and I understand your thinking. However, the Axis player also understands that. so although you dont have to defend between Leningrade and Moscow, the Axis also doesnt even have to hold that front since often the RUssian has nothing there. It think its to the Russian advantage to have a large broad front. This was the case in the real war.

  5. Another thing that frustrates me about SC is the role and power of USA. I've talked about this with Shaka off of the forum and he told me that there was already posts on the forum about this in the past. It was his impression that the game creator has given some of the MPP's of the USA via lendlease to the USSR and UK from the start.

However - I was wondering what would you do with the game editor to increase the USA's power and hopefully even the game out a bit more from its pro-axis tilt.

In one game a friend and I are playing we are testing out the USA with an IT of 5 to start with.

    Any other ideas?

  6. One thing that is really frustrating to me about this game is the Siberian transfer. Since most players (all but the newest players) know the Siberian forces come if you threaten Moscow everyone avoids it. If there is an SC2 this NEEDS to be changed to make the Siberian transfer come between one two four turns after the Axis have taken Kiev or Minsk. This would make the game be more historical but more important for the game give the USSR a much better chance of defending Mother Russia.

With the transfer in play in the current form it seems the battle for Russia becomes a battle for the south. As the Russian I think you need to defend the Dneper river line even if you have to jam it full of corps. And as Axis get over that river and force Russia back to the next river line even in the first drive.

This is a great thread and I would hope the more expereince players would give us their insights.

  7. I understand that when either Axis or Allies attack Spain that the usual Axis allies of Hung, Bul and Rum will not join the Axis.

However, if the Allies attack Port and then the following turn Spain joins the Axis. Does the usual axis allies (Hun,Bul,Rum) still not join the Axis.

You would think it would make then more apt to join the Axis not less apt. But I think its the same as if the allies attacked Spain.

BTW - if you are in that situation as the Axis I think this is the percentage that Russian War readiness will increase if the Germans have to attack

  8. Well, it doesnt look like their is enough interest for 16 players/teams. If there is enough interst we can form a league and schedule for 8 players. If I play we have 5 already and would only need 3 more players. With 8 players we all can be in the same conference and the top four player/teams make the play-offs. (1vs4, 2vs3, then winners in final).

If you want in let me know.

  9. I have come to enjoy this game. I am also a big fan of the NFL. In my efforts to give back a little to the game and to the SC community here I would like to set up and run a PBEM/IP SC-NFL type league to run along side the NFL season here in North America. (September to January). Since I have done this sort of thing in the past I also know that I am much better at running a league for fun then playing the game.

I am not sure if there is any interest for this but if there is at least 16 interested and COMMITTED players here is how it would be run. I, Curry, would be the Commissioner of the league.

    NFL-SC LEAGUE

RULE #1 – THIS IS FOR FUN

    · We need at least 16 players to form the league.

    · You will be put into a division consisting of four players (The commissioner will by random lot assign which division you will be put into – Thus as the NFL some divisions may be stronger than others. Thus is life in the NFL).

    · There will be two Conferences of which consist of two Divisions

    EXAMPLE

    Eisenhower conference Rommel conference

    Packer division Bear division

    Lion division Viking Division

    · Each player will play the following amount of games for a total of 16

o Play players in their own division twice (once as axis once as allies)

o Play players in the other division in their conference once (all players in one conference will be axis verses all players in the other conference allies)

o Play players in one other division of the other conference once. (example – Lion division teams will play Bear division teams, Viking division teams will play Packer division teams. This is how it is done in the NFL).

o Total of 16 games as in the NFL. Playing 8 games as axis and 8 games as allies. (as in the NFL of 8 home games and 8 away games).

o Commissioner will come up with the schedule

    · Playoffs – The winners of each Division and one wildcard from each conference will make the playoffs.

o The person with the best record gets a bye.

o Tiebreaker – I need an idea here or we will have to toss a coin.

o Team with best record gets to choose axis or allies for playoffs up to the SC Super Bowl.

o Eisenhower conference champion will play the Rommel conference champion in the Super Bowl of SC. As in the Super Bowl there is no home field advantage and the commissioner will flip a coin to see who is axis and who will be allies.

    · The commissioner will tell you or you must receive permission from the commissioner for when you can start your game. The goal would be to have the season at the same time as the NFL season. Since its play by mail you can have more than one game going at the same time. If some players get ahead in the amount of games played the commissioner will not give them permission to start a new game so the others catch up.

    · Dropping out. – If someone drops out of the league we will try to find a replacement for them and keep the won loss record they have had up until that time. (nothing is perfect)

    · The commissioner will make rulings to solve all disputes. He MAY be in consultation with others in the hobby if need be but his word is final. So be nice to him.

    SC HOUSERULES FOR THE LEAGUE

    · We will follow the Z-league house rules

    · Games can be PBEM or IP or a combination of either. However, if a player can only play PBEM then the other player cannot force the game to be IP. Both players have to agree to play IP or it’s considered a PBEM game.

    · If there is a dispute about reloads remember the above ruling that the commissioner solves all disputes. PLEASE NOTE – if you have reloads and not a good reason and your opponent appeals to the commissioner then the commissioner has the authority to: 1) forfeit your match, 2) or give you a penalty in MPP points for a rematch with that player for the game to start over. 3) Or give you a MPP point penalty in an upcoming match. (Like in the NFL if the commissioner forces a key player to sit out a game). So be very careful and don’t reload.

    · If a player seems to be in the discretion of the commissioner to be stalling a game the commissioner has the authority to have that player forfeit the game. Remember this is for fun and not to be taken so serious that you do not have the honor to resign or to play to lose with honor.

    · Allies will be given the following MPP points in starting the game to even things out.

    o UK – 100 points

    o USSR – 1000 points

I understand not everyone agrees on this subject of fairness between allies and axis. Some think we should play straight up, others think the bid should be more. From watching the bids on the Z-league and from the games between Terif and Zapp two of the best players I think this is a fair bid that makes the USSR involvement more important and evens things out a bit for the allies but not overly so. Remember in your own division that you will be playing each side anyway and you will play the same side as the rest of your division when you play the other division teams. So in the end at least for your division and getting into the playoffs it should be even as to which side of allies or axis.

    · No special house-rules are allowed except those rules that are in the Z-league.

I AM Open to suggestions for needed added rules.

Please post them or email me at ForDiplomacy@msn.com.

If you wish to be a part of the SC-NFL-League then let me now. Please include an email address. As I have said we will need 16 committed players to play - if there is the interest I'll run it.

  10. THE MASTER VS THE ROOKIE

I have had this game for about two months. Playing humans now for about a month. To sum it up – I still suck as a player against other humans. Those that have played me know this to be a fully true fact. But I thought it would be fun for the other rookies, like me, to see an AAR of a Rookie or newbie to play a truly good player. No the best player in the game!

Since Terif was willing I had the opportunity to learn from the Master himself. Here is how it went down in an AAR.

    – The Master attacks Den and Poland. The rookie doesn’t have much to do but watch and get some forces ready.

    – The Master attacks War and it falls. The rookie makes his first dumb mistake. Instead of guarding War with units all around I dispersed my units hoping for the lucky roll of the die and that Poland would not surrender. No such luck and Poland surrenders early on turn 2. Denmark holds on with no damage done by the German ships. In the West the LC are attacked by a combination of Armor, air and inf and falls.

    – Poland’s surrender will hurt as the Germans now quickly send more troops west earlier than normal to pressure France. The Germans begin to attack the French line and open up a hole in which they send two corps through to breach the line. In the Atlantic the German subs are found, but their diving power is excellent and they give more damage to the British Navy Ship then they take.

    – In the Atlantic the battle continues and the subs give as well as take sinking a Royal Naval ship. One sub sunk, one down to 1. In France, the Germans seem to have many of their eastern units west already and pound the French line with Armies, Corps, Armor and Air. The French line holds, but as Manstein told Hitler about the Eastern Front in 1944, “it’s a deck of cards ready to fall.” Denmark finally falls, without being reinforced and getting pounded it held until now. One of the few good showings of an allied unit in this the early part of the war.

    – Last German sub sunk in the Atlantic. Italy joins the war and we learn why Terif is the Master. I was trying to withdraw my British navy from the Med and moved them as fast as they could. But the Carrier is so slow (Ever notice why the Brit’s put their slowest carrier in the Med?). It only gets to Malta when Italy joins on turn 5. The Master strikes using a transport as a screen to see my Navy. He hits the Brits, but they are ready to protect the precious Carrier and have the Carrier screened. Both sides take damage. In France the withdraw has already begun as the Germans push almost fully around Paris.

    – Paris is attacked by everything the Germans have. The army that is entrenched almost, almost oh almost holds. NOT its but is kicked and it is destroyed and France falls. How many Free French have escaped is still top secret information. However, the Brit’s are prepared and hold the ports of both Brest and Bordeaux. The Germans try taking Bordeaux without air, just an armor unit and inf unit and take casualties without giving any back as Bordeaux is somewhat entrenched. In the Med all this time the British Navy has been trying to withdraw her naval forces out of the Med with the Italian Navy hot on its heals. To ensure the Carrier is able to withdraw one Brit BB strikes and gives heavy damage to the Italy BB. But then the Italian navy strikes back and sinks her. The Master is not only king of the land but is excellent on the seas. The Royal Navy has taken a beating so far. It seems the Brits hit the Italian ships and get them down but cant sink them while they themselves have taken some serious damage to its fleet. But the Carrier did escape in spite of Italy’s hot pursuit of it.

    - The Mater regroups the German forces and strike at Bordeaux with an impressive demonstration of Armor, Inf and Air all working together in a combined attack. They take damage but the city and port falls. On the Air front the Germans strike at an UK HQ to show that he has enough air to go around.

    – The Germans now attack Brest with air but it is intercepted by allied air with both sides taking loses. In the Med the Italians pursuing the British Fleet pull up to the gates of Gilbrater and bombard it. But hidden behind Gilbrater on the Atlantic side is the UK Carrier that escaped the Med and which now strikes back in revenge at an Italian BB and knocks it down from 7 to 3.

    - The Master Terif gives a lesson on a dual attack of both Norway and Vichy France. With full force on both nations. He knows what he needs to accomplish the mission and both countries fall on the same turn. Impressive indeed! The Brit’s do not have a corps ready for Bergen. I wanted to protect Britain. (I didn’t want the embarrassment of the Master beating me with an invasion of England). The details of the swift Blitzkrieg attacks have been noted and you will have to play the Master to learn those top secret details yourself. (In other words you need to get your butt kicked and earn the right to know :D )

    - As soon as Norway falls, Sweden is attacked. No transports involved but a strong force that has been landed in Norway strikes eastward into Sweden. In France the Brits withdraw a very weakened corps out of Breast.

    – Sweden fights on and gives a good account of herself, without being reinforced she continues to hold and fight on against an impressive force including an air power from Denmark. In the eastern Med transports are seen.

    – Both Egypt and Suez are invaded by the Italians with support by ships. Both hold but at low strength. The Brits send a weak corps back outside of Brest only to be sunk and destroyed by hidden German air. In Sweden, the capitol falls and it surrenders.

    - War Readiness USA 58/USSR 61 its only Mid Aug 1940 and the Mater is totally taking over Europe against the Rookie. This is embassing redface.gif Suez falls, Egypt holds. The rookies tries something foolish and transports the remaining troops in Egypt in a retreating effort (they are very low anyway and would fall next turn)

    - Italy takes Egypt and pursues the retreating UK corp. Italy also bombards Gilbrater again. This time no Carrier protection. UK air recon sees 3 German air in France, coastal cities not occupied. So the UK commander decides to move his 3 air units south as it has just went to Jet-1.

    - The Germans have 4 air not 3 air and attack one British air with all four and destroy it. I believe however since the Brits are at Jet-1 and the German not yet that they also had to take heavy damage. The Italian navy finds the UK remnant transport outside Istanbul. The Turks would not let the Brits inside the city despite their pleas for help.

-Now we go into a time where I lose track of moves as it seems all is quiet, it must be around 4 moves. (Maybe 5) Then when the Italians again attempt to bombard Gibraltar the British Carriers strike back. And with surprising luck the Brit's with three carriers sink what is believed to be a full strength (10) Italy BB. Also during this time both Rum and Hung join the axis.

    - Immediately following the Carrier attack Terif again displays his mastery of the game and attacks Spain. With an impressive attack Spain falls in two turns with a combined attack of Armor, Air, Inf, both of German and Italians and Italian naval power. The Brits seeing a small opportunity strike at Brest during this time with only one Germany air intervening and Breast is significantly decreased. But a very small and really meaningless victory. But when you are a rookie that is about all you get against Terif smile.gif

    - Spain falls and on the same turn Bul joins the axis.

    - The Germans and Italians pound Gibraltar and the Free French unit holding it. The French seem to do well and only take slight damage. There is no carrier intervention. The move ends with the USA preparing for war.

SUMMARY – Terif you are an excellent player and I salute you. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn from you. I learned a lot. His attack on France was near perfect and taught me much. I think my small mistake in Poland of just giving him one or two turns really hurt. I really didn’t put up a good fight in France it seemed to me and it is dearly costing me for the rest of the game. We will continue the game but the outcome is not in doubt because he has so much time to prepare for Russia and so many MPP points now. For me my first Lesson, Lesson one with the Master (Terif 101) is over. When we continue I will get lesson two, (Terif 201) on how to invade Russia...

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed getting my butt kicked. ;)

  11. Just some quick testing gave the following results.

Invading Edi or ScapaFlow had no affect on USA/USSR war readiness.

Once German units approach London or Manchester the USA war readiness increases 10% a turn. However, there is no USSR war readiness increase.

If London falls. Then there is a quick Russian War readiness increase starting at around 10% a turn and increasing quickly. However, perhaps more Germany troops on the USSR would decrese this. (I only had two, some more testing would be needed).

However, if Manchester falls before London there is no quick USSR war readiness increase as if London fell first. The USSR war readiness remains the same until London falls. So I guess better players could plan a stategy of attacking Manchester first and London second. Then when London falls the UK surrenders at the same time that the USSR war readiness begins to increase. Of course the USA would be in the war by then also. Sounds easier than done. Perhaps someone like Terif could pull it off.
