  1. I understood from you post and test results that a regular unit (str 10 exp 0) after a few turns ends up at approximately the same strenght and experience than a 'elite' unit which starts at low strenght and high exp. So indeed introducing 'elite' units in this fashion would be not the way to go. Therefore maybe giving a modifier to the diceroll and/or movement points with be a better approach. One more thing:wouldn't it be a good idea to give German elite and edge during summertime in Russia and Russian elite during winter?
  2. You're right! If that is the case there's no sense in working that way. Therefore why don't consider alterations in the diceroll (+1 ?) and maybe in the movement values?
  3. If Lucky Zebra is Rice, then who's Bush? And...who's Saddam?
  4. I can understand the size limit that JerseyJohn points out. Also I agree that 'instant' units shouldn't receive extra experience at their entry. That said let's take into account that SC2's map will be quite larger than SC's (hopefully) so there will be room for more units. It just seems to me that along with the bigger map there should be some kind of unit (elite or whatever you wanna call them) that can take advantage of the extra space. Values for attack, defence and movement depend on equipment, experience and way of transport. And on a bigger map there's more room for a variety.
  5. That's certainley something to consider. But would elite units profit from experience (you can't 'buy' that) or would they benefit from better equipment and be more indoctinated?
  6. What are your opinions about including Elite units in SC (if at all possible, prob not since 1.07 seems to be final) or maybe SC2? I don't mean completely new units, but 'upgraded' existing units, with additional techs attached to them. For instance Waffen-ss corps or army,i.e. an army or corps with better attack and defend values. These units wcould become available after tech's been researched. I don't know if this would really add something to the game... I read on older thread where this question was raised by Rouge but no consensus was reached. here Any thoughts?
  7. That would be a nice feature. IMO the 2 axis subs at the beginning of the game sitting near Canada are just sitting ducks now. A loop like you mentioned would give them a chance to return home unharmed.
  8. I see tanx for the reply Oak.
  9. Hey,I just got connected to the net today where I live and I would love to try a multiplayer game. I know where to find player but could someone please explain this bidding system? tanx
  10. Well, the naval combat in HOI is one of the things that needs to be improved IMO.The problem is that carriers are quite useless today. They can only have 1 squadron of aircraft on them, and since one squadron is pretty much ineffective in HOI,carriers are, well there's no point in investing in them.People on the Paradox forums have been complaining about this since day one and still there's no official correction of this issue. But there are several modders who corrected this in their mods. What I like about HOI,is it's scope.HOI is what's Grand Strategy is all about IMO.And with Paradox giving full support and several modders working thightly together to improve the game it's really getting better, especially AI-wise.Patches keep coming out frequently and now some people started the modify the AI files,so there're downloads a plenty to improve the game. What makes SC great isn't playing the AI (which I have to do cos I don't have internetacces all the time,I usely post at work.) but playing over the net or by e-mail,that's quite obvious when I read through this forum.I can't wait to do that (one more month and then I can join your league,at last! ).Hubert made a great game with little resources and I really hope SC2 picks up some HOI to make it even better than it's today. Personally I like turn-based games the best. Some RTS are good, most can't entertain me.A perpetual discussion. Point is that I like Grand Strategy games! And Both SC and HOI get my full support and respect cos games like these give me what I want. It's simple really.
  11. Well with these new ai files in HOI I've seen a succesfull invasion of Nazi-occupied France by the American ai.It landed with 32 divisions and formed a stabile beachhead, supplied it and reinforced it.I had to rush back several divisions from the eastern front to counter them. This I never experienced in SC playing the ai. Anyway I think alot of you would be surprised to see what HOI has become since 1.01. Just my two cents.

    Gas?

jon_j_rambo ,good points. It wouldn't have made sense to invest heavily in chemical warfare when one needed panzers and stuka's to conquer Europe. Also WWII was a war of manoeuvre so gas would have been unreliable and ineffective. But surely the only few who could authorize the use of gas didn't consider the feelings of the German public. They sure didn't consider them when they decided the endlosung at that villa (Wannsee?).

    Gas?

It's weird that Hitler refused to use gas,I mean he didn't mind using gas in the camps. On other matters he would show no mercy and he would tolerate no retreat,in any circumstances. Also many decisions he made on impuls, completely ignoring his general's advice. Then again he was a vegetarian.
  14. Why are there so few games of this kind? There are certainly people willing to play these kind of games. That would be the best!I like HOI,it has some really nice ideas, but turn-based isn't one of them
  15. Hi all, Just wanted to let you all know that Paradox is getting out a new game covering the American Civil War and WWI (1835-1920) based on the EU2 engine. http://www.paradoxplaza.com/victoria.asp I know some people aren't really paradox fans, but I just wanted to let you know so...
  16. Keep a kitten in your Axis and Allies-box?
  17. lol You guys are the die-hard wargaming type, they usually tend to be a bit boring some might say,but here you prove them wrong. euh... Well never mind me.
  18. I thought maybe now is a good time to come up with some events for Hubert so he can easily browse them.Maybe all forum members can contribute by starting event threads (clearly indicating EVENT FOR SC2) so they can be discussed and agreed upon. As a Belgian SC player I was a bit amazed that the Low Countries didn't have a fortified hex:Eben Emael, widely considered one of the strongest fortifications of that time.So maybe there's room for it in SC2 (If the map is made bigger it should not be a problem and could only add to gameplay strategies). On may 10th the Germans started their offensive on France, the Sichelschnitt:a feint in the North to tie up French and British troops and pursue a breakthrough in the Ardennes.Eben Emael and the Albertchannel blocked the way.German solution:glider-troops (Koch Storm Detachement) landed on the fort at 3.30 am and blew the defencive plates in front of the 75mm and 120mm heavy guns.A fight errupted and at midday may 11th the fort surrenderd and the German Panzers crossed the channels after securing the bridges. How to implement this? -good weather conditions on may 10th -researched a tech (? not sure which, any suggestions?) If these are the case:random die roll by the computer:-succesfull:one German corps in fort -failed:nothing changes/one extra LC corps near fort. This is just a suggestion.Better solutions are welcome.
  19. yep,all can be executed
  20. A thread to add all the 'little' things of leisure and eyecandy that Hubert might forget but would not be difficult to implement in SC2.Ofcourse gameplay is priority, but hey,it doesn't hurt to ask -Mp3 playback possibility -Some cool pictures for events -Better sound effects? -Info commanding officers/Hq's -...

    Gas?

In 'The 42 Days' the author (the name escapes me right now) indicates that Guderian had a contact in London who made sure that Guderian received translations of English books on Tankwarfare as soon as they were published,to further expand his ideas on the use of panzers. Glad to see you still VERY active JerseyJohn
  22. Good idea. I can see it work everywhere on the map except in Russia.Just relocate your air-units right behind your frontline (two hexes from the enemy units) and they fight at full strenght. So whoever has the most... However taking in account the weather-ideas from your other thread things might work out.
  23. Recently I learned to play TAO2 (my first divisional/regimental experience) and really got into it (man, all those things to take in account for a newbie like me!!).There was one thing I think that could work in SC2 as well:units being attacked that lose must retreat one hex.Ofcourse this is not TAO and a whole army doesn't retreat just because it had some casualties.Heavy beaten armies on the other hand can be forced to retreat, especially if they are attacked more than once in one turn. What about units whose strenght goes to 5 or under that due to combat losses? It could lead to some interesting situations like breakthroughs in a frontline. I didn't search for this in previous threads so if it was allready discussed... The other thing is manpower. If this is calculated in Mpp's:discussion closed. If not, there should be a limit or a difference.Russia is bigger than Germany and thus could mobilize a lot more young men into the service.I know this is all closely related to the Mpp flow so maybe this will only lead to making it all more difficult.I don't know.Any thoughts?
  24. JerseyJohn, sorry for my poor english.I meant 'Weather should INDEED be adressed in SC2' as your forum title said.Sorry about that. Great ideas here from everyone, especially the bordercolors for the hexes as Minotaur said.(What if one turns the hexgrid off?I'm just being difficult here ) If I understand it right the (much bigger) map would be divided in weather zones, each with their types of weather wich on their turn would have effects on units, movement and supply, right? This would improve the game greatly. One thing is missing IMO though: attrition. The German army suffered great losses in the Russian winter due to lack of food and medical supplies.Thousands of soldiers were underfed and even more wounded died cos they didn't receive the appropriate medical assistance. In SC now,a unit with a strenght of let's say 9 only has this number reduced in combat. The strenght of a unit could also be affected by lack of food and medicines, especially in winter. So a unit that has a low supply (to far from HQ,city, port,is surrounded,...) should see it's strenght reduced even if it's not in combat.Ofcourse this will only happen in the most harsh regions of the map (Russia,Finland,Northern parts of Sweden and Norway) in the worst of conditions. No research to counter this. One condition for all this is the size of the map.I can't see it being a relevant gameplay element on the map we have now.It would have to be much bigger so a unit could get lost in the immensity of Russia and get slaughtered by the weather.
