  1. I appear to have developed a problem with moving around the game map. Now when I move my mouse on the main game screen I am "locked" into that area of the map. The only way I can move around the map now is to use the small box map and move around in the mini theatre map. Anyone know how to fix this? This is rather annoying and just happened when a friend sent me a pbem game that was corrupted. I uninstalled and reinstalled SC with no success. I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks
  2. Hubert- Ok, so essentially HQs will help other HQs and there nations units. However if I have a German HQ, it will not affect Rumanian or Hungarian units? I thought something was wrong with the patch, etc and was sitting there scratching my head. I must have misread patch readme. Thanks for the clarification.
  3. Has anyone noticed any significant upgrades in the 1.04 patch? I havent really noticed much, except that the HQs do NOT supply minors or allies as advertised, despite being closer to them than other units. Also the Russian Black sea cruiser inflicts way too much damage, as does the Soviet Baltic fleet. Additionally, I would like to see the Lenningrad lake freeze in the winter months!
  4. Is the patch compatible with graphics mods or do I need to reload those?
  5. Bill- Thanks for info. I am in pbem game now and dont want to jeopardize it. Are both you using 1.04? I assume difficulties may ensue if one is at 1.04 and the other is at 1.03???
  6. Matt- Is 1.04 compatible with 1.03 games (saved/pbem)? Thanks
  7. I think the issue of limiting research points is the key. However I believe the best way to accomplish this is that once the research is a success, you should not be able to reinvest that research point. For example, you buy one research point and invest it into industrial tech. When level one industrial tech is achieved, that research point is spent and cant be used again. That is the only way to simulate costs effectively, both time and money.
  8. Actually, you might find this comment weird, but William Shirer wrote about this topic in "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." The issue was of course Hitler and his generals in regards to the assault on Moscow and German withdrawals in the face of Russian (Siberian) division onslaught in Dec 1941. The issue is two-fold. The German generals argued that by diverting panzer divisions from Army Group Centre in Oct 1941, it delayed the onslaught on Moscow and allowed the Russians to regroup. By the time the Germans got around to attacking in late November/December, the best they could do was get within about 15 miles of the Kremlin. Of course once the offensive peetered out and the Russians counterattacked, Hitler gave the infamous no retreat/withdrawal order to his commanders. Now, this is where it gets interesting. The German generals later wrote that had Hitler allowed them to withdraw and regroup, the would not have suffered as many devastating losses. However, Shirer has an interesting quote from Blummentritt-- who basically said that Hitler's stand and fight order basically saved the collapse of the German Army in December 1941. Now you might all think this is crazy, but Blummentritt's belief was not based on operational, but tactical thought. In the back of all the German generals minds was Napolean's offensive in 1812 (Incidentally, La Grand Armee and the panzers kicked off there Russian offensive on June 22!!!). The German generals advance for Army Group Center was on the same road that Napolean used. Now when the snow came and the temperature dropped, when gas freezed and the winter clothes hadnt arrived, the ordinary German soldier began to panic. According to Blummentritt, had Hitler allowed the withdrawal on an operational scale, the tactical results would have been disastorous!!! Blummentritt argued that where were the units going to withdraw to? What positions? What supplies? How do you move the guns and the tanks stuck in snow or broken down? The result would have been a rout. After a day or two of withdrawal, the Germans would have done what the La Grand Armee had done---dropped their weapons and given up or walked home. Had that happened in Dec 1941, who knows what the result would have been!!!
  9. Hubert- Presently, you have to spend 250 MPPs for a research point. You can than take that research point and invest in Industrial Tech. I think once you reach level 1 Ind Tech, that research point is "gone." Essentially keep the randomness of when the research advance occurs. However, dont allow for reinvestment of that point. Presently, there is no cost associated with the advance except the time the advance took to be "discovered." If one invests that 250 MPPs and gets the level 1 Ind Tech, then thats it. You should not be able to to get that point back to reinvest. For example, you invest 5 research pts in Industrial Tech. You should get the following sliding scale affect: MPPs Res Pts Tech Level Time 1250 5 0 Random 1000 4 1 Random 750 3 2 Random 500 2 3 Random 250 1 4 Random 0 0 5 Random Obviously since you cannot "reinvest" tech pts, you may have to tweak (i.e. slightly lower to 225 or 200) the costs for such pts. Or you could make research pt cost decrease with each higher level of Ind. Tech!!! However, I think it is necessary that you dont reuse research pts. Once the advance is made you should not be able to recoup the MPPs and reallocate elsewhere. [ September 03, 2002, 02:51 AM: Message edited by: Willard ]
  10. Gunslingr- There are plenty of people who are not liberal in any sense of the co-opted word, but still oppose the burden of a U.S. Empire. Once again, please provide some examples of the "U.S. Empire." Are you talking about a military empire with colonies or bases? Are you referring to NATO? Are you talking about a cultural empire? An economic one? To make a general statement like that doesnt support you opinion. It sounds good, but you havent defined it. UBL attacked the U.S. because he views our military as an occupation force in his holiest land, and views himself as a warrior for god. Your description of UBL is what the liberal press has described him as. Do you subscribe to that belief also? Do you believe this bulls$%t? He is not a holy warrior, but he uses the Koran to shield his actions. He wants his followers to believe the jihad and holy war crap, but even he doesnt subscribe to it. How could he? We supported him and others against the Russians. Was that not a holy war? We supported him and his followers in Bosnia. Was that not a holy war? Who was the enemy? The US is not an occupation force but based in Saudi AT THE INVITATION OF THAT SOVEREIGN GOVERNMENT. The US military is not an occupation force defiling the holy lands--although thats what UBL wants his followers to believe. UBL views the US military as an obstacle for what he really wants--that is the oil in Saudi. With the US there, he knows his "holy warriors" cannot overthrow the Saudis, cause the US would never let it happen. He claims he wants the establishment of an Islamic fundamentalist state in Saudi--but that is for his followers consumption. The Islamic Fundamentalist state is but a tool for him to control the population, the land and hence, the oil!
  11. Of course there are many aspects of US foreign politics that you can point on that helped to make not just UBL-guys but also regular people quite angry. Kuniworth- I would like to see you expand on the above comment. My initial reaction is that you are condoning terrorism. However, I dont believe that is the case. I disagree entirely with a liberal viewpoint that its US policy responsible for terrorism to happen. Terrorists use whatever excuses are available to them (true or untrue) to mask their true goals. Its amazing how this misconception of US policy is translated in liberal politics in the US and European politics. There has been so much revisionist history concerning the recent history of the Middle East and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. The fact is that the modern Middle East is the product of two historical events that the US had NO part of. The first was the Sykes-Picot treaty of 1917 between the English and the French. At that time, both were fighting the Turks in the Palestine/Syria area. If anyone screwed over the Arabs more, it was the English who screwed over their Arab allies. They divided the peninsular into spheres of influence for themselves, which provide the basic outline of Mideast politics today. Palestine was a British protectorate. Syria/Lebanon was carved out for the French. Transjordan was given to the Hashimite tribe as thanks from the British government. Incidently, Hashemite tribal lands are actually located in Mecca and Medina, not Transjordan. However, the Saud family (originally from Oman/Yemen) won the power struggle between the two warring tribes. Iraq/Iran were traditionally British dominated. The second historical event to effect the region was the English pulling out of Palestine after the mandate was up in 1948. This allowed the Jews to arbitrarily set up a Jewish state called Israel, without regard for the rights of the Palestinians. This is not to say that the Palestinians were all right either. The peace deal they were offered in 1948 is exactly the same as the one they agreed to in 1995. SO they fought 40 years and gained nothing. No wonder they broke the peace again. Incidently, did you notice that there was no mention of US involvement in either of those events. The primary country responsible for this was Great Britian. Yet NO ONE blames them for any of this. Why?? Because they are no longer top dog. The Arabs recognize that the US is the preeminent power and expect the US to fix their problems caused by the British. They strike out at the Americans because of frustration, hoping that, like a pouting baby, mom while deliver the warm bottle of milk.
  12. Hi all. It has been interesting to see all your viewpoints about the status of the world over the past 50 years. A couple of viewpoints I would like to add my $.02 to: WTC and we (US) are at war? If you want to understand the rise of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism, you have to look at the big picture-- 1. Islamic terrorism wants to destroy Israel and the Jews--- That is what these terrorist say. But since when should we take everything a terrorist says as anything but the truth? The fact of the matter is in Israel, that it is a war between that haves and have nots. The Israelis have the better land, more money, better economy and better infrastructure. The Palestinians have nothing. However, it is difficult to rally a people to fight with the rally cry of "hey they have more than us, so lets take it!" Because that is no different than an organized riot. But if you told a people "lets kill them cause God says its ok" it is alright. WHY??? Because fundamentally people cant outright commit robbery and murder. But if you give them an out (aka God says you are doing the right thing) then the responsibility is shifted for such acts. 2. UBL and his freedom fighters This is the biggest hoax someone has managed to pull of since Hitler at Munich. UBL is not a freedom fighter. You cannot negotiate with this man because he is just a common murdering thief. How do we know this? What does he want? He wants the US out of the Middle East, specifically the US out of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic holy lands. Why does he want this? Other than Mecca and Medina in Saudi, what else is there for a Muslim? Nothing you might say. But that is wrong. The answer should be obvious and that is the world's largest proven reserve of petroleum. Who controls this? He who controls the land controls the oil. So your answer is the Saudi ruling family, who are universally despised as scum in Saudi Arabia and the regime is barely holding onto power. The only reason they have been able to last this long is because of all those US troops in the Saudi. Why do you think the US has those troops there to begin with? The US troops are there protected that oil for the entire world. If you dont think so, just look at the $10 billion check the Japanese goverment gave the US to underwrite the Persian Gulf war. How is UBL trying to get what he wants? UBL's Islamic fundamentalist Army has been pretty active. Well lets what he has done- 1991- Gulf War (UBL happy cause US put whoopin on Iraq) 1992- UBL unhappy cause US decided that it isnt leavin all that oil. 1993- Khobar Towers in Dharhan (if they wont leave we will force em out) 1994-1997- That thing called the Bosnia-Serbian war going on. Where do you think all the Muhjhadeen got all their training? Since that time they have also been in Chechnya and other former Soviet Republics. 1998- US Embassy bombings in Nariobi and Dar (obviously the UBL didnt get our attention) 2000- USS Cole (US still not awake) 2000- Millenium Plot foiled 2001- WTC 2002- ???? So are we at war? Well UBL and his cronies did issue a fatwa for jihad against the US. Now in secular terms, that has the same meaning for fundamentalists as a DOW by the US Congree has for Americans. As for the boxscore, i think over 3500 dead from the above listed attack and thousands injured should be enough evidence that the US is at war. So, when you make comments regarding US foreign policy and such big academic terms as "coalition building, isolationism, globalization, etc" I ask you one question. How would your country (GB, France, Germany, Norway, Denmark, etc) act if they were the victims of such attacks?
  13. I think Belfast needs a port. That way as Axis, I can ship arms to supply my oppressed brethren in the north and repel the English occupying forces in Northern Ireland! [ August 26, 2002, 11:31 AM: Message edited by: Willard ]
  14. Its best if there isnt any German manual. We dont want them gettin any crazy ideas!!!
  15. Niklas- Sorry I havent been able to play cause I cant get my PBEM error fixed. I think I am getting the same message you were getting. The problem is that it pops up so fast I cant read it. Is there a way to pull it back up to find the problem? Thanks
  16. Thanks guys- I will look into these suggestions tonight. I am about ready to pull my hair out right now. I will post (hopefully) positive results later. Thanks
  17. The file is PBEM file is empty. I cant figure this thing out. Hubert must return... The beach is open!! Artillery closes in on the bunker as I fumble for my pistol...
  18. No luck...something is the matter with the game. I uninstalled everything and tried again with no success. Sort of DOS screen pops up (quick black window with text I cant see cause its up too quickly and I cant stop it). ;laksdjf;lsdkjf;asldkjf;asl I want to SCREAM!!!!
  19. Could someone email me a 1.03 first turn PBEM file so I can test. I cant get PBEM games to load (crashes SC). Posted on tech forum. Thanks!
  20. Both of us are using 1.03. When I put the PBEM file in the PBEM folder, I startup SC and click the LOAD PBEM game button. Instead of going to PBEM file screen, I get a quick pop-up DOS window and then SC shuts down. This does not happen when I try to load saved games.
  21. Hubert and other SC experts- I just started a PBEM game with a friend. I received his turn file and copied it into SC's PBEM file. I started up SC and clicked on LOAD PBEM GAME. A small DOS screen pops up (i think) very quickly and my entire game shuts down. The small DOS screen comes up so fast I can even read any information on it. Bottom line is I cant even load the PBEM file. Any suggestions. I am running 1.03 and havent had any problems whatsoever. Thanks in advance for the help. Willard
  22. If you want to say hi to Tyler's mom, send me the email.
  23. I think what Elijah's point is that you can instantly put an army on the map once you have the MPPs to buy it. I think the argument in this case is that the think of the time it took for you to acquire the MPPs as the time it took to raise and train the unit. I would have preferred in this game, that you purchase units, but that it would take several turns for them to get produced ala CoS.
  24. I like Finland. They make good vodka and have hot chicks that live there. If giving them an HQ will make the vodka free and the Finnish chicks more willing, then Hubert, get to work on the new patch!
