  1. My thoughts exactly Steiner...also if he talks about some bug that's fixed in the next patch he might deter people who are on the fence about buying CMSF.

And those people who are on the fence could be tens of thousands. That's alot of spare change running from BFCs coffers.

  2. Today you get (gaming-wise) a better bang for the buck with duo core. Quad core is the better choice if you do ALOT of multitasking or if you work with advanced programs developing games or making for instance music.

I think quad core is the future, but that future isn't even close to being here yet.

If you are buying now, you should buy duo core.

As for Vista, I run Vista 64 and I like it.

There is a huge drawback in that there is alot of stuff that isn't supported in it yet though. Much of the advanced 3d sound out there doesn't have full support yet which is a total bummer.

    HEY !

That machine was all my idea !

Umm...so are you doing anything special these days or do you care to contribute with some cunning insights about timetravel ?

Hey! There's a dead horse lying here....and it's looking badly flogged too....

    Oh, well...

Come on guys...you always pick the most elaborate, complicated plans.

    Listen to this :

This board is FULL of smart people. Why don't we take some of JasonCs intellect and add a dash of the stuff Kettler is going on about and we build a time machine!!!

    What say you ?

Great. You can get Joe Shaw to drive, Boo Radley to work the rudder pedals, and Sergei to keep the cyclotrometer filled on the maiden voyage. I'll look up "Three Idiots Stranded in 1546" in my Encyclopedia Britannica next week to see if they made it. </font>
  6. To be fair MANY players play mostly vs AI (that includes me) and ,being a somewhat below average armchair general, that's fine with me. I enjoys playing vs AI immensly (especially on the old CM random maps).

As for the moving troops that wont take cover when they come under fire, that sounds very strange. I thought they did this even in the old Combat Mission series.

On the bright side it seems that Madmatt, Dan and crew has done some great work with sounds and graphics (the units especially).

He gave it a 10(!) in the sound department .

  7. I would call it the upper class mental assylum. The true mental assylum is most definitely the Master Goodale threads.

The peng thread is for crasy people with good breeding, or crasy people with delusions of grandieur (you know who you are) smile.gif .

They usually scurry about in slippers and dressing gowns while calling each other "knight" or "squire". If you ever entered the thread you would get the esteemed title of "SSN" :D .

Now just sit tight for a minute while someone comes along and move this thread to the GF tongue.gif .

Since there's no in-game matchmaking, what do most people use to find opponents right away? (other than posting in the forum, because then you have to wait for a reply)

CM is a fairly multilayered, advanced and detailed game, this means that programming a challenging strategic AI is more difficult for CM than it is to program it for your average RTS. With somewhat limited resources compared to other big companies things don't get any easier for BFC, so the strategic AI that you are reffering to will probably not be all that improved from your previous CM versions.

The good news however is that the AI in CMSF will mostly be following one of the plans that the scenario designer developed, this makes the strat AI much less dependant on itself, which is a good thing.

I believe the tactical AI mentioned is another type of AI. This AI doesn't plan so much it rather reacts to things going on around the units. In the old CM this is the AI that tells your unit: "You are under fire, abort your current movement orders and take cover in those trees!"

    or

    "Enemy spotted, open fire!"

This AI is probably more fleshed out in CMSF and probably merges a little with the strat AI now that the action is meant to be played realtime (unless you really love turn-based gaming).

As for finding opponents, I'm guessing the AI will be quite sufficient for me, I do however play vs my friend at times even if he does spend to much time with his wife and kids these days ;) .

  9. Nice post Michael and I appreciate your input, but you better trust me when I tell you that I've probably read at least as many computer games reviews as you have my friend smile.gif .

My gaming interest is probably a bit broader then yours (not that that's a good thing mind you).

I don't play even close to as many games as I used to as I have, through bad experiences, developed enough knowledge to spot a turkey.

Heck, i even worked as a games reviewer for a short period in the earlier days of my life so I have an idea about how things work.

All your points are still fairly true though and like you I only use reviews for an approximate standpoint of how good the game is.

To know the value of the review score you have to know what the writer likes, that's what I'm basing my optimism on.

It seems this fellow liked Combat Mission and so did I so I can tell you right now that even if I wont like it as much as he does, that 8 out of 8 score tells me I'm sure as heck wont dislike it ;) .

As for being an RTS junkie, I'm really not. I clearly like some of the more innovative (yet easily accessible) new games like Company of Heroes, but your average C&C and Starcraft grinder I can definitely do without.

The thing I like most about CM games is that they have a depth that really rewards you for putting in time with them and above all learning things about the real units they simulate. It's just an awesome experience, and as sure as Steve is counting my money now, I really hope they've done it again ;) .

  10. Great to see you post here Andrew , you have a nice site and it's great to see that you appreciate the non main stream games that are combat mission !

These games doesn't get enough publicity in mainstream gaming media IMHO. As consoles more and more becomes the target for the big publishers, great games like combat mission will keep it's faithfull pc gaming fanbase and maybe save the PC as a gaming platform.

Ok...I'm rambling here...anyways, great to see you post on these great forums!
