  1. I too wish I was allowed to preorder an english or US version
  2. Thanks Moon, I guess I saw that one coming. Wished for more, but it's good enough for me.
  3. I'm a programmer. As a programmer I know how much I can do in what timeframe. Because of that I can set a date when I'm ready. Marketing can't do that. I deliver my product at a specific date with a specific set of new features. My customer knows what they're buying 10 months before the release date, which never slips more than one month. Marketing tells the customers why the product is so good, why they should upgrade and why other similar products are so bad. Marketing doesn't tell me what to do, their task is to sell as many copies as possible as expensive as possible. Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm not screaming for a release asap. I want BTS to tell us which year they're aming to release it. Why can't they give us an official statement (including a year)? [ May 24, 2002, 10:24 AM: Message edited by: Cani ]
  4. My apologies to Tanaka and the CM community for the language I used. I've had a lousy day and Tanakas sarcasm hit a rather soft spot. Let's just say that I didn't get my experience from TV. To add (sort of) anything to the topic I'd say Tanaka is on the right track. Just because other games run well it doesn't mean CM is faulty. Tanaka knows this better than me, but there probably is a conflict between CM and another TCP/IP program or your ISP.
  5. My opinion is that each level should have a default increase in bonus, ie a Company HG is always better than a Platoon HQ. Better yet would be to have more than three different steps, then this could be made visible. Second, I think that Platoon HQs should suffer a penalty when the Company HQ is eliminated or when only one or two members of the HQ squad is remaining. I assume there are some heavy changes in C&C in CMBB, as this was rather different for the russians.
  6. I can live with hackers having a party in my PC, but I'll tell you what's not funny. When those pedofiles use your PC to store pictures of 3 men raping a 6 year old boy and the government find out it's no longer fun. They take your PC, you're in the local newspapers (although not with a name but in a small town most people will find out), you're part of a big investigation (risking 3-8 years) and you end up as a witness in court before you get your PC back (with a brand new HD). [Edit]Foul language removed.[/Edit] Oups, sorry, but someone had to say it. [ April 04, 2002, 03:54 PM: Message edited by: Cani ]
  7. I'm fairly new myself, but I'll give it a go. You need to distinguish between spotters (offboard arty) and mortar (onboard arty). Spotters call in arty from the big guns while mortar crews carries their mortar equipment around the map. Onboard mortar requires LOS. (Don't say anything about this, the CM horde will flame you to death.) Offboard arty doesn't require LOS but have a much longer response time, especially if the spotter hasn't LOS and is not in command. All units have a delay to simulate the time it takes for commanders orders to reach the squads. More experienced squads reacts faster, so do squads that are in command. Taking out bungers from 300 meters is about hitting the firing slit, which is fairly small. I don't think you're spotted from 250 meters. It's more likely another closer enemy that has spotted you and told the bunker where you are. What one enemy see all enemies see.
  8. Sorry for jumping in here, is this the thread where I post the improvements I want? Here's some minor onesI want in CMBB or the next sequel. Sorry if this has been mentioned before, I think they are kind of obvious. Railroad/road crossings. Terrain mixes (including water) that are split on the diagonal, so that the map isn't just squares. Streams, with the same combinations as roads to connect them. Streams should be passable by all, tracked vehicles only or infantry only. More house types. Train station, barns, three story buildings etc. There should be no open ground between scattered trees and woods. There should be a possibility for briefing in quick battles as well, to state your requirements (no gamey tactics, max 5 SMG squads bla bla) A commanders log. If you process one turn every second week you need to take notes in order to remember your overall strategy and why you did some unorthodox orders last turn, if you have asked for a cease fire, when the opponent goes on vacation and won't read mail etc. Nice if that could be implemented in the game. Just a plain text file is enough, a bonus if the game keeps track on when when (date/turn) entry was created.
  9. A few persons in this forum have asked what's on the 2nd disc. This is it. I've removed all the bmp files from the CMMOS directory to reduce the size of this post. 10. Ok, thanks, I'll see what I can come up with...
  11. Maybe I've stared too much on the screen in the map editor, but I can't find any railroad crossings (railroad and dirt/paved road). Is there any?
  12. Forgot to mention one thing. The manual indicates that there is a difference between Probe, Attack and Assault. Is there any or is it just flags, points and setup zones that are affected by this? (Probe: you only have to advance a little bit, Assualt: you need to take control of a big part of the map.)
  13. Oups, forgot to search the archives, I assume it's this one(?) http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=019346
  14. Sorry about this newbie question, but I couldn't find anything in the search. So, how does it work? I think I read that each unit is worth something similar to their price, but how is that transferred to the final score (which is usually less than 100)? If I kill 50% of the men in a squad, will I get points for that? Is morale part of the calculation? Terrain (except for the obvious flags)? What else is considered? I'm trying to figure out when to stop my attack.
  15. I also miss that unit info when purchasing. Shouldn't be very hard to implement that, can't figure out why it's not available.
  16. The official date they're giving to the press seems to be June. http://www.cgonline.com/releasedates/rd_06_2002.html
  17. I'm discussing the tactics and outcome of a completed battle with a friend. Is there any way we can share our videos in the different turns without revealing our passwords?
  18. Open up Explorer and browse D: (if that is your CDROM drive). The CD should be labelled Cm_mods. In the root directory open any of the files index.html or CLICK ME FIRST.html with Internet Explorer, Netscape or whichever browser you prefer, there's all the info you need. As stated before, if you can't access the files then you have an issue with your PC.
  19. Agree with Apex. Chamberlains encyclopedia of german tanks is a bible. I'm dissappointed on his allied version, there's quite some difference. However, it's still a good deal if you want one book for US/Brittish and one for German AFVs. [ March 23, 2002, 07:48 PM: Message edited by: Cani ]
  20. I assume there are a few persons who would like their opponents to return their movie turns a bit quicker. Here's my two ideas for how to do that. Manually. Applicable in for example tourneys. Ask a person to be a movie processor. Each turn that there is no input requested from the player the movie processor is included as a CC. He/She then watches the movie, process the turn and sends the result to both players. (This can of course be done by the original player, it's a matter of who reads mail most often.) As I said, only applicable for tourneys and you need to find a person you can trust with a password. Automatically. This would be a great improvement IMHO. All 'movie' turns are sent to a CM server, which process it and returns the result to both players. An option would be to send all turns to this server, which would allow gameplay where you don't know who your opponent is. The automatic part needs support from BTS, so that a movie can be processed automatically. However, I figure this would be a nice feature in CMBB. A standalone executable that only processes movie turns (without displaying them). That way the movie turns can be processed without being viewed. For example, I receive the movie turn while I'm at work, I 'confirm' it with the standalone executable (that doesn't need a CD), and returns it. When I get home I watch the movie and hopefully the next turn has arrived so that I can plot my next turn.
  21. LOL. No, I wasn't hoping that I could enter just before the finals. While on the subject of joining, there are a few threads with Tourneys. Will there be more and are they all handled here at this forum? Will I get suspended if I get a lower average than Dorosh in that other Tourney?
  22. ciks, point taken. I assume changing the ESC key will have a disastrous (sp) effect on some CM addicts. Mattias, of course my suggestions were very subjective, I want to push CM development in my direction There will never be a realistic game, the question is how to do the best possible. My opinion is that the timer needs to go and everything is triggered by events. I would love to setup a few rules for each squad and then the game play should be interrupted only when no rule is applicable or a major event has happened. For example, player intervention should only be allowed if either side is taking a lot of casualties, an objective has been reached etc. Regarding the fact that I know when a squad is eliminated etc is a flaw in the game itself. Platoons were often understrengthed, so I can't understand how my men know when the last man in an enemy platoon is killed??? Regarding both have the cake and it, I prefer to have it as in real life. Why can't I? I'm not flawing the game engine, but I think it can be improved here. I don't want to accept the existing shortcomings of the engine and give gamey orders in future releases.
  23. What is Section III? Where can I read more about the Tourney except for this thread?
  24. Ok, I've had a few games and now I have some comments on things I'd like to see improved in CMBB. Someone made a list of ley commands to improve. Agree with that, especially the ESC key. Talking about key commands, what to you press to go back from the force selection screens? My major problem in game play is the timings. What I miss is event triggered actions. Here's a few examples of what I mean: 1) I want to charge a MG nest over 30 meters open terrain. I order smoke from the mortar teams. Now, I don't want to charge after 40 seconds, I want to charge when there is no LOS to the MG. 2) I want to cross an open field, but my guts tells me there are enemy squads in the woods on the other side. So, I order some MG teams to provide cover while I sneak my scouts over to the other side. Again, I don't want to wait X seconds, I want to start sneaking as soon as the MG teams are setup and ready to fire. 3) I spot two guns next to eachother and orders OB arty on them. As soon as they both are knocked out I want to cancel the arty and save the ammo for later. 4) There's a MG in a building harassing my troops from a heavy building. I have a big gun that don't have no LOS to the MG, so I order it to put some area fire on the building. If the MG team is routed, eliminated or leaves the building I want to stop the area fire because a) I want to use the building myself later on and I don't want to waste the ammo. 5) An enemy squad sits in a building I want. Two tanks have a good LOS and will no doubt take them out the following turn. I have a squad waiting to rush the building. I want to tell them to rush the building as soon as the enemy squad is eliminated or broken. 6) My tank is firing at a squad in a house, with multiple squads. After a few seconds it looses LOS, I then want to put some area fire into the house instead.
  25. Cheating. Player A watches turn 1. Player A makes his move 2. Send all units forward to scout. Player A watches turn 2. Take notes of enemy positions. Player A reloads the file. Player A (again) makes his move 2. Repeat until good results are achieved. Player A watches turn 2. Player A makes his move 3.
