  1. I tend to forgo the tanks - seems that they get knocked out too easily (may be my luck) and then the morale hit is devestating. I keep the shock troops in plenty of supply and then hit their tanks with the AT barrage (which also does some heavy damage to the nearby infantry). I've gone through on both sides and then played a massive 5 trench, all goodies added user-battle that took a while (wave after wave after wave!) but finally pulled out the victory when a lone soldier made it across the lines.

This would be fun to multiplayer :)

  2. It was too on my computer at home - up at work here the brightness is much better.

Also, it's the "padlock" symbol that locks the trench (obviously) not the "X" which simply closes that little control panel for the trench (which doesn't show until you first approach the trench - it looks like a little 'toggle' switch).

As advanced as Flash has become, I wonder why there are no ports of classic board wargames using it? Something like VASSAL but in flash and with an AI? Or is flash really best suited for "side-scrollers"? I tried to learn flash once, could do some simple things (make a ball bounce); how hard is it to learn action-scripting and the more complex aspects of it? Might be worth investigating perhaps?

  3. I don't see how to make my units advance or stay put. Only finished the second round but I built infantry to hold the trench, then bombarded the Huns, when their morale was low built only assault troops to go over the top.

Am I missing some of the controls?

As you build your first units, they'll advance forward towards the first trench and enter it (or towards the enemy and take cover if there are no trenches).

To have them advance, there's a control at the opening of the trench that you can pop open to select the squad to advance (look at their symbols so that you know which squad it is; you may not want to advance your MG squad when you a stormtroop squad ready to go for example).

Note that each trench can only hold 3 squads, so if a trench is full and a squad moves up on it, they will jump in and then immediately jump out and advance.

If you don't want other squads to enter the trench, you can lock it by clicking on the "X" that is in the same pop-up that is at the foot of each trench.

  4. That's excellent! I got in more boardgaming this year than in years past but I'd like to do more. I have 2 young future wargamer's in training now however and so this year saw us play some 'lite' wargames and other non-wargaming games ("1960" for example). I want to get Twilight Struggle as I think they'd enjoy that and I know I would since I enjoy '60. Just a couple of more years and they'll be ready for ASL. ;)

  5. Ok, the "Land-Ships" level was a good bit more difficult, some definite strategy to use there. If you pick a tank of your own to show right away, you take a big morale hit when it finally blows up. If you don't build it right off the bat, you won't get to build it later because the build time is so long. Not bad.

  6. Cool. Now ACORN just needs to figure out how to make the jump from registration fraud - the thing they're actually accused of and which seems to do nothing more than waste their time - to actual mass voter fraud.

Perhaps Obambi should give them another $800k to figure it out?

  7. Hans brings up better the point that I was trying to make. CMx1 scenario designers and supporters paintstakingly re-did all the uploading when the Scenario Depot crashed and when TSDII was launched. They've since added meg's of discussions, tips and playtesting information about many of those scenarios. If yet another new scenario depot is launched here, I don't see the enthusiasm of CMx1 scenario designers to go through all that again (can't blame them) and knowing that BFC has moved past CMx1 games for the most part, I see it as finally closing the chapter on those games. IMHO of course.

  8. PS. GJK, what is your site that you're referring to? Have you submitted it to the Weblinks section already? I'll be happy to offer links to other file, scenario and mod depots from our central repository. Again, we don't want to compete with what's out there but to complement it, and to help the modding and scenario/map making guys out there to spread their stuff.

Yes, I run the two that are listed there, "The Proving Grounds" and "The Scenario Depot II".

I don't want to compete with "official" BFC scenario hosting either - I see no need in having the two, so if yours would be the preferred "vendor", then I'd most likely just go ahead and shut down. Again, we'll see what happens after your launch.

  9. As an "other" community member Combat Mission scenario archive depository owner, I've been providing this "service" for free for 6 years, which includes many other features besides just downloads. Members of my sites have provided TONS of discussions, reviews, tips and articles about various scenarios and game play for the CMx1 series games. While I can certainly understand and appreciate the desire to centralize archives for not only the older CM games, but for all of BFC's line of games, what do I tell my members? Will players that remain faithful to the older CM games want to go through rating and commenting on all those scenarios again? What about the playtesting of scenarios? Will there be no restrictions on who uploads what so you don't know if you're getting a severly crippled scenario or one that is fairly balanced? Where would this leave CMx1 players - will this in effect finally phase out those games? I'm not saying that my and other sites like mine sustain those games, but there's years of data that has been gathered and stored that will be lost should our sites shut down.

  10. Ok, just discovered that you can't review your previous accomplishments though it's checked off as being completed which was a dissapointment. I think that I have a link to my solution somewhere in this thread - I think my solution was to lay a wooden bridge that unrolled over the split as the object piece rolled or was pushed towards the objective.

Ok, just noticed that for the $10 USD via Paypal, get that feature plus you can make your own levels. I think that this has quailified for that $10.00; certainly has been enjoyable and brainwave stimulating enough to qualify that cost - anyone else purchase it yet?
