  1. KAding,

you say it: the possibility to pause also seems a problem to me. The 60 second-phase IS the genious part. You can only watch how your plan works. Was it a good plan, things will go ok - was it badly planned, you can do nothing but bear the consequences of your decisions. The 60 seconds force you to plan, to estimate what the oponent will do, instead to just try things out.

  2. Lt Bull, a great post.

I still don't have played CMSF but exactly my thoughts.

I almost exclusevely played PBEM and when i received a new video-turn, i mostly locked the view to the unit expecting the most action and viewed it from that perspective. I gues i viewed from different persepctives every turn around 3-5 times (depending on the action ofcourse), critical actions more often, i.e. to identify the oponents plan.

And i believe, that the real thrill lies in the way the tactical plan unfolds (or flops and has to be changed). Tank battles were primarily not exciting for me, because of the shooting itself, but if my tanks will win (means if the tactical approach route and formation was correct) and if they will be able to continue on their route to follow my plan.

ParaBellum's experience already sounds very familiar to me, although i have no clue about CMSF.

  3. Could be of interest:

From what we've seen, if you have either a USB mouse or keyboard connected to your PC while playing F.E.A.R., you'll get a major frame rate drop on even the mightiest of gaming PCs. We're talking from 150 frames per second down to 13 fps or so. Using old-school devices appears to fix the issue. We found big performance hits with Logitech and Saitek hardware, although there's a world of USB devices that we haven't tested. We found that the Creative-made mouse and keyboard that come with Velocity Micro PCs don't seem to cause as much trouble, but they still show a measurable decline in performance, by roughly 10 fps.

  4. Rune, here's another possibility to try if everything else fails:

disabling the system's "ACPI" functionality and setup the computer as "Standard PC".

Some time ago this was a standard procedure for audio-workstations. After the switch to "Standard PC" on reboot all system components are rescanned, but that's ok. If ACPI is disabled Windoze is no longer able to shut down the computer. Although Windows is finsihed, the computer keeps running and the screen shows "switch Computer off" and you have to turn it off manually.

Probably not a durable solution, but could help to locate the problem.

  5. Panzerfest,

i know a similiar behaviour from our music-studio, when plugins were sucking too much CPU-power, or a sampler instance used too much memory. Then the host seemed not to react anymore, not even the task manger showed up - but sometimes waiting - even for several minutes - solved the problem and the system came back again.

The next time that happens to you, try to open the Windoze task manager and take a look at the CPU consumption and the memory reserved to several tasks, especially CMSF.

  6. Poor Charles.

As if the game itself would not be complex enough, the problems can be anywhere from multicore support of the OS, the driver, the game, a combination of everything.

I wonder that these problems weren't discovered in the beta phase. The systems that have problems are popular and widespread, not esoteric.

Now i see the devastating review with other eyes. This game is definately in beta state.

But am I getting this right: No customizable controls whatsoever? Not for command keys, not for camera, not for anything?

The controls are customizable with a textfile.

    RTFM!

  8. Yes, there must be total chaos at BFC right now.

    And now that, too:

We regret to inform our North American retail customers that due to circumstances beyond our control, the retail release of Combat Mission: Shock Force will be delayed in USA and Canada.

I will get back to you with a new release date as soon as I have a new confirmed date but my own personal estimate is a delay of 1-2 weeks.

    Kind regards

Surely. Have you never played CM?

The appearance of enemy troops, be it as aquad as in CMx1 or shown as individual like in CMx2, does mean nothing else, that there was an enemy spotted somewhere within the house (level). If he is already identified or if the fight already has begun, is a completely other question (at least so it has been in CMx1).

The oposite is the case. No gun placement in reality without inspecting the ground, especially for defenders.

In reality no need to tell each and every group where to go, when to run, when to shoot and how to enter a building.

Quick decisions and improvisation ARE the real thing.
The chaos comes from the battle itself and the time pressure within the battle but not from the time pressure due to god's view in a RT-game. The excitement of CM is not coming from RTS-action, it comes from the tactical aspect.

Therefore i'm very sceptical about the RT-mode regarding tactical aspects because of it's completely different challenges.
